INTRODUCTION

Situation Analysis

“In 34 years, I’ve never seen a more volatile business environment than the one

we are operating in today. Technology and social media have completely changed the

concept of competitive advantage.” (Frissora, 2013)

At present, the need for transportation services continues to increase. Competition

between companies in this line of business is very tight. To make ends meet in this

endeavor, every company continues to innovate and improve services to its customers

(Hidayat et al., 2019). The automotive industry comprises a wide range of companies and

organizations involved in designing, developing, manufacturing, marketing, and selling

motor vehicles. It is one of the world's largest economic sectors by revenue. One of the

thriving businesses in the automotive industry is the car rental business.

The rapid spread of COVID-19 is having an enormous impact on the travel and

tourism industry affecting the car rental market in parallel. In 2020, United States car

rental has been badly affected since it relies on air traffic for a lot of its business. As a

result of the lowered demand, airport car lots are filling up with unused vehicles and

some companies have had to rent additional off-site parking to store extra vehicles or to

reduce the size of their fleet. Hertz, an American car rental company based in Florida, has

announced temporary closures of almost 600 locations while Avis, also an American car

rental company, announced cost-saving measures that include a 70% reduction in its

workforce and a 20% reduction in its fleet. (Lynch, 2021)

In contrast, statistics (2020) reported that 6.0% of Filipino are booking cars

costing 6,500 pesos per transaction when the pandemic started because of limited

transportation. Because of these experts expect that the revenue will grow by 6.83%,

resulting in a projected market volume of 42,950,000,000 pesos by 2025. According to

ResearchandMarkets.com (2020), the Philippines’ car rental market is concentrated with

a few players such as Nissan Rent-A-Car, Europcar, and Hertz. Sedans dominated the

market of car leasing in the Philippines in the year 2018. The segment is driven by factors

such as corporate leasing for employee commute and a rise in business activities where

Sedans are preferred due to affordability.

Because of this, analysts at Ken Research in their latest publication "Philippines

Car Rental, Car Leasing, Cab Aggregator and Yellow Taxi Market Outlook to 2023 –

Driven by Planned Fleet Addition and Growth in Tourism and Construction Sector"

believe that the car rental market in the Philippines will grow due to intense competition

amongst the major domestic players to grab the maximum market share by aiming to

provide better value-added services and as many benefits and promotional offers.

The Cab aggregator market, well established in the metro cities, is now setting up

a wider network in the non-metropolitan regions. Grab, the market leader has been able to

capture the metropolitan regions. The new players are focusing on establishing

themselves in the non-metro cities to tap into the un-catered market. In Region I alone,

Google Maps listed 20 different car rental businesses in different places in the region.

Among those car rental companies include Gerrys Tricycle Shop located in Vigan City,

Ilocos Sur, Marcelo Transport Services in Alaminos, Pangasinan and Charles Rent a Car

and Truck Freight Services in Dagupan, Pangasinan. Car renting is essential to many
peoples’ plans to travel or move from one place to another for business purposes, tours,

and visits or holidays.

Similarly, a new player in the business emerged in La Union known as “Uncle

John’s Car Rental”. Uncle John’s Car Rental was established in 2020 and is servicing

areas within La Union, Pangasinan, Manila, and Baguio City. The company owns 4 cars

– Accent, Honda, Elantra, and Fortuner. The business started with 3-5 customers in 2020

and had increased to 40-50 loyal customers towards the end of 2021. At present, travel

and car rental booking activities at Uncle John’s can only be done by online reservation

thru their Facebook page, via phone call, and by word of mouth (referrals). Like most car

rental businesses, Uncle John’s and its customers are bounded by terms and conditions

outlining the responsibilities of all parties involved including terms on damages incurred

while the contract is active.

