CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM

Introduction

Over the years, many new technologies are invented and changed the lifestyle of people.

One of these is the Internet, and over time, it was fashionable to social networking sites. The

main goal of this website is to interact with your family and friends as well as with people,

whether they are nearby or far away. The internet has given us the ability to connect with people

from around the globe with a few clicks of a button. And you can easily send information to a

friend or get information. Social Medias such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat

etc., have attracted millions of users, many of whom have integrated these sites into their daily

practices. People consumed a lot of time on this sites uploading or downloading, getting

information concerning their career or academic work. People are always online every second,

chatting with friends, watching online movies, doing research. Social site has become an habit

for some people, they find it difficult to study for one hour without login to one network site.

Some people have become very smart because of the information they get from this sites, why

some have become very poor academically, because it easy to get almost any materials for

school assignment.

According to Kuppuswamy and Shankar (2010), social network websites grab attention

of the students and then diverts it towards non-educational and inappropriate actions including

useless chatting. Whereas on the other hand, (Liccardi, Ounnas, Massey, Kinnunen, Midy,
SOCIAL MEDIA AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE 5

&Sakar. 2007) reviewed that the students are socially connected with each other for sharing their

daily learning experiences and do conversation on several topics. This shows that social

networks are beneficial for the students as it contributes in their learning experiences as well as

in their academic life. Trusov, Bucklin, &Pauwels (2009) noted that the Internet is no doubt

evolution of technology but specifically social networks are extremely unsafe for teenagers,

social networks become hugely common and well-known in past few years. According to Cain

(2009) social network websites provide ease of connecting people to one another; free of cost

and after connecting one can post news, informative material and other things including videos

and pictures etc. Wiley and Sisson (2006) argued that the previous studies have found that more

than 90% of tertiary school students use social networks. In the same way Ellison et al (2007)

stated that the students use social networking websites approximately 30 minutes throughout the

day as a part of their daily routine life. This statement shows the importance of social networking

websites in students’ life. Lenhart and Madden (2007) revealed through a survey that students

strongly recommend social networking websites to stay in touch with friends to keep informed

and aware.

Pew Research Center, 72 % of high school students & 78 % of college students spent

time on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat. And these numbers indicate how much the

student community involved in the virtual world of good networking.

Background of the Study

Have a Facebook account? What about Twitter? Whether you’ve already dipped your

toes in the waters of social media or are still standing on the shore wondering what to make of it

all, learning how to interact on various social media platforms is crucial in order to survive and
SOCIAL MEDIA AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE 6

thrive in this age of digital communication. Now a days, billions of people around the world use

social media to share information and make connections. On a personal level, social media

allows you to communicate with friends and family, learn new things, develop your interests,

and be entertained. On a professional level, you can use social media to broaden your knowledge

in a particular field and build your professional network by connecting with other professionals

in your industry. At the company level, social media allows you to have a conversation with your

audience, gain customer feedback, and elevate your brand. (University Communication and

Marketing, South Florida- 2017)

The purpose of this study is to acquire student’s perception about this kind of

phenomena. The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of social media on academic

performance of students by their own experiences. This research aims to develop and discover

how Social Media affects students Academic Performance. We would like to introduce our social

problem like this.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

Related Studies

Academic Performance

Mehmood & Tawir (2013), the use of technologies such as social media networks and the

Internet is one of the most important factors that can influence educational performance of

students positively or adversely.

Salvation & Adzharuddir (2014) students are able to formulate group discussions to

exchange ideas and communicate to their teacher as well as well appear to their student and

creates groups to collaborate on projects and communicate with their fellow lectures from other

universities through SNS, thus facilitating teaching & learning process and the enhancement of

academic performance.

Englander et al., (2010), he observed that students spend more time using SNSs for other

purposes apart from educational use, thus affecting their academic performance.

Roblyer et al., (2010) explained that SNSs are sources of communication among students

and lecturers in their respective faculties.

Social Media

Kaplan and Haenlein (2010) defined it as a group of internet based applications that build

on the ideological and technological foundations of Web 2.0,allows the creation and exchange of

user- generated content and depend on mobile and Web based technologies to create highly
SOCIAL MEDIA AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE 10

interactive platforms through which individuals and communities share, create, discuss and

modify user- generated content.

Devis et al (2012) he mention that the social media technology (SMT) as a web-based

and mobile application that allow individuals and organization to create, engage and share new

use generates or existing contrast in digital environment through multi-way communication.

Dalhmstorm et al (2011), he said that a big portion of social media users is made up of

youths where most of them are college students. In fact, a recent survey of 3000 students from

across the US shows that 90% of college students use Facebook and 37% use Twitter.

Perceptions about using Social Media Sites

Mazer et al (2010), positive perceptions obtained from users of social networking sites

i.e. effective learning which has resulted in an easy learning climate among students. They

concluded that Facebook networking site is used by students more frequently and also faculty

members. Recent data obtained from Facebook through there spokesperson, showed that

approximately 297,000 users are university faculty members, although there are pros and cons in

each case.

(Keenan and Shirii, 2009), they explored how social networking sites encourage

friendliness through the use of Facebook and Twitter. There study referred that the numerous

approaches can be used to encourage amiability among students which leads to a positive effect

from SNSs user’s point of view.

CHAPTER III: METHODOLOGY

This chapter consists of Research Design, Population and Sampling, Instrumentation,

Procedure, and Statistical Treatment of Data

Research Design

This study will be conducted in Tanza National Trade School- Main Campus. A case

study methodology will be used, because it is an open to an emergent research design and allows

multiple data collection methods (Merriam, 1998; Stake, 2005; Yin, 2003). According to Stake

(2005), a case study creates useful knowledge by providing insight, changing, or redrawing

generalization. A case study methodology recommends the use of multiple methods to

understand the case being explored, including the collection of both qualitative and quantitative

data (Merriam, 1998; Stake, 2005; Yin, 2003).

Population and Sampling

The population of this study will be consisted of the Electronic Senior High School

students of Tanza National Trade School. Purposive sampling will be done.

Instrumentation

The instrument of this study will be questionnaire. A questionnaire for survey will obtain

quantitative data, while list of questions for interview will obtain qualitative data. It will be

consisted profile of the respondents, perceptions of students.

SOCIAL MEDIA AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE 15

Research Procedure

The survey questionnaire will be accommodated, will be retrieved from the Electronic

Senior High students. For the interviews, 10% of the whole population will be interviewed. The

research instruments will be distributed in a purposive sampling. A questionnaire (see

appendices 1.......page 35). A list of questions (see appendices 2……page 36).

Statistical Treatment of Data

The quantitative data will be collected will analyze by using frequency table. Frequency

Table will be used for the demographic profile of the respondents, which will use for profiling

the students age, gender and General Point Average (GPA). Proportion will be used for the

qualitative data will being obtained from interviews. Chi- square for those questions which will

be collecting preferences information such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat.
