AIM: To make five designs on the fabric by Tie and Dye method.

INGREDIENTS: Five pieces of cloth (12”x 12”), thread, material for design ( pulse, rajma, pebbles,
whole coriander, etc.) colour, pan, mug, salt, wooden spoon, bucket.

METHOD: Tie and dye is a very old method of making designs on the fabric. Rajasthan and Gujarat
are very famous for it. These days this is in fashion.

In tie and dye method, the cloth is tied with a thread in different patterns and then dyed by
the simple method of dyeing. By this the fabric is dyed except where it is tied tightly with the thread.
In this way by tying in various pattern different designs can be made. This method is known as Tie
and Dye method.

The knowledge of colour formation is essential if more than one colour is to be used in this
method. For example:

Red + Yellow = Orange Red + Blue = Purple

Yellow + Blue = Green Purple + Orange = Brown

DESIGN OF TIE AND DYE CAN BE MADE USING FOLLOWING METHODS:

1. All over design by marking tiny dots.

In this method dots are marked on the surface of the cloth at intervals either single or in
groups. These dots are then tied and dyed. For decorative effect these dots can be increased
in size by tying grams, or small pebbles into them.

2. With the help of a knot.

Dye the cloth by tying a knot. If more than one colours are to be used then dye the cloth by
tying a knot A. Then tie the knots at B or all the four corners and dye. Then tie a knot at C in
between the corners and the centre. Dye in second colour after the first colour has dried up.
To give shade, the size of knot can be increased or decreased.

3. To make circular designs. Tie the cloth like an umbrella from upside down and then dye.

4. To make designs by folding.

Take a square cloth. Fold it thrice lengthwise. In this way the cloth will have eight folds. Tie
the cloth at different places on the folds according to the designs and dye.

5. To make striped designs

Fold the cloth in different patterns and make a knot or tie it with thread to make striped
designs.

IMPORTANT POINTS TO BE KEPT IN MIND DURING DYEING

a) Use dry spoon for colour.
b) Use separate spoons and mugs for different colours.
c) Use colours after making a paste in water
d) Soak the cloth in water before dyeing
e) Use separate pans for boiling different colours.
f) Use light colours in the first place and then darker ones
g) Rinse the cloth in plain water after each dyeing
h) Dye the second colours after the cloth is dried
i) While dying in the second colours the cloth should be tied according to the design do
not untie the thread used in first dyeing
j) Dry the cloth in shadow
k) Untie the thread gently, to avoid any damage to the cloth
l) Dupattas, hankies, sofa backs, pillow covers, bedsheets, etc. are dyed by this method.
