CE 141-2 M2 Part II

Solve the following:

1. Determine the CN for a development on soils consisting of 33 % group B and 67 % group D.

The proposed land use is

30 % Residential which is 20 % impervious

20 % Residential which is 38 % impervious
15 % Pasture Land, poor condition.
20 % Forest Land, poor cover.
15 % Parking Lots, plazas, schools, etc.

SOLUTION:

SOIL GROUP
LAND USE B D
% CN PRODUCT % CN PRODUCT
Residential which is 20% impervious 9.9 68 970.2 20.1 84 1889
Residential which is 38% impervious 6.6 75 495 13.4 87 1165.8
Pasture Land, Poor Condition 4.95 79 391.05 10.05 89 894.45
Forest Land, Poor Cover 6.6 66 435.6 13.4 83 1112.2
Parking lots, plaza, schools, etc. 4.95 98 485.1 10.05 98 984.9
33 2479.95 67 455 5845.75

2. A 2,400,000 m² watershed is to be developed. The CN for the proposed development is 90,

and 75 % of the hydraulic length will be modified by gutters and storm drains; 75 % of the
area will be impervious. The average slope is 6 %. Compute the present and future peak
runoff from a 100 mm rainfall. The present CN is 80.

SOLUTION:

PRESENT:

From Table 13-6: Total present run-off= 51

From Fig. 13-7: present peak= 2.5 × 10−1

From Table 13-7: for 6% slope= 1.17

Present Peak Discharge from Design Storm

𝟏𝟒. 𝟗𝟐𝒎𝟑
𝑄 = 51(2.5 × 10−1 ) =
𝒔
FUTURE:

From Table 13-6: Total present run-off= 73

From Fig. 13-7: present peak= 1.2 × 10−1

From Table 13-7: for 6% slope= 1.17; future development flow= 1.3

From Fig. 13-10: result of increase imperviousness=1.27

Future Peak

𝟏𝟔. 𝟗𝟐𝒎𝟑
𝑄 = 73(1.2 × 10−1 )(1.17)(1.3)(1.27) =
𝒔

3. A trench 100 ft long is excavated parallel to the river, as shown in fig. 3-5. The aquifer
thickness B is 19 ft, and the trench is 400 ft from the river. During a pumping test, a 10 ft
differential head was maintained while pumping was steady at a rate of 10 gal/min. What is
the indicated hydraulic conductivity of the aquifer?

SOLUTION:

𝑄 = 𝑘𝑗𝐴

𝑔𝑤 𝑓𝑡 3
𝑄 = 10 = 1.34
𝑚𝑖𝑛 𝑚𝑖𝑛
ℎ = 10𝑓𝑡

𝐿 = 400 𝑓𝑡

𝐴 = 100 × 19𝑓𝑡 2
ℎ 10
𝐾= =

1.34 = (𝑘)(100 × 19)