These days, car rental companies such as Uncle John’s are looking for

opportunities that can make them stand above their competitors in the market. At present,

the car rental business is full of challenges and competition, and in such a scenario,

companies do not want to miss any chance to improve their services and present them

better than their competitors. Car rental companies are adopting new technologies and

tools to face the competition. (Chiarugi, 2019)

Over the past few decades, car rental organizations have been maintaining their

business by utilizing the conventional strategy for promoting their business by

distributing notices in papers and broadcasting commercials on TV channels and different

methodologies. In addition, all client records are stored in hard copy or soft copy

depending on the method the company uses (Lazov, 2017). If the company uses a more
traditional method, the staff would store everything in hard copy and file it into the

cabinet of their company. This method is very time-consuming when it comes to filling

and retrieving information and is certainly not secured (Oliveira et.al, 2017). If the

company uses a slightly modern method, the company would use a computer to key in

their customers ' information in excel format and store it in computer storage. This

method is less time-consuming and slightly secure when compared to the traditional

method but still requires the admin to manually key in all client information (Oliveira

et.al, 2017).

Regardless of whether or not to use mobile technologies in the car rental industry,

traditional ways of dealing have proven to work, but not in terms of speed and reliability

(Oliveira et.al, 2017). Thus, some car rental companies started building its website and

mobile app to enable customers to make online vehicle reservations (Marhayanie et al,

2018). The broker of UbiGo Mobility Service has acquired various transport service

provider sectors, including the car-sharing company, the car rental company, and so on

(Sochor et al., 2016). UbiGo app allows its customers to access everything from making

reservations to checking their UbiGo account balance by logging into the app using a

Google or Facebook account (Sochor et al., 2016). Anyone can easily notice that

companies are trying to revolutionize their businesses to adopt the mobile technology that

has been growing rapidly in recent years.

Therefore, in this work, the researchers aim to propose an android base

management and monitoring system that is secured and allowed the users to make a

reservation of the vehicle that is desired. The mobile car rental system includes features

such as a register and login page, a list of vehicles, and a database related to the mobile
car rental system. The proposed prototype shall also contain features such as customers

renting a car based on the location, time, and date, and choosing the type of vehicle they

want. Customers can also see the latest info & promos announced and report complaints

and suggestions. The application will also include cashless options ranging from the bank

to e-wallet. The above activities can be done directly through an android smartphone.

This method is more efficient and easier to use because it makes it easier for customers to

rent a rental car at any time without having to call or come directly to the place, making it

more cost-effective, time and energy. And the company can confirm car rentals and can

monitor the traveling fleet that is operating.

Statement of Objectives

The main objective of this study is to develop a system that enables common

people to easily find a form of transportation using android base management and

monitoring systems

Specifically, it sought to accomplish the following:

1. To determine the functional and non-functional requirements of Uncle John’s car

rental mobile application from customers’ and the company’s perspectives.

2. To design and develop a mobile application system for a car rental using the agile

model.

3. To determine the level of usability of the mobile application by using Post-Study

System Usability Questionnaire (PSSUQ).

Time and Place of the Study

This study will be conducted during the 1st Semester of the school year

2021 - 2022 until 2nd Semester of the school year 2021-2022 at Don Mariano Marcos

Memorial State University Mid La Union Campus located at San Fernando City, La

Union.
Definition of Terms

Android-based management and monitoring system will serve as a wide system

to provide quality service for car rental, to be convenient and efficient in delivering

information for the customers’ needs.

Booking refers to the act of reserving cars thru rentals using android base

management and monitoring systems.

Functionality requirements refer to the technical details, data manipulation and

processing, and other specific functionality that define what a system is supposed to

accomplish.

Technical details contain profile, account, and platform credentials It also

includes a blueprint for the post-launch maintenance of the app and services

documentation.

Data Manipulation will include the screen and file organization, keypad

insertion, refresh/update operation, functionality of buttons, insertion ad deletion of data,

copy and paste operations, uploading options, etc.

Data processing is synchronizing all the data entered into the software to filter

out the most useful information.

