Fight for the Truth

At the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, we are demanding the
immediate resignation of the Senators and Representatives who objected to the certification of
the 2020 presidential election. Rejecting electoral votes further allows discord across the country
and is a way to favor Donald Trump and overturn the people’s vote. Donald Trump, with his
words, incited violent acts in our Capitol and our democracy is being strained because of the
racist views he has frequently expressed. After witnessing the acts that Donald Trump has
carried out, we here at the NAACP believe that these 147 lawmakers need to resign.

Donald Trump has made countless mistakes and has made negative changes to individuals' lives
while serving as President. He had uplifted the impact of white supremacy in every aspect of
public life in this nation. We, the NAACP, believe that we can take back our nation and organize
the resistance capable of doing so.

These politicians should resign because they failed to certify an election that was fair and square.
It is evident that President Biden won the election. Donald Trump and his campaign on Dec. 9,
2020 filed a petition claiming there was fraud in the presidential election and that there should be
a recount in Milwaukee and Dane County. But the NAACP-Wisconsin State argued that the
Trump campaign was targeting two counties with the largest Black populations in the state in
order to disenfranchise Black voters. This is just one instance in which, because of his loss,
Donald Trump needs to peacefully hand over the power of the United States. Even during his
election, Donald Trump was creating racist accounts.

More recently, we as a country and at the NAACP witnessed the Capitol under attack by
individuals who had no other objective other than to disrupt America as we know and love. This
attack was a show of failed leadership by Donald Trump, who is still silent and continues to
perpetuate lies and disinformation for his personal gain. Donald Trump is continuously chipping
away at the civility, integrity, and dignity of our nation, and the certification of the 2020
presidential election should not be objected to by Senators and Representatives. They need to
resign.

Even after the attack on the Capitol, these Senators and Representatives believe that there was
voter fraud that did occur during the 2020 presidential election. Some of the claims included that
“voting machines fraudulently switched votes to Biden, that large numbers of Trump ballots
were destroyed, and that Republican election officials were unduly restricted from observing
polling stations” (Pennycook and Rand). It is known that false beliefs about election fraud and a
Trump victory were widespread among Trump voters during the election. Donald Trump himself
was responsible for “dozens of false and misleading claims about the prevalence of election
fraud in the U.S.” (Pennycook and Rand).

Although Senators and Representatives believe the election was misleading and think their
objections to the election results' certification were from a good conscience, they also believe
they should not resign.

Our goal at the NAACP is to ensure a society in which all individuals have equal rights without
discrimination based on race, but we believe Donald Trump has continuously discriminated
against the American people. These Senators and Representatives need to resign because of their
fight against the peaceful transition of power and the reasons why they believe the 2020
presidential election incorporated fraud.

Founded in 1909 in response to the ongoing violence against Black people around the country,
the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) is the largest and
most pre-eminent civil rights organization in the nation. We have over 2,200 units and branches
across the nation, along with well over 2M activists. Our mission is to secure the political,
educational, social, and economic equality of rights in order to eliminate race-based
discrimination and ensure the health and well-being of all persons.
