Pre-Reading: Dear students, before we read the chapter ‘The Brave Tailor’, let us try to answer these
questions:

Summary
Once upon a time a wicked giant came into a kingdom. He troubled the people and destroyed their homes.
Many courageous men tried to stop the giant but could not. The king announced a big reward for the person
who could defeat the evil giant. A poor tailor named Zed came to the king and said that he could defeat the
giant. The king did not believe him, he laughed and told Zed that he was too young to defeat the giant. Zed
was a wise man. He told the king that he could defeat the giant by using his intelligence. The king was happy
and he let Zed go to the giant. Before leaving, Zed put some cottage cheese in one pocket and a bird in another.
Then he went in search of the giant. When Zed met the giant, the giant told him that he was not afraid of him.
The giant picked up a stone and squeezed it hard till water dripped out of it. Zed told the giant that it was an
easy task. He took out the piece of cheese and squeezed it .Water flowed on to the ground. Next, the giant
threw a stone so high that it took time to fall to the ground. Zed took out the bird and threw it high in the sky.
The giant waited for it to fall but the bird had flown away. The giant was happy to meet someone stronger
than him. He told Zed that he could be his brother. The giant then took Zed to meet his friend, a genie. They
talked for a while and then the giant and the genie fell asleep under a big tree. Zed filled his pocket with stones
and climbed up the tree. He threw a stone at the giant. The giant thought that the genie had hit him so he began
to fight with him. The genie too got angry .The giant and the genie fought till they both went into the jungle
and never came back. When Zed returned he was made a soldier in the king’s army.

Lesson no.: 6 Topic: The Elephants and the Mice
Pre-Reading: Dear students, before we read the chapter ‘The Elephants and the Mice’, let us try to answer
these questions :
 Do you like stories?
 Name some stories that you have read.
 Have you ever seen an elephant?
Summary
Long ago there was a city. On one side of the city, there was a lake and only mice lived there. On the other
side of the city, there was a jungle. In the jungle, lived a herd of elephants. They were ruled by a wise and
good king. One summer, there was no rain and the elephants did not get any water to drink. They decided to
go to the lake. As the elephants rushed through the city, they did not see the tiny mice. Many mice came under
their feet and died. The rest of the mice held a meeting and decided that three wise mice would go and talk to
the Elephant king. They went to the king and told him about the incident. The king realized his mistake and
promised that this would not happen again. The mice thanked the king and told him that even though they
were tiny but they might be helpful to elephants someday. After many days, some trappers came to the jungle
to trap elephants. Many elephants were caught. The Elephant king remembered the words of the tiny mice. He
sent his queen to the mice to ask for help. The mice came to the place where all the elephants were tied and
cut the ropes with their sharp teeth. The elephants were free. Thus, the big elephants and the tiny mice became
good friends.

Lesson no.: 7 Topic: A Ride on the Metro


Pre-Reading: Dear students, before we read the chapter ‘A Ride on the Metro’, let us try to answer these
questions:
 Have you ever seen a Metro train?
 Do you like a ride on the Metro?
 Have you ever travelled in it?
Summary
Tinu and Rina are visiting their aunt- Anjali and cousin- Benu who live in Delhi. They have come from Gaya.
Gaya has cars, buses, rickshaws, cycles but no Metro. The children request their aunt to take them for a ride
on the Metro. When they reach the Metro station they see that the station is underground. They are excited to
see an escalator (a stair that moves). Their aunt teaches them how to buy a token. Benu explains them that
Metro trains don’t have names but have a coloured line on them to indicate the station they will go to. Benu
shows them how to use the token. The children get into a train which moves underground, so they are unable
to see anything. The traffic on the roads moves above them. Their aunt tells them that the name of the stations
are announced before reaching and displayed on a board inside the Metro. The children get off at their station
and feel very happy to have ridden on the Metro.

Lesson No. 5 Poem: The Mother Bird
Pre-Reading: Dear students, before we read the poem ‘The Mother Bird’, let us try to answer these questions:
 Do you like birds?
 Have you ever heard a bird singing?
 Have you ever seen the babies of a bird in a nest?
Summary
The poem is basically a dialogue between a little boy and a bird. The bird has little chicks in her nest and she
does not want anyone to touch her baby birds, as they are very small and might get hurt. The little boy promises
that no harm will be done to her babies. The bird can sing fearlessly while her babies can rest.

Grammar
Verbs (is, am, are, was, were, has, have)
We use 'is' when we speak about one person or thing.
Example: The bucket is small.
We use 'are' when we speak about more than one person or thing.
Example: The bananas are ripe.
We also use 'are' with 'you'.
Example: You are a good cook.
We use 'am' only with 'I'.
Example: I am eight years old.

Pronouns
Words that are used in place of nouns are called pronouns. He, she, it, you, they, we, us, I and me are some
pronouns.

Introduction
The solar system comprises of eight planets. They revolve around the sun. Earth is the third planet from the
sun. It is made up of land and water. Earth is the only planet where life exists because of the presence of air
and water on it. The earth moves around the sun and receives heat and light from it.
The sun shines during the day. It gives us light and heat.
The moon is round in shape and is much smaller than sun. The moon does not have any light of it's own. It
shines because it reflects the light of the sun.
