What I Need to Know

The Renaissance was a period in European history marking the transition

from the Middle Ages to Modernity and covering the 15th and 16th centuries. It
occurred after the Crisis of the Late Middle Ages and was associated with
great social change. In addition to the standard periodization, proponents of
a long Renaissance put its beginning in the 14th century and its end in the 17th
century. The traditional view focuses more on the early modern aspects of the
Renaissance and argues that it was a break from the past, but many historians
today focus more on its medieval aspects and argue that it was an extension of
the Middle Ages.
In this module you will be able to listen to different Renaissance music
and distinguish its characteristics. You will be able to compare the
characteristics of Renaissance music from Medieval music.

The main objectives of this module are the following:

a. describes the musical elements of selected vocal and instrumental
music of Renaissance; MU9MRB-Ib-f-5
b. explains the performance practice (setting, composition, role of
composers/performers, and audience) during Renaissance period
MU9MRB-Ia-h-2
c. relates Renaissance and music to other art forms and its history
within the era; MU9MRB-Ic-f-3

After going through with this module, you are expected to:
a. Listen perceptively to examples of music from the Renaissance period
b. Describe the musical characteristics of the Renaissance period based
on the elements of music
c. name the composers of the Renaissance period
d. recognize the relationship and development of music from the
Medieval to the Renaissance period

Lesson

In our previous lesson about the Medieval period, you have learned the
characteristics of Medieval music, the musical forms and the composer of the
period. In this module you will discover a new type of music. You will be able
to compare the development of music from the medieval period to the
Renaissance period. You will get to know new composers and their
contributions to the music of the Renaissance period.

What’s In
Medieval music is characterized by a monophonic texture. There are two
types of Medieval music namely the Gregorian Chant which is based on Latin
Liturgy and the Troubadour music which is secular. Now, listen to the music
examples below. You will observe that they have the same Title. Compare the
two music by answering the chart.

What is It
The pictures on the left are visual arts (painting, sculpture and
architecture) created during the Medieval period while the pictures on the right
were created during the Renaissance period. What is the Renaissance period?
The Renaissance typically refers to a period in European history
approximately between 1400 and 1600. Many historians assert that it started
earlier or ended later, depending on the country. It bridged the periods of the
Middle Ages and modern history, and, depending on the country, overlaps with
the Early Modern, Elizabethan and Restoration periods. The Renaissance is most
closely associated with Italy, where it began in the 14th century, though countries
such as Germany, England and France went through many of the same cultural
changes and phenomena.
Renaissance music is music written in Europe during the Renaissance
period. As in the other arts, the music of the period was significantly influenced
by the developments which define the early modern period: the rise of
humanistic thought; the recovery of the literary and artistic heritage of ancient
Greece and Rome; increased innovation and discovery; the growth of commercial
enterprise; the rise of a bourgeois class; and the Protestant Reformation. From
this changing society emerged a common, unifying musical language, in
particular the polyphonic style of the Franco-Flemish school.
Most music written during this period is intended to be sung, either as large
choral pieces in church or as songs or madrigals.
The invention of printing in the 1400’s paved the way for a wide
distribution of renaissance compositions. With the emergence of the bourgeois
class, renaissance music became popular as entertainment and activity for
amateurs and the educated. Lute was the prominent instrument of the
renaissance era. The influence of the Roman Catholic Church started to decline
as the new music genre arose. Though sacred music was still of great
importance, secular music became more prominent in the renaissance period.
This era was also known as the ―golden age‖ of a cappella choral music.
Characteristics of Renaissance Music
● Mostly Polyphonic
● Imitation among the voices is common
● Use of word painting in text and music
(word painting is the musical technique of composing music that reflects
the literal meaning of a song's lyrics. For example, ascending scales
would accompany lyrics about going up; slow, dark music would
accompany lyrics about death.)
● Melodic lines move in flowing manner
● Melodies are easier to perform because these move along a scale with a
few large leaps

Vocal Music of the Renaissance Period
Mass – is a form of sacred musical composition that sets texts of the
Eucharistic liturgy into music.
Characteristics of the Mass:
● Polyphonic
● May be sung a cappella or with orchestral accompaniment
● Text may be syllabic (one note set to each syllable), neumatic (a few notes
set to one syllable), or melismatic (many notes to one syllable)
Five Main Sections of Mass:
Kyrie (Lord Have Mercy)
Gloria (Glory to God in the Highest)
Credo (I Believe in One God)
Sanctus and Benedictus (Holy, holy and Blessed Is He)
Agnus Dei (Lamb of God)

Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina

Rome 1525 - February 2, 1594
He is said to be the greatest master of Roman
Catholic Church music during the Renaissance period.
Majority of his compositions are sacred music. He was
committed to sacred music and has a keen interest in
satisfying the desires of church leaders in the sixteenth
century. Palestrina’s Pope Marcellus Mass is held up as
the perfect example of counter - reformation style. Kyrie
is part of the first two sections of the Pope Marcellus Mass.
His career reflects his commitment to the music of
the church. He received his early training and spent the
majority of his career in various churches in Rome,
including the pope’s chapel. He was an organist and
choirmaster at both the Sistine Chapel and at St. Peter's which may have
influenced his distinctively pure and restrained style in musical compositions.
Palestrina also served as an organist in St. Agapito. His first book Masses became
popular and was greatly appreciated by Pope Julius III.
Palestrina has two sons but lost them both during the plague epidemic
that struck Rome in the 1570's. He had planned to become a priest but
eventually changed his mind and married a wealthy widow. This improved his
wealth and enabled him to pursue a musical career for the rest of his life.

Madrigal – A secular vocal polyphonic music composition which originated from

Italy. It was written and expressed in a poetic text and sung during courtly social
gatherings. It is the most important secular religion from during the Renaissance
period.
Characteristics of the Madrigal:
● Polyphonic
● Sung a cappella
● Through–composed
● Frequently in 3 to 6 voices

Thomas Morley
1557-1602

Born in Norwich, east England, was a singer in the local cathedral from
his boyhood, and became a chorister there in1583. Thomas Morley was the most
famous composer of secular music in his time. He was believed to have studied
music with William Byrd, an Elizabethan composer of sacred music. He received
his Bachelor’s degree in Oxford and became an organist at St. Paul’s Cathedral
in London.
He tried imitating Byrd in his early works but veered towards composing
madrigals that show a variety of color, form and technique. Most of his madrigals
are light and easy to sing with some aspects of Italian style. His Musica
Transalpina, a collection of Italian madrigals fitted with English text, was
published in 1588 by Nicholas Yonge. Shortly after, he began publishing his own
collections of madrigals and made significant contributions to the history of
music.

His works include:
