LESSON NO. 5 TOPIC: THE BRAVE TAILOR
Pre-Reading: Dear students, before we read the chapter ‘The Brave Tailor’, let us try to answer these
questions:
Are you brave?
Do you feel scared of anything?
What are the qualities of a brave person?
Summary
Once upon a time a wicked giant came into a kingdom. He troubled the people and destroyed their homes.
Many courageous men tried to stop the giant but could not. The king announced a big reward for the person
who could defeat the evil giant. A poor tailor named Zed came to the king and said that he could defeat the
giant. The king did not believe him, he laughed and told Zed that he was too young to defeat the giant. Zed
was a wise man. He told the king that he could defeat the giant by using his intelligence. The king was happy
and he let Zed go to the giant. Before leaving, Zed put some cottage cheese in one pocket and a bird in another.
Then he went in search of the giant. When Zed met the giant, the giant told him that he was not afraid of him.
The giant picked up a stone and squeezed it hard till water dripped out of it. Zed told the giant that it was an
easy task. He took out the piece of cheese and squeezed it .Water flowed on to the ground. Next, the giant
threw a stone so high that it took time to fall to the ground. Zed took out the bird and threw it high in the sky.
The giant waited for it to fall but the bird had flown away. The giant was happy to meet someone stronger
than him. He told Zed that he could be his brother. The giant then took Zed to meet his friend, a genie. They
talked for a while and then the giant and the genie fell asleep under a big tree. Zed filled his pocket with stones
and climbed up the tree. He threw a stone at the giant. The giant thought that the genie had hit him so he began
to fight with him. The genie too got angry .The giant and the genie fought till they both went into the jungle
and never came back. When Zed returned he was made a soldier in the king’s army.

Introduction
The solar system comprises of eight planets. They revolve around the sun. Earth is the third planet from the
sun. It is made up of land and water. Earth is the only planet where life exists because of the presence of air
and water on it. The earth moves around the sun and receives heat and light from it.
The sun shines during the day. It gives us light and heat.
The moon is round in shape and is much smaller than sun. The moon does not have any light of it's own. It
shines because it reflects the light of the sun.
We see so many stars in the sky at night. Stars too give us light.

Wrap-up activity
Aim: To reinforce the concept of subtraction.
Material required: Abacus, beads and cards with different subtraction problems.
Steps:-
1. Student may pick up a card with a subtraction problem. For example 43-12
2. Put 4 beads in the tens rod and 3 beads in the ones rod.
3. Now remove one bead from the tens rod and 2 beads from the ones rod.
4. Thus 3 beads will remain in the tens rod and 1 bead in the ones rod.
5. Therefore on subtracting 12 from 43 we will get the difference 31.
6. Repeat the activity with different subtraction problems.
