Prepositions A preposition is a word or group of words used
before a noun, pronoun, or noun phrase to
show direction, time, place, location, spatial
relationships, or to introduce an object.

A preposition is typically (not always) followed by a noun or pronoun. This can be a noun
(including proper noun), pronoun, noun group or gerund (verb in noun form):

• noun group (my first job) – I was poor before my first job.

prepositions to, of, in, for, on, with, at, by, from are all in the top 25 words in English.
• prepositions of place — in the cupboard, behind the tree, over my head
• prepositions of time — on Tuesday, in 2020, during the day, at noon

Task 3: Read the passage carefully and choose the correct answers.

Digital learning has become an essential part in students’ daily life. It is undeniable
that it is a necessity for all students during this pandemic. As we move into the 21st century,
books are reducing slowly and schools are moving towards digital learning.

Students are equipped with gadgets like computers, laptops and mobile phones for
learning and socialising. Digital learning is now applicable not just to learn academics but
it also extends to extracurricular activities as well. One of the advantages of digital learning
is it has a number of fun learning tools such as videos, quizzes, games to attract students
to focus on the lesson. Besides, digital learning allows students to attend classes from any
location of their choice. All they need is a gadget to follow the lesson. Additionally, digital
or online classes can be recorded, archived, and shared for future reference. This allows
students to access the learning material at a time of their comfort.

There is no doubt about the advantages of digital learning, however there are also
some downsides of it. For many students, one of the biggest challenges of online learning
is the struggle with focusing on the screen for long periods of time. With online learning,
there is also a greater chance for students to be easily distracted by social media or other
sites. Another key challenge of online classes is internet connectivity. While internet
penetration has grown by leaps and bounds over the past few years, in smaller cities and
towns, a weak connection is a problem.

Apart from that, in an online class, there are minimal physical interactions between
students and teachers. This often results in a sense of isolation for the students. Some
students may have problems understanding the lesson and therefore get left behind in the
particular subject. In fact, many parents are concerned about the health hazards of having
their children spend so many hours staring at a screen. A good solution to this would be to
give the students plenty of breaks from the screen to refresh their mind and their body.

Gapped Text

Now, let’s look at Gapped Text. It’s a reading assessment to check

on your ability to connect ideas in a passage. Six sentences will
be removed from the passage and you need to fill the gaps
choosing 6 out of 8 sentences that best fit the gaps. Let’s practice
with a paragraph first. Remember to always read the rubric for
every task to understand how to answer.

Let’s practice!

Read the paragraph about the importance of sleep. Two sentences have been removed
from the paragraph. Choose from the sentences A to D the one which fits each gap.

Sleep helps to fuel your brain and your body. Teenagers need more sleep because
their bodies and minds are growing quickly. 1 To be at your best, you need
between 8 and 10 hours of sleep daily. 2 They are more likely to struggle in school
and have trouble with memory. This will also affect their concentration in the lesson.

A. They feel lethargic during the lesson.

B. Those with a lack of sleep may be worn out the next day.
C. Many teenagers do not get sufficient sleep.
D. Most teenagers prefer staying up late to play online games.

For Gapped Text, it’s important to read the sentences before and
after each gap to look for clues. Identify key words or linkers
which will help you in your choice of answers. After choosing an
answer, reread the paragraph to check.

For Gap 1, the sentence after is about the hours of sleep needed
by teenagers. So what is your guess? Look at Gap 2, the sentence
after that is about the effect of insufficient sleep. Can you guess
the correct answer?

46
Practice makes perfect. Let’s try the next paragraph.

Task 9: Read the two paragraphs about doing charity jobs. Four sentences have been
removed from the paragraphs. Choose from the sentences A to F the one which fits each
gap.

and the homeless. As students, we can actively collaborate with non-profit organisations
through societies in schools. 1 Projects such as Marathons, Charity dinner, Jumble
Sales and Food Fair are effective for fund-raising projects. The non-profit organisations can
act as partners by supporting the students and provide them with the funding.

