CE 141-2 M3 Exam Part 2

Solve the following:

1. A trench 80 ft long is excavated 500 ft away and is parallel to a river bank. A sand aquifer is
40 ft thick and similar to that shown in Fig. 3-6 The river water surface is 50 ft above the
horizontal bottom of the aquifer. If the water depth in the trench must be maintained at
10ft, at what rate must water be pumped from the trench? How far from the trench will the
aquifer cease to be saturated? Use K of sand = 30 ft/day

SOLUTION:

a.
𝑄 = 𝐾 {2𝐵(ℎ₁ − 𝐵) + ( 𝐵² + ℎ₂²)}/2𝐿
𝑄 = 30{2 × 40(50 − 40) + (40² + 10² ) /(2 × 500)
𝑓𝑡

𝑑𝑎𝑦
𝑓𝑡 31.169𝑔𝑎𝑙
𝑄 = 75 × 80 = 6000 ≈

b.
𝑄 = 𝐾(𝐵2 − ℎ22 )/2(𝐿 − 𝐿1 ) 𝑏𝑢𝑡 𝑥 = 𝐿 − 𝐿1
( 402 − 102 )
75 = 30
2𝑥
𝑋 = 300

2. An aquifer slopes away from a river, as shown in Fig. 3-7 The hydraulic conductivity of the
aquifer which is 20 ft thick is known to be 0.1 ft/day. The water is 20 ft deep in the river, and
the bottom of the trench is 30 ft below the bottom of the river and 600 ft away from the
edge of the river. The trench is 40 ft deep. Will water flow out of the trench without
pumping? If so, what will be the rate of flow?

SOLUTION:

𝑍2 = 0
𝐾𝐵(ℎ2 + 𝑧2 − ℎ1 − 𝑧2 )
𝑄= −
𝐿
= −0.1 × 20 (40 + 0 − 20 − 30)/600
= 0.03 𝑓𝑡 3 /𝑑𝑎𝑦
3. A well in an unconfined aquifer is pumped at the rate of 50 L/s ( 800 gal/min.). The thickness
of the aquifer is 30 m. and the elevation of the phreatic surface is 25 m. above the
underlying aquiclude at an observation of well 20 m away from the well and 34.6 m above
at a well 50 m. away. What is the value of K for this aquifer?

SOLUTION:
2𝜋𝑘(𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑐𝑘𝑛𝑒𝑠𝑠)(ℎ2 − ℎ1 )
𝑄= 𝑟
ln ( 2 )
𝑟1
2 × 𝜋 × 𝑘 × 30 × (34.6 − 25)
