CITY OF KHORSABAD

• The city covered 1.11 square miles


(1.78 Square kilometers) with a
length of 5,770 feet (1,758.6
meters) and a width of 5,364 feet
(1,635 meters) and was surrounded
by a wall which was 45 feet (14
meters) thick and 39 feet (12

• Wall was of dressed stone footing


and mud brick superstructure.

The state chambers had their own


court, which were dado slabs over
7’ high bearing reliefs of the king
and his courtiers.
The left throne room, about
160’x35’ was the outmost of the
state suite planned around its own
internal court and had flat timber
ceiling which was rare and costly

• The main entrance to the palace grand court was flanked by great towers and
guarded by man- headed winged bulls nearly 12’6” high supporting a bold
semicircular arch decorated with brilliantly color glazed bricks.

• The plastered walls bore a painting decorative and a triple band of friezes, framed in running ornament

• Walls were thick about 20’ on average.

• The three chief temples had stone dados at


the foot of the façade with high plinths
projecting from the wall, faced in polychrome
glazed bricks portraying sacred motifs and
serving as pedestals.
• In the Grand and Temple courts decoration
was contrived by sunken vertical paneling on
the whitewashed walls and towers, finishing

in stepped battlements above and stone

• It is worth noting that the only


Ziggurat of the city is associated
with the palace and not with the
nabu temple nearby.
• On a square base of 148’ side, the
seven tiered Ziggurat rose to the
same height as 148’ ascending by a
winding ramp 6’ wide.
• The successive tiers were paneled
and battlement and were painted
in different colors on the plastered

Within the mud brick platforms of the palace there


were jointed terracotta drains to carry away rain
water , joining larger drains of burnt brick covered
with vaults which were slightly pointed and in
which the brick courses were laid obliquely.