2 They can visit an elderly person in his home or deliver shopping groceries
to a disabled person. 3 With the help of the organisation, students can have a food
bank project to help the needy. Being able to help those in need gives students to achieve a
greater sense of personal satisfaction and growth. 4

A. Throwing rubbish and moving the lawn can be a great help for them too.
B. Besides, students can also carry out voluntary activities to help their community.
C. Schools can organise more charity projects.
D. Such a humane practice should be instilled among all youngsters.
E. They can collect fund through activities by their societies.
F. One good way to raise fund is by organising community projects.

Look at Gap 1, the sentence after is showing examples. Can you guess
the answer that fits Gap 1? Gap 2 is at the beginning of a paragraph
and will usually have a linker (Furthermore, Besides, etc). And the
sentence after that starts with ‘They’ which refers to students. Which
is the answer? These are some good tips for Gapped Text exercises.

47

the settings so that only your added friends can view them. You are advised to change your

Task 12: You see the notice outside of the school library.

A Person I Admire

 How has he/she influenced you?

Write an article answering all these questions.

Highlight all the transition words. Identify and label the CAT, PEEL and TRAP.

A Person I Admire
When someone asks who I admire the most in the world, I don't have to look far. For me, the person
I admire the most is my dad. He is an electrical engineer and works very hard for the family. Jamaluddin
bin Jamil is a superhero disguised as a human being.

First, the main reason I really adore him is he is a responsible and respectful man. He puts his family
first. We can always count on him. He never lets us down. I really love how he treats his daughters
and his wife; he cannot see us sad. He will do anything to make us feel better. Next, I love the way he
respects others. He makes others feel good when they are with him. Consequently, his good and
positive attitudes inspire others around him.

Moreover, my dad motivates me to pursue my goals. With his inspiration and perseverance, I'm able
to have the strength to work hard and materialize my dreams. Besides, he always encourages me to
get up and try again no matter how bad the situation is. If I set my mind on something, he isn't going
to be the one to kill my dreams. He believes that if you have put your mind to something you can
always succeed. Thus, I really admire him because of his motivation and encouragement.

In a nutshell, my dad is an admirable person. I can only aspire to emulate his style, his work ethics,
and his refusal to be silenced by people's disapproval. I am who I’m today, because of him.

Task 13: You see the notice on a social media.

Task 13

Handling cyberbullies
By: Atikah Yusra
Cyberbullying is a type of bullying that happens in digital world. It can take place
on social media, messaging platforms, gaming platforms and mobile phones. It is
repeated behavior, aimed at scaring, angering or shaming those who are targeted.
Examples include spreading lies about or posting embarrassing photos of someone on
social media and sending hurtful messages or threats via messaging platforms. But
cyberbullying leaves a digital footprint – a record that can prove useful and provide
evidence to help stop the abuse.
Firstly, students can protect themselves from cyberbullies by not responding to
them. The respond would often make the situation worse and encourage the cyberbullies
to accept them even more. Second, take a screenshot for evidence and then block the
bullies or delete them from friend list. Next, for fake profiles on social media, students
can make a report to the respective social media platforms. In more serious cases, do not
hesitate to report to the police.
Noy only that, parents can also support their children by first monitoring their
children's use of social media and interfering when they recognize warning signs of
cyberbullying. In addition, they can also provide emotional support by listening to their
children's fears and reassuring and advising them to ignore the cyberbullies.
Furthermore, parents need to offer comfort end convince their children that they have
their children’s back. They must also make it clear to their children that they are always
ready to listen.
In conclusion, students need to be taught on how to handle cyberbullies
effectively. This would deter cyberbullies from making more victims and make the
internet a safer place for everyone.

Task 15

Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds, colloquially known as PUBG (pronounced pub-gee), is the

hottest game that I have ever played. Conceptually it is efficient. 100 players go into an
island and battle among themselves. The last one alive wins.

The game is aesthetically bland and prone to technical glitches, but compared to its battle
royale-inspired predecessors, PUBG is refreshingly accessible. Newcomers who don’t play
following the game trends can grasp the beginning, middle and end of their first match.
Players drift onto an island, raid towns or forts for randomized stuff, and stay within the
confines of an electric blue circle that slowly shrinks the map from miles of open terrain to
a single square foot, forcing all survivors into the limited safe space.
The themes of combinations of progression and regression, construction and destruction,
total success and total failure — give players pleasures and excitement. In PUBG, players
never feel safe, because at any moment your hard work can be destroyed by a daring
newbie driving a buggy directly into your hideout.
For would-be viewers, this isn’t like so many other esports that feel impossible to
nonplayers, let alone non gamers. And for would-be players, this isn’t like so many artificial
sense of skill, allowing players to upgrade weapons over time to conjure the illusion of self-
improvement.
I am not the first person to say PUBG is broken, but they can name all its historical
inaccuracies, plot holes and production blunders. Greatness can be, and often is, messy.
However, it depends on one’s style and preferences.

