MSc Advanced Reconfigurable Systems and Applications

Design and Simulation of the Scrambler in IEEE802.16

Aims and Objectives:

This assignment is to solidify and deepen your understanding of model-based design

methodologies through a practical design and simulation process of a Scrambler circuit which is
widely used in today’s wireless communication systems. The Scrambler in this assignment is based
on IEEE standard 802.16 (WiMax systems), a 4G wireless communication standard. It also
provides an opportunity to test your ability of solving the real FPGA design problem independently.
At the end of the exercise you should be confident in designing other digital systems.

Design and Simulation Brief:

Design and simulate a Scrambler used in IEEE802.16 (WiMax) standard, which is specified by the
following polynomial:

𝐺𝐺 = 𝑥𝑥 15 + 𝑥𝑥 14 + 1

Figure 8-132—PRBS generator of the randomization [1]

Tasks:
1. Build a Simulink model of the Scrambler. Then you need to discuss how to verify the
design and verify the design.

2. Use model-based design methodology, System Generator for DSP, to further

implement the Scrambler in Simulink.

3. Synthesis the design using Xilinx Vivado design tool and discuss the resources used.

Suggestions:

You are recommended to read the detailed information in IEEE802.16-2017 standard [1]. There
are many good textbooks explain the Scrambler. It should be very easy to understand.

Report:

You are required to submit an individual report by the deadline set in the assignment briefing sheet.

Your report must be typed. It should be well organised, and the inserted figures or diagrams must
be clear and readable.

In the report you must clearly show the design process. All design decisions must be fully explained
and justified, particularly, how to verify your functional design, which could be used for final
hardware verification. You should present the simulated results and discuss how you met the
design requirements. Details of marking scheme can be found in the Assignment Briefing Sheet.
