IIOT (Industrial Internet of Things)

Specifying the type of communications for your network:

1. Physical connection (physical layer-connection the instrument uses for communication)
2. Communication protocol (language)

Common Industrial Network

Physical Connection (communication protocol)

Modbus (Modicon – Schneider Electric)

Ethernet (Modbus TCP/IP)
RS232/485 (Modbus RTU)

CIP: Common Industrial Protocol (ODVA – Rockwell Automation)

Ethernet (EtherNet/IP)
Coaxial (Controlnet)
RS485 CANbus (DeviceNet)

HARDWARE USED:

CC-Link (Mitsubishi)
Ethernet (CC-Link IE)
RS485 (CC-Link)

Profibus (Siemens)
Ethernet (ProfiNet)
RS485 (Profibus DP)
(Profibus PA is variant of DP)

CANopen
J1939 is a high-level protocol built on the CAN bus that provides serial data communication between
electronic control units (ECUs) in heavy-duty vehicles.

BACnet (Building automation and control application)

MODBUS: Modicon created modbus and is open protocol

Ethernet
3 Variations of modbus protocol
1. ASCII – not compatible with RTU
2. RTU (Remote Terminal Unit) – most common
3. TCP/IP

RTU Network
Serial Connection: uses 3 types of electrical interface
1. RS232 – point to point connection and under 50 ft
2. RS485- popular, connecting multiple units over 50ft
a. Only 32 nodes on a single segment if more then 32 nodes a REPEATER is required

3. RS485 -

 BAUD RATE (bit per second): 9600 – 19200 typical speed modbus messages are sent
 On 1 network = 1 Master and 247 Slaves max
 RTU network must be connected in a DAISY CHAIN manner

TCP/IP Network