Part 3
Questions 19 – 26

You are going to read an extract of a story. For questions 19 – 26, choose the correct
answers (A, B, C or D) and write them in your answer sheet.

I was only six years old when it happened. I was sitting on the bean bag while my mom was
sitting on the couch behind me trying to style my hair into a bun. Suddenly, my dad walked into the
room staring at the window as if in a trance.

“I don’t think we will be going anywhere,” he declared calmly. “Why not?” my mom
countered. I realised from the look on her face that she was not amused by what my dad had said.
“Look out of the window,” my dad replied. He sounded calm, too calm; something was undoubtedly
wrong. We peeked through the window and saw murky brown water was quickly flooding into our
backyard. I pressed myself against the glass window in a daze and watched the water as it moved
by.

Meanwhile my parents were coming up with things to do and how we were going to get out
of this. I couldn’t seem to take my eyes off the water. I felt a wave of fear gush over me. “Grab all
the things on the floor around the house and move them up to the bed or the couch, anywhere that
is high off the ground,” someone shouted. I didn’t understand why my parents were yelling, but I
forced myself into action. We moved everything off the floor as quickly as possible.

As I was walking through the kitchen, water from outside had found its way into the house
through the vents on the floor. It slowly crept towards me, paralysing me with fear. I panicked and
all I could do was cry. Eventually my mom came and calmed me down. “Listen baby, we are going
to climb onto the roof. We will be safer up there, “she told me. Together we packed food to take
with us onto the roof. My dad had set up a ladder leading to the roof and we all grabbed bags
assorted with food and other necessities to hand to him. My grandma was so scared, she couldn’t
seem to get up the ladder by herself. My dad put her on his shoulders and climbed slowly but surely
onto the roof.

Then he did the same for me. My brother quickly followed, and then my mom. Dad went
inside again and came back with Peanut, my pet dog, and placed it on the roof too. After a few more
trips, my dad finally came onto the roof himself. We all felt a little better knowing that we were
safely away from the water. We had a sunroof in the house right over the living room and we could
see coffee coloured water sloshing against the sides of our couch. We also noticed our neighbours
across the street on their roof and waved at them playfully with smiles on our faces.

We didn’t have to stay on the roof though because soon a fishing boat floated down towards
us. We got off the roof and boarded the boat with the help of our neighbours. Getting my grandma
off the roof was a bit trickier, but with a little effort, we managed. We glided to the end of the
neighbourhood and got off the boat onto the ground near the main road. We took shelter at the
town hall until the water receded.

A few days later, my family and I went back home, sadly we looked at the muddy floor, walls
and furniture. We had no choice but to grab our belongings. When I looked back on this experience
that affected my life so drastically, I realised that it any incident, we must always stay calm so that
we can solve the problem well. It may be scary but if you step outside your comfort zone and take
action when necessary, you definitely won’t regret it.

Every activity in school life plays a vital role in the development of students. Co-
curricular activities are an essential part of school life and help in enhancing the learning
process of students at school. 27 In this way, every student gets to learn beyond
subjects. It covers all aspects of a child’s development may it be mental, social or physical. It

social and organisational skills, developing your interests and talents, and offering you the
chance to switch off and do something you enjoy.

