In these type of reactions, the reaction occur in more than one step such
that atleast one of the product of each step is the reactant in next step.
Initial reactant
A + 2B 2C + 3D
2D E + 5F
3F 2G + 4H
Final product
EXAMPLE
EXAMPLE A + B ⎯→ 4C + D
(excess)
C ⎯⎯→ 2E
If in the above reaction 2 moles of A are taken initially, find moles of ‘E’
produced.

EXAMPLE NaBr, used to produce AgBr for use in photography can be self prepared
as follows :
Fe + Br2 → FeBr2 ....(i)
3FeBr2 + Br2 → Fe3Br8 ....(ii)
Fe3Br8 + 4Na2CO3 → 8NaBr + 4CO2 + Fe3O4 ....(iii)

EMPIRICAL AND MOLECULAR FORMULA
Empirical formula
Molecular formula
(1) First of all find the % by wt. of each element present in the
compound.
(2) The % by wt. of each element is divided by its atomic weight. It gives
mole ratio of elements present in the compounds.
(3) If the number of moles of atom are not in simplest whole number
ratio the divide or multiply with a suitable constant, so as to obtain
simplest ratio.
(4) Write the Empirical formula as we get the simplest ratio of atoms.
