PROBLEM STATEMENT:
You are to design and produce a siphon system that reduces the water level by at least
30%.

DURATION
You are given 1 WEEK to complete and submit the assignment.

MATERIALS
1. Two (2) buckets
2. Water
3. One (1) clear tube (siphon)
4. Ruler/measuring tape
5. Stopwatch
Note: The items can be replaced with any other available material at your home.

INSTRUCTIONS
1. This assignment is group work.
2. Maximum FOUR (4) members per group.
3. Develop your plan to solve the problem.
4. Draw the working flowchart that will be taken to complete the task.
5. Brainstorm ideas/research on:
a) The working principle of a siphon.
b) Application of siphon in real life.
6. Decide on the materials and dimensions to be used in your design. For e.g. PVC pipe of 2
cm diameter, tank size 1067 mm (L) x 1067 mm (W) x 711 mm (H).
7. Conduct design analysis using the information in item 6.
8. Design analysis should consist of:
a) A free-body diagram.
b) Relevant equations/principles.
c) Work calculations.
9. Tabulate data (if necessary) and state any justifications/assumptions made.
10. Fabricate the siphon system according to your design.
11. Record a video of your finalized designed siphon system in actual operation.
12. Answer the following questions.
a) From the design analysis, what is the pressure at the crest of the siphon?
b) From the design analysis, what is the design discharge of the siphon?
c) What is the actual discharge of the siphon?
d) Evaluate whether the siphon system can reduce the water level in the bucket by
30%.

TESTING THE SIPHON SYSTEM

1. A video must be recorded to test your finalized siphon system.
2. For verification, the following information/data should be shown in the video or as pictures
in the report:
a) The dimensions of the actual items used (e.g. siphon tube/hose/pipe diameter,
tank/bucket/container)
b) The elevation from the ground to the base of the top bucket.
c) The elevation from the top bucket's free surface to the siphon's crest.
d) The initial and final water level in the top bucket.
e) The volume of water collected from the siphon and the time taken.
3. Set up the siphon system. Place one bucket on a stool (higher elevation) and the other
bucket on the ground (lower elevation).
4. Fill the top bucket with water.
5. Place one end of the tube in the top bucket. Make sure the tube top end is submerged in
the water at the base.
6. Measure the elevation from the ground to the base of the top bucket.
7. Measure the initial water level in the top bucket.
8. Measure the elevation from the water surface (top bucket) to the crest of the siphon.
9. Create a vacuum on the opposite lower end of the tube by suction.
10. Once the water reaches the opposite lower end of the tube, immediately place it in the
bottom bucket.
11. To determine the actual discharge of the siphon by collecting the water from the tube's
lower end and recording the time.
12. Measure the volume of water collected with the time taken.
13. Measure the final water level (top bucket).

THE FOLLOWING ITEMS MUST BE SUBMITTED:

1. Report should consist of:
a) Introduction:
 Inclusive of a brief explanation of the siphon working principle and application in
real life.
b) Work flowchart
c) Design analysis
d) Discussion
e) Conclusion
f) References
2. Video showing your siphon system in operation. Uploaded on YouTube.
3. Deadline: 29th Jun 2022 11:59 pm (midnight)