Firstly, they provide a safety valve for students to escape from the pressures of the
examination-orientated curriculum. Learning nowadays has become increasingly competitive
and everyone is afraid of being left out in the paper chase. Students are obsessed with
examinations that they become nervous wrecks. 29 As the saying goes, “All work
and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” Likewise, if a student is only interested in book learning,
he will become bored mentally. 30

Secondly, it revolves around the development of positive and desirable qualities in our
students. Education is not just a process of imparting knowledge or transmitting information,
but it is an all-around process aimed at developing law-abiding, responsible and wholesome
citizens for the future. 31 It is the activities the student participates in that helps him
in progressing mentally, socially, physically and emotionally. In a competitive game between
two teams, a student learns to play his part and to be cooperative with others to win the
game as a team. 32

93
A. There are many reasons why extra-curricular activities are essential.
B. Never post pictures of yourself or your loved ones in public.
C. They are compulsory activities that are important for every student to participate in as
they are designed and balanced with the academic curriculum.
D. Learning in the classroom alone does not provide enough for the development of such
qualities in students.
E. Therefore, he would find difficulties in socialising as he gets emotionally disturbed as
well.
F. Hence, it is through this inter-mixing outside the classroom that such invaluable qualities
like friendship, cooperation and responsibility are inculcated.
G. Extra-curricular activities are thus a form of relaxation to reduce anxieties among
students.
H. Nowadays, everyone is becoming an online shopper as it’s convenient.

Questions 33 – 40

We interviewed six youngsters about their preferred types of books. Read the texts below
and answer the questions that follow. Write it in your answer sheet.

Types of Books
A. Sania, 22 years old
Jane Eyre, written by Charlotte Bronte, is my favourite book. The story revolves around
a girl named Jane Eyre. Orphaned as a child, Jane has felt an outcast her whole young
life. Her courage is tested once again when she arrives at Thornfield Hall, where she has
been hired by the brooding, proud Edward Rochester to care for his ward Adele.

B. Asyraf, 16 years old

I love reading books authored by Roald Dahl and my personal choice would be Boys:
Tales of Childhood. As a boy, all sorts of unusual things happened to Roald Dahl. There
was a time he and for school, friends got their revenge on beastly Mrs Prachett in her
sweet shop. There are stories on holidays in fishing boats, African adventures and the
days of tasting chocolate for Cadbury’s, Roald Dahl vividly shares his memories. Some
are funny. Some are painful. Some are unpleasant. All are true.

C. Rameeta, 19 years old

I love reading The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins. In the ruins of a future North
America, a young girl is picked to leave her impoverished district and travel to the
decadent Capitol for a battle to the death in the savage Hunger Games. But for Katniss
Everdeen, winning the Games only puts her deeper in danger as the strict social order
of Parem begins to unravel.

D. Saw Lee, 20 years old

My favourite book is Pride and Prejudice, written by Jane Auston, Anna Quindlen. Since
its immediate success in 1813, Pride and Prejudice has remained one of the most
popular novels in the English Language. The romantic clash between the opinionated
Elizabeth and her proud beau, Mr Darcy, is a splendid performance of civilised sparring.
Jane Austen’s radiant wit makes this book the best comedy of manners of Regency
England.

E. Danya, 18 years old

The book I love to read the most is The Mortal Instruments, written by Cassandra Clare.
Able to see demons and those who hunt them, Clary Fray is drawn into the world of
shadow hunters when her mother slips into a coma and travels to the City of Glass, the
capital of their secretive country. There, she uncovers important truths about her
family’s past.

95
F. Hamdan, 25 years old
Hiroshima, written by Hersey John is my all-time favourite book. On August 6, 1945,
Hiroshima was destroyed by the first atom bomb ever dropped on a city. This book,
John Hersey’s journalistic masterpiece, tells what happened on that day. Told through
the memories of survivors, this timeless, powerful and compassionate document has
become a classic “that stirs the conscience of humanity”.

ANSWERS - MODULE 4 (SET A) – PAPER 2 (sample essays)

Part 1

To: noraini@yahoo.com
From: malini123@gmail.com
Subject: Tips to stay happy and healthy

Hi Noraini,

How’s life? Still stressed up? You need to relax and take a chill pill. From your email,
looks like you’ve been overworked. That’s not very good, my friend.

Here are some of my precious tips on staying happy and healthy. First, you need to
have good time management and never procrastinate. Divide your time for your school work
and leisure activities. I suggest you spend at least half an hour in the evenings for a good jog.
We can do that together, wouldn’t that be fun?

