JIS Z 8401. Guide to the rounding of numbers 3 Terms and definitions For the purposes of this document, the terms and defi- nitions given in JIS K 6200 and the following apply a) adhesion strength force per unit width required to cause a separation at the interface between the assembled components(") Note (!) Any separation occurring at any other point, for example inside either component under test, is a failure of the component material, and does not indicate an adhesion strength. In such cases, the adhesion strength is greater than the strength of the weakest component involved. There fore, it is important in this test that the condition of fracture of the separated surface is observed together with the determination of the adhesion strength, and the evaluation is carried out taking into con- sideration the separation and fracture types as shown in 10.2 4 Principle The stripping force required to separate two plies of fabric bonded with rubber, or a rubber layer and a fabric ply bonded together, is measured under speci- fied conditions using test pieces of standard dimensions in the form of a flat strip. 5 Test machine The test machine, specified in JIS K 6272, power-driven and equipped with a suitable dynamometer, shall be capable of maintaining a substan- tially constant rate of traverse of the moving head during the test. PROTECTED BY COPYRIGHT 3 K 6256-1: 2006 The machine shall be fitted with grips capable of holding the test piece and the ply to be separated without slipping during the test. a) Dynamometer An inertialess dynamometer (of the electronie or optical type, for example) should preferably be used. It shall be capable of measuring force with an accuracy at least Class 2 as defined in clause 4 of JIS K 6272. b) Autographie recorder, with a scale sufficiently large to permit easy interpre- tation of the trace, or computer with graphic capabilities and software enabling it to comply with the procedure for data processing described in JIS K 6274. 6 Test piece 6.1 Test piece shape and dimensions The test piece shall have a width of 25.0 mm £0.5 mm and shall be of sufficient length to permit ply separation during measure- ment over a length of at least 100 mm (at least 150 mm is required if the length of the grip part, which is approximately 50 mm, is considered). ‘The minimum thickness of the constituent components, or of one of them, shail be such that the weakest com- ponent can transmit the force necessary for separation without breaking. 6.2. Test piece sampling and preparation The sampling and preparation of test piece shall be as follows. a) The test piece shall be cut in the specified dimensions, the longitudinal direction of the cut surface being parallel to warp and transverse direction, to weft, When a part of yarn gets scraped off by the cutting due to the irregularity of yarn di- rection even if the cut is precisely in parallel to the weft or to the warp, the test, Piece shall have a little greater width, except for the ply to be separated which shall have the specified width of 25 mm. b) The thickness shall be suitably reduced as specified in 8.2 of JIS K 6250, if necessary, in order to ensure that the line of separation of the plies during the test: lies as close as possible to the plane (180°) of the strips of test piece held in the grips (see figure 1, Cdeal)). For tests intended to be comparable, the test pieces shall have the same dimensions. ==> Tension axis < Line of separation Line of separation Figure 1 Position of line of separation of plies c) Whenever possible, the standard test piece shall be cut from the article and prepared in accordance with the relevant product standard, if one exists, PROTECTED BY COPYRIGHT FI? = IA a oss oa POPP ey 4 K 6256-1 : 2006 7 Number of test pieces Unless otherwise specified, three test pieces shall be tested 8 Test method 8.1 Test conditions The test conditions shall be as follows. a) The standard temperature in the laboratory shall be as specified in 6.1 of JIS K 6250. If the standard humidity in the laboratory needs to be controlled, 6.2 of JIS K 6250 shall be referred to. b) The storage of specimen and test pieces shall be as specified in clause 7 of JIS K 6250. ©) The conditioning of test piece shall be as specified in clause 9 of JIS K 6250. If the separation of test pieces requires buffing, the interval between buffing and testing shall be not less than 16 h and not greater than 72h, d) The standard laboratory temperature shall be as specified in 11.2.1 of JIS K 6250. For the test at temperature other than above, select it from the specifi- cation in 11.2.2 of JIS K 6250. 8.2 Procedure ‘Take the test piece as described in 6.2 and separate a ply of fabric or a rubber layer by hand for a distance of approximately 50 mm. The use of a scal- pel or similar implement may be necessary to initiate the separation. Fix the sepa- rated ends of the test piece in the grips of the test machine (clause 5), and adjust so that the tension is distributed uniformly and so that no twisting of the test piece will oceur during the test. Place the body of the test piece in the non-driven grip and the ply to be separated in the power-driven grip so that the angle of separation is approxi- mately 180° as shown in figure 1, It is important to ensure that the strips of test piece held in the grips lie in the same plane. ‘The rate of travel of the power-driven grip shall be 50.0 mm/min+5.0 mm/min. Over a length separation of at least 100 mm, the wavy curve of adhesion strength shall be recorded. ‘The adhesion strength shall be ob- tained from this wavy curve in accordance with the specification of JIS K 6274. Information: When it is not the interface separation at the adhesion part but tears are produced in vuleanized rubber layer or thermoplastic rub- ber layer during the test, a cul is given in order to obtain the adhesion strength of interface at the adhesion part and the test should be continued again after it recovers to the interface sepa- ration at the adhesion part. In such a case, the recorded values of tears of vulcanized rubber layer or thermoplastie rubber layer shall be excluded. 9 Calculation The calculation shall be as follows. a) For the adhesion strength of the test piece, calculate the peak value of the medi- ans of the wave form (in the case of method A, B or C) or the average (in the case of method D or E) in accordance with the method A, B, C, D or E in JIS K 6274. b) The adhesion strength shall be calculated according to the following equation. PROTECTED BY COPYRIGHT 5 K 6256-1; 2006 where, Tr: adhesion strength (N/mm) Fr: resistance to separation (N) 5: width of test piece (mm) 10 Expression of test results 10.1 Adhesion strength The adhesion strength shall be the median of the val- ues obtained by the individual test pieces. The median shall be expressed with the rounding width of 0.1 as specified in JIS Z 8401. 10.2. Expression of type of separation or failure Describe the type of separa- tion or failure using the following terminology: a) failure in the rubber layer (symbol: R); b) separation between the rubber layer and the adhesive (symbol: RA); ©) separation between the adhesive and the fabric (symbol: AT); 4) failure in the rubber bond between two fabric plies (symbol: RB); e) failure in the fabric (symbol: T); ) separation between the rubber and the textile when no adhesive is present (symbol: RT). 11 Test report ‘The test report shall include the following particulars: a) a reference to this part of JIS K 6256; b) all details necessary for the identification of the sample; ©) the type of test piece used, and the test piece dimensions; d) the rate of ply separation; e) the temperature and relative humidity of the test; f) the nature of the interface between the assembled components and calculated adhesion strength; g) method of analysis of wave form used to calculate the adhesion strength; h) the adhesion strength; i) the type of failure or separation; i) the date of testing; k) other matters to be noted.