Non-functionality requirements pertain to the specific criteria such as

compatibility, reliability, accessibility, maintainability, serviceability, and security that

can be used to judge the operation of Uncle John’s car mobile-based rental application.

Compatibility testing is checking or validating that the application behaves as

expected across the combination of mobile devices and browsers that your customers will

be using to access your application.

Reliability is the probability of a piece of software operating without failure while

in a specified environment over a set duration of time. It measures defect-free probability,

instances of downtime, and performance in every scenario.

Accessibility refers to making websites and applications more accessible to people

with or without disabilities when they are using mobile phones and other devices.

Maintainability refers to handling any number of connections from the user side,

backend API interaction, and error handling. Maintainability is a way to iterate on

software products by adding a new feature for fixing bugs efficiently.

Serviceability is an expression of the ease with which a component, device, or

system can be maintained and repaired. Early detection of potential problems is critical in

this respect.

Security focuses on the software security posture of mobile apps on various

platforms like Android, iOS, and Windows Phone. This covers applications that run both

on mobile phones as well as tablets.

The Agile Development Model is a software development life cycle to be used in

developing Uncle John’s Car Rental Mobile Application. It will help organize designing

and planning methods, development, and testing methods during a software lifecycle. It

includes methods such as quick response to any changes with the help of adaptive

planning, joint elaboration of requirements, rationalization of tasks performed by the

development team, and step-by-step software development with strict time frames.

(Sharma, 2020)

The level of Usability determines how easily the developed system can be used,

how it behaves when errors ad faults occur, and whether it contains appropriate help
functions and a manageable person-machine interface. In doing such, the researcher will

be using a PSSUQ version 3 questionnaire to assess the usability of the software.

Post-Study System Usability Questionnaire (PSSUQ) version 2 which was adopted from

Rautela (2010) is a 19-item standardized questionnaire. It aims to address the following

five system usability characteristics namely completion of work, ease of learning, high-

quality documentation and online information, functional adequacy and rapid acquisition

experts, and several different user groups that were identified by a panel of IBM human-

computer interaction (HCI) experts.

Chapter 2

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

This study is a descriptive-developmental method research design. Descriptive

research design, according to Shuttleworth (2012) is a valid method for researching

specific subjects and as a precursor to more quantitative studies. Descriptive research

aims to accurately and systematically describe a population, situation, or phenomenon. It

can answer what, where, when, and how questions, but not why questions. A descriptive

research design can use a wide variety of research methods to investigate one or more

variables. Unlike in experimental research, the researcher does not control or manipulate

any of the variables, but only observes and measures them. In this study, the researchers

will describe the functionality, non-functionality, and level of usability of the proposed

android-based management and monitoring system.

Meanwhile, Richey (2007) stated that Developmental Research involves the

production of knowledge with the ultimate aim of improving the processes of

instructional design, development, and evaluation; involves either specific problem-

solving or general inquiry procedures. Developmental research techniques not only

expand the empirical methodologies of the field but also expand the substance of

instructional technology research. Developmental research is a situation in which

someone is performing instructional design, development, or evaluation activities,

studying the process, and providing consistent criteria or empirical evidence for their

effectiveness. This method of research is also contemplated as the most suitable since the
study dealt with the development of the proposed android-based management and

monitoring system.
Materials and Procedure

This study utilized a survey questionnaire, particularly PSSUQ version 2,

interviews with guide questions, and documentary analysis to assess the functionality,

non-functionality, and level of usability of the proposed android-based management and

monitoring system.

In identifying the functional and non-functional requirements of the proposed

android-based management and monitoring system, the researchers will use documentary

analysis as well as an interview with guide questions. The data gathered from the result of

the interview was used to accomplish the second objective of the study. In this work, the

features of the Mobile Car Rental System were involved in the functional requirement. It

offers customers the information they need to be able to make a car rental reservation and

keep track of it. In addition, the Mobile Car Rental System offers the admin the ability to

upload the latest rental car photo and details, keep track of the customer's vehicle

reservation and make changes to the existing rental car details. The following are the

modules that will be designed for the Mobile Car Rental System.

