Water Fireworks

Problem/Question

• How big will the fireworks be?

• How long will the fireworks last?
• What will happen if I mix 2 different colors?
Hypothesis

• I feel that it will take a couple of seconds for the fireworks to form because the food coloring is
going to move around the water. The color of the food coloring might also change once it is
placed inside the glass.
Materials

• Water
• Oil
• Food Coloring
• 2 clear cups
• Fork
Procedure
1. Fill a tall glass with water and fill another glass of any
size with 2 tablespoons of oil.
2. Add 2 drops of food coloring to your oil and stir with
a fork. Stir until the drops dissolve into smaller drops.
3. Pour your oil into the glass of water.
4. Observe your fireworks!
Results
When first pouring the oil into the glass of water, it looked like nothing
was going to happen. The oil bunched up at the top and sat for a few
seconds. After about 5-7 seconds, small drops of the food coloring
started sinking from the top.
Conclusion

My hypothesis was half right. After pouring the oil, the oil sat in a circle at the top of the glass
for about 5 seconds without movement. I also mixed a blue food coloring with a green food
coloring. When I mixed it in the oil, it looked darker than when I put it in the water. However, it
did not change color.