Second, your diet. I know you have a sweet tooth, so please limit eating ice-creams
and butter cookies. If you feel like munching something, eat fruits. Besides, try buying brown
rice instead of the normal white rice. Brown rice contains less calories and they provide the
same amount of energy too. Also, remember to drink a lot of water and sleep early at night.

I hope these tips are helpful. Let’s plan for a jog time together. Take care!

Part 2

Why do you think teachers give homework to their students? Most people believe
that it is necessary for teachers to give homework because it is to ensure that the students
revise their lessons at home. It also helps them to understand the subjects better.

Firstly, it can encourage the discipline of practice. Homework helps make concepts
clearer, and gives students more opportunities when starting their career. Actually homework
is much more than just completing the assigned tasks. Homework can develop time
management skills, forcing students to plan their time to complete their tasks. By learning to
manage their time, students also practice their problem-solving skills and independent
thinking.

Additionally, homework encourages better study habits and discourages spending

time in front of the TV. Homework can be seen as another extracurricular activity. The most
important thing here is, teachers are able to observe students’ strengths and weaknesses by
checking through their homework. By this way, teachers can help and guide the weak
students so that they can improve.

In conclusion, all teachers should give out a reasonable amount of homework in order
not to burden them. They should remember that students are learning multiple subjects and
this could be tedious if all teachers give abundant of homework at the same time.

Part 3

Question 3:

Should Pocket Money be given regularly?

By Lisa Lee

Children these days are bombarded with advertisements of products that are targeted
exclusively at them. Even those as young as toddlers cannot escape the multitudes of toys
promoted to them, which make consumerism no longer a solely adult activity. Children ask
their parents for money to purchase things they see on television or social media sites. Should
parents give their children regular pocket money so they can spend as they fit?

First of all, children can learn money management if they can a fixed weekly pocket
money. They will learn that they cannot afford to buy everything they see. Thus, they learn
to save up for something they really want. Children can also learn plan ahead. They make
choices of what they spend on and cannot ask for extra money all the time if parents are strict.

On the flip side, getting regular allowance will make the children lazy. Since they do
not have to work to earn it, they may not know how to value money. Children might also have
unhealthy habits if they spend their money on junk food or games. These might develop
health problems in the long run.

All things considered, I think that children should get a regular allowance accompanied
by education on what good money habits should be. Parents need to teach children to weigh
needs versus wants to advise them on the importance of saving some of the allowance given
too.

Question 4:

When I think about war films, it is hard to imagine that they would have deep
storytelling. It will have to be something incredible special for me to remember it. The movie
‘Hacksaw Ridge’ has certainly blown my doubts away and made it to the top of my favourite
movie list.

What makes this movie memorable for me is how it tells a true compelling story during
the World War II. The hero of the movie is based on a man named Desmond who refused to
kill anyone or even carry a firearm. He almost failed his army training because he objected to
obeying the orders of his superiors to perform firearm drills. Overcoming various obstacles,
he ultimately got to perform his duty in the Battle of Okinawa at Hacksaw Ridge.

The movie shows his arduous feat of single-handedly saving more than 75 of his fellow
soldiers’ lives as an army medic; all done without holding even a single weapon throughout.
It is truly one of the bravest human feats performed by a single determined person ever
recorded in history.

There is no denying that some of the war scenes are brutal and bloody – they are not
for the faint of heart. Speaking of the performances, the film features an admirable lead
performance from Andrew Garfield, and excellent effort from the supporting cast that

106
includes Hugo Weaving and Teresa Palmer. If you love war movies, this movie is highly
recommended. Do watch it!

Question 5

The nurses wheeled her away into the intensive care unit. Through a phone call to my
gather, the paramedic told us, my sister went without complaint. It happened so fast that my
family did not get a chance to say words of encouragement when the ambulance came to
take her away.

My sister had been suffering from fever on and off for a week. Then she started having
shortness of breath. One evening, she said she could not breathe and we immediately called
the hospital. Although we had been careful, we suspected that it had to be coronavirus. That
proved to be true when the test result came back. The nurse called and informed us.

As the virus was highly contagious, my sister was placed under quarantine. Her
conditions worsened and they had to intubate her so she could get enough oxygen. Needless
to say everyone, especially my parents, was incredibly anxious. We were afraid of losing her.
Our days blurred into one long wait for her to be better and return home.

