OBJECTIVES

1 ) To choose suitable material for the product

2 ) To know the advantages and disadvantages of the selected

manufacturing process
INTRODUCTION
PIN BADGE

A badge is a divide or accessory, often containing the insignia

of an organization, which is presented or displayed to indicate
some feat of service, a special accomplishment, a symbol of
authority granted by taking an oath
( police and fire ), A sign of legitimate employment or student
status, or as a simple means of identification. They are also
used for advertising, publicity, and branding purposes.
SUITABLE PROPERTIES

(Physical) the object should have good toughness,

Tough so that it can maintain the quality of being
strong and not easily broken (the object
should withstand a good amount of impact
before it deforms)
(Mechanical) is the wearing away due to chemical reaction
Corrosion/ due to oxidation. The product should have a
good resistant to corrosion to remain its good
Stainless shape (color finishes and its form will be
compromised due to corrosion)
Corrosive reactions include ulcers, bleeding,
bloody scabs, and, by the end of observation
at 14 days (in an animal experiment),
discoloration due to blanching of the skin,
complete areas of alopecia, and scars which
can be quite harmful if contacted to human
flesh.

(Thermal) The item must be at high

High Thermal thermal conductivity to
maintain its shape
Conductivity due to high environmental
temperature.

SUITABLE MATERIAL

PARTS OF BADGE MATERIAL

SHELL ALUMINIUM TIN
PINBACK ALUMINIUM TIN
MYLAR ALUMINIUM TIN

All these parts are made up by aluminium cans

THE PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF

ALUMINIUM TIN MATERIAL

COLOUR AND STATE Solid, Non-magnetic, Silvery-white with a

slight bluish tint
STRUCTURE Has a face-centered cubic structure that is
stable to the melting point
SURFACE Highly reflective
HARDNESS Soft

DUCTILITY High ductility. It can be beaten very thin.

MALLEABILITY High malleability. This material is very

capable of being shaped or bent.
THERMAL Has a thermal expansion coefficient of 32.2,
EXPANSION which expands half the range of the
aluminum
CONDUCTIVITY The good electrical and thermal conductor

CORROSION Corrosive resistance due to a self-protecting

oxide layer
DENSITY Has a low density

MELTING POINT The melting point of approximately 1220°F

AND BOILING POINT The boiling point of approximately 4,478°F

Suitable Manufacturing Process

Possible manufacturing process:

● Metal casting process
● Forming process (die cutting)

Proposition / Metal casting Forming (die cutting)

Manufacturing
Process
Pros ● Produce large parts ● Excellent
● Produce complex dimensional
shapes accuracy
● Further finishing is ● Superior finished
not required edges to other
● High rate of metal stamping
production processes
● Improve properties ● Multiple features
of materials can be added
● Economical for
large production
runs
● Part flatness in
retained

Cons ● Mold is expensive to ● Longer time take

create due to finishing
step

Forming Process (Die-Cutting)

Reasons:
● Cheap
● Fast production rate
● Inline with the parts needed to make a pin
● Suitable for small parts

The process:
1. Tin cans are brought in from the recycle centre to start
the manufacturing of the pin badges.
2. The cans will then be hand sorted to remove any
defacted cans from the bunch. It’ll then be cleaned from
impurities.
3. Cans are then flattened to form sheets of aluminium foil.
4. Make the design of the pin badge for the mold that will be
blanked on the aluminium sheet.

CONCLUSION

From our knowledge and observations, we can conclude

that aluminium button badges are the most appropriate
souvenirs related to earth day. We decided to make tin button
badges as souvenirs on Earth Day. The aluminium button
badge is made up by recycled cans which are common
commercial metal waste in the world. Aluminium is a
well-known metal that has been important in the food canning
industry since the 19th century. The impact of that situation so
many aluminium cans were not recycled since the industry
still digging for bauxite and producing new aluminium cans for
the food canning market.

Hence, We have been choosing aluminium as our main

material to make recycled button badges for all parts of the
button badge because we want to promote the habit of 3R
and as our support to save the planet.

Furthermore, we choose aluminium cans as our metal

because it's easy to find, cheap, smooth on shaping, have
non-toxic elements, silvery-white metal, and lightweight.

We have a suggestion about the blanking process which

is one of the sheet metal forming changed to deep drawing
process. Since we are used aluminium as our metal button
badge, deep drawing most suitable process to create
disc-shaped directly
