Welcome

Teaching Others
Do you remember helping your school friends study? I found
it was one of the best ways to ace a test. Why? Because teaching
others cemented my own understanding.
I was reminded of the importance of peer-to-peer learning as I
read “Counting Stars” (pages 20 to 23). In this story, Pepe Parrot
helps his friend Spunky Monkey learn to count in Spanish. In the
process of counting the stars, both characters learn something new.
We love to hear from you! Spunky realizes he can turn to his friend for help. And Pepe develops
eds@highlights.com confidence in his ability to teach someone else what he knows.
Long ago, one-room-schoolhouse teachers sometimes had to rely
on the older students to teach the younger ones. You can, too. Step
aside when you can and encourage your child to help and share
what he knows with friends or siblings. Your child’s confidence will
soar as he discovers he’s capable of doing things for himself and for
others, too!
Sincerely,
Sincerely

Kathleen Hayes, Editor

A Mother’s Day Surprise

#Z -JTTB 3PWFUDI t "SU CZ "NZ 8VNNFS

“Good morning,” said Ms. French. “Today we will start

working on our Mother’s Day presents.”
“Isn’t Mother’s Day still kind of far away?” asked Indi.
“Yes,” said Ms. French. “But our presents are going to take
some time to grow.”

She handed everybody a small plastic zipper bag,
a wet paper towel, and a couple of small dry beans.
The kindergartners put their beans on top of the
wet paper towel, put the towel inside the bag, and zipped
it shut. Then they wrote their names on their bags.
“Our beans need the sun’s warmth in order to sprout,”
said Ms. French as she taped the bags to the windows.
Over the next few days, the kids could see roots
growing out of the beans.

May 2017 7
The next week, Ms. French gave each child a small pot
and stickers so they could decorate their pots.
When the beans had strong roots and small sprouts,
they were ready to plant in the special pots.
When the children finished planting their seedlings,
they put the pots in front of the windows.

On the Friday before
Mother’s Day, the twins
took their plants home and
hid them in their bedroom.

On Mother’s Day, Tex and Indi gave them to their mom.

“We grew these sprouts just for you!” said Tex.
“Two perfect sprouts from my two perfect twin sprouts!”
said Mom. “I love them. And I love you, too!”

Counting Stars
By Ana Galán Meet Spunky Monkey and his pal Pepe Parrot.
Art by John Nez
They live in the Costa Rican rain forest.

It was a starry night in the rain forest. Pepe Parrot and

Spunky Monkey had climbed up into some trees to look at
the sky.
“Look! It’s a full moon!” said Spunky. “The moon is so
big and round!”

20 May 2017
“¡Mira! ¡Hay un millón de estrellas!” said Pepe.
“One million stars? That’s a lot of stars! Let’s count in
Spanish,” said Spunky. He was learning Spanish.
“Great idea,” said Pepe. “It will be good practice for you.”

Spunky started
counting. “Uno,
dos, tres.”

¡Mira! ¡Hay un millón de estrellas! Uno, dos, tres.

Cornelia and the Nut

A Retelling of “The Princess and the Pea”
#Z$ISJTUJOF&WBOTt"SUCZ3JDP4DIBDIFSM

Poor Cornelia Rex is having a terrible night. “Maaaa-ma!”

she yells. “I can’t sleep. Something is poking me!”

Mama Rex climbs up the stairs with a quilt to put

on top of the mattress, tucks Cornelia back
into bed, and whispers, “Good night.”

26 May 2017
But Cornelia
is still unhappy.
“Maaaaaa-ma!”
she roars. “I
still can’t sleep.
Something is
jabbing me!”

Mama comes back upstairs and puts two more

quilts on Cornelia’s bed.

May 2017 27
When Mama hears Cornelia cry, “Something is still
he dra more ..

and adds them to Cornelia’s bed.

28 May 2017
But as soon
as she gets back
downstairs, guess
what she hears.
“Maaaaaaaa-ma!
I truly can’t
sleep. There’s
still something
pricking me!”

Empty-handed, Mama stomps upstairs, pulls all the quilts

and the mattress off Cornelia’s bed, and finds . . . a nut!

May 2017 29
Mama removes the nut, puts the mattress back
on the bed, tucks Cornelia in, and kisses her
sweet dinosaur noggin. As her mother tiptoes out
of the room, Cornelia calls . . .

“Mama!”
Mama holds her breath.
But Cornelia simply stretches and says, “Good night!”

Little Bunny
Celebrates Spring
#Z&JMFFO4QJOFMMJt"SUCZ3PTF.BSZ#FSMJO

Little Bunny had great plans for the first day of

spring. He would wear his new sneakers and play ball
with his friends. He would picnic in the park with
Granny. Then he’d help Papa wash the car and pick
flowers for Mama.
But when Little
Bunny woke up on the
first day of spring—
it was raining.
He sighed. “Now
I can’t wear my new
sneakers.”
“But you can wear
your favorite slippers,”
said Mama.
“I can’t play ball with
my friends,” said
Little Bunny.
“But you can invite
them here to play a
game,” said Mama.
After his friends went
home, Little Bunny
turned to Granny. “No
picnic today.”
Granny smiled. “Who
said ‘no picnic’!”

She led Little Bunny to the back porch

where they had a very nice picnic indeed.
Instead of washing the car, Little Bunny
and Papa cleaned the garden tools.

Instead of picking flowers for Mama, Little Bunny

decorated the daisy cookies Mama baked.
It wasn’t the first day of spring Little Bunny
expected. It was even better.