After nearly a week of battling, we were so relieved when the doctor informed us of
my sister’s recovery progress. She was placed out of the intensive care unit but still we were
not allowed to see her up close. Days passed and we waited patiently and hopefully for the
good news. Then, one morning, we received a call from the hospital. “Amelia will be
discharged today, you may take her home,” my mom jumped and cheered joyfully. We
hurried to the hospital. Doctors and nurses were lined up along the corridor. Cheers and claps
accompanied those who were discharged after a long battle with coronavirus. First, an old
man in a wheelchair, then a pregnant mother and finally my sister who waved at us with a
triumphant grin on her face.

PART 3
Questions 19 – 26

You are going to read an extract of a story. For questions 19 – 26, choose the correct
answers (A, B, C or D) and write them in your answer sheet
1 Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert are unmarried siblings who live on their
ancestral farm, Green Gables, in the quiet town of Avonlea in Prince Edward Island,
Canada. Matthew is sixty, and since he is getting too old to handle the farm work on
his own, the Cuthberts decide to adopt an orphan boy to help him. This decision
shocks the town gossip, Mrs Rachel Lynde, who does not think Matthew and Marilla
fit to raise a child.
2 Matthew, who is terrified of women, arrives at the train station and finds a
girl orphan instead of a boy; the orphanage sent the eleven-year-old Anne Shirley by
mistake. Anne’s talkativeness and spirit charm Matthew, who shyly tells Marilla that
he wants to keep her. Marilla hesitates at first, but after a trial period, she agrees to
let Anne stay on.
3 Anne is a talkative and happy girl despite living an impoverished life as an
orphan. Though she lacks social graces and education, she has a rich and
sophisticated fantasy life and an optimistic and generous spirit. Because Anne acts
according to her instincts and not according to a code of manners, she unintentionally
defies expectations of proper ladylike behaviour. She attends church for the first time

114
wearing a wreath of wildflowers, for example, and screams at Mrs Rachel for making
fun of her red hair. Anne tries hard to oblige Marilla and follow her rules of social
conduct, but she makes many mistakes, using liniment instead of vanilla in a cake,
letting a mouse drowned in the plum pudding sauce, and delivering a heartfelt but
ridiculous prayer on her first attempt to pray before bed.
4 Anne never had real friends before living at Green Gables, so she was forced
to invent imaginary playmates. In Avonlea, she meets Diana Barry, a neighbour who
quickly becomes her bosom friend. One afternoon Anne invites Diana to tea and
accidentally gives her red currant wine instead of non-alcoholic raspberry cordial.
Diana returns home drunk, and Diana’s mother, thinking Anne has intoxicated Diana
on purpose, forbids the girls to speak. The agonizing period of estrangement lasts
until Anne saves Diana’s sister, who is sick with croup, which causes Mrs Barry to
forgive her.
5 At school, Anne feuds with a handsome, smart boy named Gilbert Blythe.
When they first meet, Gilbert taunts Anne by calling her Carrots and pulling her red
braid. Anne is extremely sensitive about her red hair, and Gilbert’s teasing infuriates
her. She screams at him and smashes a slate over his head. This incident marks the
beginning of a rivalry between Anne and Gilbert, the two smartest pupils, which lasts
until the end of the novel.
6 As Anne grows up, she loses some of her childish flares for the melodramatic
and romantic and turns her spirited attention to academics. A beloved teacher, Miss
Stacy, recognizes Anne’s intelligence and encourages her to join a special group of
students preparing for the entrance exam to Queen’s Academy. Her long-standing
competition with Gilbert Blythe changes to an affectionate and familiar rivalry when,
after four years of mutual silence, they both go to Queen’s Academy. Striving to make
Matthew and Marilla proud, Anne devotes herself to her studies wholeheartedly and
earns the prestigious Avery Scholarship, which grants her enough money to attend a
four-year college the following fall.
7 Thrilled by her prospects, Anne goes home to Green Gables. Matthew, who
has been having heart trouble, dies of a heart attack. When Anne learns that Marilla
is likely to go blind, she decides to stay at Green Gables and teach nearby so that she
can care for Marilla, giving up her aspirations for a four-year degree. Gilbert hears of

115
her decision and gives up his post as the teacher at Avonlea School so that Anne can
teach there and be closer to Marilla. After five years of rivalry, Gilbert and Anne forge
a close friendship. Though her future path has narrowed considerably, Anne remains
eternally optimistic and thinks cheerfully about her future.

