3 Ace borrowed 10 books and 3 audio-visual items from a library. The library imposes fines
for books and audio-visual items that are overdue. The fines per day for a book and an audio-
visual item are x cents and y cents respectively, where x and y are in multiples of 5 cents.
Four days after the due date, Ace realises that he has not returned any books or audio-visual
items to the library when he is in school. He has k books (and no audio-visual items) with
him then, and has the following two options.
Option A
Return the k books that he has with him to the library when he is on his way home and return
the remaining books and audio-visual items to the library the following day. The total fine
he has to pay, in this case, is $14.55.
Option B
Return all books and audio-visual items to the library the following day. The total fine he
has to pay, in this case, is $15.

Sketch C, indicating clearly the key features of the curve.
[You are not required to give the coordinates of the axial intercepts.] [4]
State the range of values of m such that there is no intersection between C and the line
y mx 4m 2 . [2]
5 Relative to the origin O, the position vectors of points A, B and C are a , b and c
respectively. It is given that a 3 and c 4 , and the angle between a and c is 60
7 The diagram shows the graph of y f x . The curve has a minimum point at 3,8 , a
maximum point at 2,1 and axial intercepts at the origin and 3, 0 . The curve also has

(i) The point P on OC is such that AP gives the shortest distance from A to the line
OC. Find the exact position vector of P. Hence state the ratio of the area of
triangle OAP to the area of triangle OAC in the form of x : y where
x, y . [3]
(ii) The point M is the midpoint of AB and the point E on CM is such that
ME : EC :1 . Given that the point N lies on BE produced such that A, N and
C are collinear and AN 2 NC , find the value of . [6]
(iii) Given that the line passing through A and C and the line passing through B and D are
skew lines, what can be said about the value of ? [3]
10 John’s annual income was $80000 in 2009 and he spent all his income in that year. In the
next 10 years, his salary increased by $5500 per year, but inflation caused his expenditure
to rise by 3% from his expenditure in the previous year. Show that his expenditure in 2011
was $84872. [1]
Assuming that John kept the remaining amount of his income after expenditure as savings
each year, find the total amount of money that John saved by the end of 2019, giving your
answer correct to the nearest dollar. [4]
At the start of 2020, due to the Covid-19 situation, there was no more increment in John’s
salary. Instead, as a member of the senior management team in his company, John accepted
a 20% reduction in pay to help his company. Assuming that John would be paid equally for
all 12 months in 2020, find John’s monthly salary in 2020. [2]
As the economy is uncertain in 2020, John decided to cut down on his expenditure and
started a new savings account. On 1st January 2020, John put $500 into the savings account,
and on the first day of each subsequent month, he would put another $500 into the account.
The interest at a rate of 0.25% per month, is calculated and added to the account on the last
day of each month.
Show that the amount of money in John’s account on the last day of the nth month is given
by t 1.0025n 1 , where t is a constant to be determined.
Hence, find the month and year in which the amount of money in John’s account first
exceeds $10000. Explain whether this occurs on the first day or last day of the month. [5]

12 [It is given that a cone of radius r and height h has volume r h. ]

Haruto makes an inverted solid right cone as shown in Figure 1 below. It has a top radius of
r m, a height of h m and a slant side of 1 m.

(i) Find the exact value of r, which gives the maximum volume of the cone. [5]
Haruto wants to use the inverted solid right cone in Figure 1 to design a hollow decorative
art piece that looks like a circular onsen pool in the shape of an inverted frustum (see Figure
2 below). The bottom of the solid inverted cone is removed to form an inverted frustum such
that the ratio of the radius of the top surface to the radius of the bottom surface of the frustum
is 2 : 1 . A uniformly thin layer of clay with negligible thickness is applied around the curved
surface area and the bottom of the inverted frustum. After the layer of clay is dried, the
inverted frustum is removed and the hollow decorative art piece is formed.
Figure 2
Water is now running into the decorative art piece from a faucet at a constant rate of 0.02 m3
per minute. At time t minutes, the radius of the water surface is x m.

(ii) By taking r , show that the volume of the water in the art piece, at any time t

minutes, is given by .

Hence determine the rate of change of x when the volume of the water in the art piece
is 0.2 m3 . [7]
