The affreightment, in most cases, involves one or more independent agents acting as intermediaries
between the consignor and the carrier. These include (1) freight forwarders, (2) liner agents, and (3)
chartering broker.
The agents of affreightment are usually specialized in specific markets such as liner shipping, dry bulk or
wet bulk etc. In order to identify how the agents add value, it is important to distinguish between two main
types of shipping: Liner shipping and tramp shipping.
