Miss Lee wishes to put up a decoration in the form of an Astroid design on the wall of her
office.

An Astroid is so-called due to their star-like appearance (refer to the diagram above). In order
to optimise the space on the wall, Miss Lee decided to set an assignment for her JC2 H2 Math
students to calculate the arc length of this particular Astroid represented by the equation
2 2
x3  y3  1 . Without using a calculator, find the exact arc length of the Astroid. [5]
11 Upon graduation, Shayna worked as an investment banker at a local bank. Her annual salary for her
first year was $a. As one of the top performers, she was offered two employment schemes upon
confirmation.

Scheme 1: A fixed annual increment equivalent to 30% of her first year annual salary.
Scheme 2: An annual increment of x% .

(i) If Shayna chooses Scheme 1, show that her total salary earned over the first n years would be
$na(0.85  0.15n) . [2]

(ii) If Shayna chooses Scheme 2, she would earn $91200 in her 4th year and a total of $228,000
from her 2nd to 4th year of work. Calculate her annual percentage increase in salary and first
year annual salary. [5]

(iii) Shayna plans to work for another bank after 6 years with her current bank.
(a) Which employment scheme should she choose in order to maximise her total earnings for
these 6 years of work? Support your answer with working. [3]
(b) If the new bank offers her a starting salary equivalent to her last drawn pay, explain if she
should reconsider her choice of employment scheme in part (iii)(a). [2]