First, we will need to prepare an amount of RM35 each for our outing. Then, we will go to
the TGV Cinema. RM15 is for a cinema ticket. Another RM20 is for bowling. Moreover,
we don’t have to worry about our lunch since it’s on Khairul.

That’s all. Write soon.

Lily.

Part 2
Last school holiday, I chose to engage in activities that would help me relax my mind and
recoup not only my health but also my vitality. This coming holiday, there would be no
different. I plan to tour several amazing locations in Sungai Petani, Kedah.
This holiday, I plan to visit two major locations. These include Bujang Valley Archaeological
Museum and Merdeka Beach. First, I would go to Bujang Valley Archaeological Museum is
for educational purposes. It is a part of my assignment to gather information about Indian
influences that have been found dating from the early 5th century. I would bring along my
notebook to jot down some notes and my camera to capture the relics found at the
museum.
After that, I would go to Merdeka Beach. My aunt’s house is only a stone’s throw away
from the beach. I would like to spend time with my aunt and her family. I heard there are a
lot of souvenirs being sold there. I want to buy some for my family. Then, I don’t want to
miss playing kites by the beach. I would bring my camera and a bottle of sun protection
lotion because it is sizzling hot there.

In conclusion, visiting Sungai Petani is a must. It is for my assignment and to visit my aunt. I
hope it will come true. In addition to helping relax the mind, travelling also carries with it
some educational value.

Question 4: A Review

Megah Restaurant: Great mains, pity about the chips

I came for lunch with my sister. We loved our Thai-style mains which were amazing with lots
of flavours, very impressive for a vegetarian restaurant. But the service was below average
and the chips were too terrible to finish.

When we arrived at 1.40, we had to wait 20 minutes while they got our table ready. OK, so
we didn't have a reservation, but the restaurant was only half full. There was no reason to
make us wait at all.

We ordered the chips as a side dish and they looked delicious. But, when we tasted them,
they were overcooked and swimming in oil. So we left most of them. We expected a lot
more for RM10!

When the waiter asked if everything was ok, we said we didn't like the chips and he said
'That's funny, I love them' and that was it. He didn't offer us anything else or take them off
our bill. Also, when we didn't leave a tip, he looked annoyed.

I was excited about visiting Megah Restaurant, and the mains were just fantastic, but the
rest of the experience was disappointing.

Part 3
Question 5: A Story

My Most Embarrassing Moment

Some things are easier to remember, and some are easier to forget. I can remember
my most embarrassing moment as if it happened yesterday. I've tried, over the years, to
forget this moment, but it just never seems to go away. As I've gotten older, I can think back
to that day and just laugh.
I was 12 years old when my family and I moved to a new housing area in Melaka. I
was starting my Year 6 in a new school, with new people and no friends. I was a quiet and
shy person. So, I never hung out with the other children in the neighbourhood. Before
school had started, I had met a few girls who were in the same class as me. After that first
meeting, I never saw them again until the first day of school.
Being the only child, my mom had always combed and styled my hair. She would
usually do my hair the night before, and all I would have to do is tie my ribbon around my
hair. On the first day of school, I asked my mom to do my hair that morning so it would look
nice. She did my hair in my regular hairstyle, 5 ponytails with hair clips on the end. All of the
hair clips matched the colour of the school uniform; blue and white.
I arrived at school and went into my new classroom. Everyone stopped their
conversation to turn and look at me. I looked around the classroom and noticed that all the
females either had their hair in one ponytail. My hair was styled like the Year 2 and 3 pupils
at that school. I was so embarrassed that I wanted to cry! It didn't help much that the
teacher made me sit in front of the classroom where everyone could see me.
From that point on, I never let my mom do my hair anymore. I would always wear
one ponytail to school. Needless to say, I never had any female friends that school year. As
much as I tried, no one wanted to talk to me. I eventually gave up on trying to make friends
and kept to myself. I became lucky when we moved to secondary school the next year.
