Fragmentation analysis from images

Important steps
 Recognition: Delineation of particles
 Sizing: Assigning physical dimension
Fragmentation analysis from 2D images

Delineation
 2D image analysis gets confused at edges that are not particle borders
 e.g. from contours/shadows or structure (texture)
  wrong particle delineation
  significant user intervention
How does 3D improve?

Delineation
 improves tremendously by including 3D information
 Shape less error-prone on shadows / structures

 Use 2D for refinements and small particles

How does 3D improve?

Sizing
 Different definitions for size possible
 e.g. largest diameter
 consideration of shape,
e.g. by ratios of diameters

 We fit an ellipsoid in 3D and take the

medium axis
 emulates sieving
Procedure

 1. Fly the drone

 2. Generate the 3D model
 3. Run the fragmentation analysis
1. Drone flight

 75-80% overlap
 interactive or
 pre-programmed
flight path
 normal GPS
sufficient
2. Model generation

 No image upload
required
 ca. 200 images/h
on a laptop
3. Fragmentation analysis
Interactive experience
Challenges / Characteristics

 Shadows challenging but manageable

 Extreme shadows: adapt drone flight (see next webinar)
 Only the visible surface assessible
 Analysis of entire muck pile
 Hundreds of thousands of
individual measurements
 Scale inherently included
 No GCPs required
Accuracy

 Model accuracy
 Scale is of prime importance

 Positional accuracy
 Not so important here
