EQUALITY, INCLUSION AND DIVERSITY POLICY

Our Pre-School provides equality of opportunity for all children and families. We take positive action to
eliminate discrimination in all areas of our work. We do not discriminate against a child or adult with
disabilities and make reasonable adjustments for them. We aim to provide a secure environment in
which all our children can flourish, where all contributions are valued, and positive non-stereotyping
information is provided about gender roles, diverse ethnic and cultural groups and people with
disabilities. We aim to improve our knowledge and understanding of issues of anti-discriminatory
practice, promoting equality, valuing diversity and making inclusion a thread running through all the
activities we offer. The Pre-School works in accordance with the Equality Act 2010 and Special
Educational Needs and Disability Act 2014.

Admissions

 The Pre-School is open to every family within the community.

 We provide information in clear, concise language, whether in spoken or written form.
 Our admission policy is based on a fair system.
 We do not discriminate against a child or their family or prevent entry to our setting, on the basis
of colour, ethnicity, religion or social background: i.e. members of the travelling community or
asylum seekers.
 We do not discriminate against a child with a disability or refuse a child entry because of any
disability. We will develop an action plan to ensure that people can be included in our setting and
the curriculum we offer.
 We will take action against any discriminatory behaviour by staff or parents. The display of openly
racist insignia, distribution of racist material, name calling or threatening behaviour are
unacceptable either in or around the Pre-School and will be dealt with in the strongest manner.

Employment and Training

 Staff vacancies will be advertised and all applicants will be judged against specific and fair criteria.
 We will appoint the best person for the job treating all applicants fairly, subject to references and
checks by the Disclosure and Barring Service.
 Commitment to the Pre-Schools Equal Opportunities Policy will be a requirement of all staff and
training will be sought, to encourage them to develop anti discriminatory and inclusive practices,
which enable all children to flourish.

Families

The Pre-School recognises that many different types of family successfully love and care for children.
The Pre-School aims to offer support to all families.
 We encourage children to contribute stories of their everyday life in the pre-School.
 We encourage parents/carers to take part in the life of the Pre-School.
 For families who have a first language other than English we value the contribution their culture
and language offers and develop means to ensure their full inclusion.
 The Pre-School offers a flexible payment system for families with differing means.

The Curriculum

Scout Hall Pre-School Ltd Policies and Procedures – Reviewed 21/07/2022

The curriculum offered in the Pre-School encourages children to develop positive attitudes about
themselves, as well as to people who are different from themselves and to empathise with others. We
do this by:
 Making children feel valued and good about themselves.
 Ensuring that children have a quality of access to learning.
 Recognising the different learning styles of boys and girls, ensuring that we provide a wide range
of provisions so that each child receives the widest possible opportunity to develop their skills
and abilities.
 Positively reflecting a wide range of communities in the choice of resources.
 Avoiding stereotypes and derogatory images in the selection of materials.
 Celebrating festivals relevant to children and families in our area and/or our
Pre-school.
 Creating an environment of mutual respect and tolerance.
 Helping children to understand that discriminatory behaviour and remarks are hurtful and
unacceptable.
 Ensuring that the curriculum offered is inclusive of children with special educational needs and
children with disabilities.
 Ensuring that children whose first language is not English have full access to the curriculum and
are supported in their learning.
 Ensuring that children speaking languages other than English are supported in the continuing use
and development of their home language(s).

Food

We work in partnership with parents to ensure that the medical, cultural and dietary needs of children
are met. We help children learn about a range of food and encourage their awareness of different
cultural approaches to meal times and eating, and to respect the differences among them.
