THE USE OF MAPS
The technique and the concepts of maps had a great advancement with
Greeks. In Aristotles time (350a. C.) it was believed that the earth was a
sphere and later Eratostenes ( director of Alejandria´s library and died in 194
a.C.) Calculated the earth´s circumference with a stonishing accuracy.
Today, we know he miscalculated by only 400 kms. Geographers and
astronomers of that time conceived the concepts of the poles, the tropics
and the Ecuador. Another wise, Tolomeo (who lived between the 85 and the
165 d.C.) wrote “the guide to Geography” which was an inspiration to
navigate the coasts of Africa, Asia and America.
HOW IS A MAP MADE TODAY?
Among the cartographic sciences that
are used today to make maps, we have
geodesy, topography, photogrammetry, remote sensors, SIG, GPS, maths,
statistic, multimedia, virtual reality. The cartography´s greatest revolution is
the global positioning system (GPS), who works by a constellation of 24
satellites, which are operated by the Defense department of the United States.
This allows topographers and investigators, and the general public determines
the exact location where we are located by just pressing a button in a hand-
held device despite any weather condition. As of now, we can obtain the
precise latitude and longitude of any location in the world.
TYPES OF MAPS
The maps range from traditional to paper printed static, either loose or pasted to
animated maps in digital screens.
There are other types of maps : topographic (reflect the elevation of the ground),
navigation maps (which include maps of the subway trains, roads, nautical and
aeronautical ), thematic maps (geological, weather, vegetation) , statistics maps
(show data as population or temperature), Topological maps ( they look at the
information they spread).
There are also maps that cover different áreas (local, regional, national, and
continental)

FESTIVALS AND FOOD
Festivals. We have a large number of popular festivals related to the cycles
of sowing and harvesting and harvest cycles (Inti Raymi, Mama Negra or
Corpus Christi), civic dates (the founding of Guayaquil, Quito or Cuenca) or
with the sacred history and rituals of the Church (SeLas Roots of the Azuay).

These celebrations we must add those of recent appearance in our country,
promoted by the cinema and television, such as Halloween, Santa Claus and
the Christmas tree. These elements have gradually have been incorporated
into our popular culture.
Popular food. The great variety of dishes, local and regional foods, and the
different ways of eating are another expression of our diversity. In many
cases, certain dishes characteristic of a region or locality (such as repe
lojano or mote pillo azuayo), have become national foods, whose has
consumption has even transcended the country's borders. Ecuadorian food
is consumed in the United States and Europe.