Login Module: The purpose of this module is to ensure that when users key in

their email address and password, the app securely signs every authentic user into the

app. This particular module also ensures that only authenticated users can access the

database.

Search Module: This module allows users to search the vehicle they are looking

for by typing the vehicle's brand or model.

Payment Module: This module allows users to pay for the vehicle they choose to

rent. Users are allowed to make full payments or partial payments via credit card

transactions.

Admin Module: This module will only be accessible to users with registered

admin roles in the database. This module allows the admin to upload rental car

photographs and details, keep track of customer vehicle reservations, and also make

changes to existing rental car details.

Ease of use: The Mobile Car Rental System is carefully developed to ensure that

users can use the app with ease. Users can browse through the car rental list when using

the app, where users can check the availability of that particular car before making a

reservation. In addition, users can easily call the company, email the company, and

navigate to the company by simply tapping on the App's About page button.

User Friendliness: The Mobile Car Rental System is designed to be as user-

friendly as possible with the intention of minimizing unnecessary navigation, procedure,

ads, and so on. In doing so, the app will provide straightforward navigation where users

can easily navigate through the entire app.

In the process of designing and developing the proposed android-based

management and monitoring system, the researchers used Agile Developmental Model.

The Agile development model is built on collaborative decision-making between

requirements and solutions. In the agile development model, work is done in sprints that

last two to four weeks and it uses an iterative process for developing working software.

(Dziuba, 2021)
There are six major portions of the process in the model: requirement gathering,

planning, designing, coding or development, testing, and deployment. Each of these

phases covered several associated tasks that the researchers took into consideration. The

next diagram of the model and below is a brief description of each phase.

Figure 1: Agile Model Development

In the requirements planning phase, the researchers utilized documentary

analysis to define and analyze the problems encountered by Uncle John’s Car Rental.

Based on the required information to be gathered, the researchers analyzed the possible

solution from what is identified in this study. If there is no complete output in the

previous phase, the researchers cannot proceed to the next phase until the team agrees to

the proposed solution.

During the planning phase, the researchers analyzed if the requirements gathered

are attainable based on the given resources, cost, and time. The researchers then created a

Gantt chart for the schedule and distributed specific tasks to the members.

In the design phase, the researchers used different diagrams and models that

represent the process of the system. Creating wireframes and prototypes of the system has

been done in this phase. The design of the system was based on the gathered data in the

requirement phase.

Figure 2: User and Admin Activity Diagram

The most crucial and challenging part of this cycle is the development phase.

The coding started, and all the requirements gathered from the client have been

implemented and applied. In developing the system, the researchers used Reactive Native

as a text editor and front-end development of the system and Firebase will serve as the

database and initial server, and Visual Studio for Admin Web System. Early and frequent

testing is also required rather than waiting for the development to be completed, testing

occurs as features are added.

In the testing phase, the team conducted a beta test for the application and was

also put to test by IT professionals to ensure that the features of the proposed application

of Uncle John’s Car Rental android-based management and monitoring system are

implemented and solved the problems of Uncle John’s Car Rental.

And for the last objective of the study, the researchers used the last phase of the

agile development model, the deployment and evaluation phase. If the system is ready

for release, this will be the time for the researchers to present and show the complete

system to the client. A survey questionnaire modeled after PSSUQ has been used to

assess the level of usability of the proposed application of the proposed android-based

management and monitoring system implemented and to solve the problems of Uncle

John’s Car Rental. To track and evaluate the performance of the system, the researchers

used simple random sampling or representative sampling methods for the distribution of

the survey questionnaires and feedback to come up with a result from the respondents. In

getting the sample population of the clients of Uncle John’s car rental, the researchers

utilized simple sampling. The researchers considered the total estimate of their clients in

the past 6 months. In estimation, it ranges from 90-to 120 clients. The researchers then
considered a minimum average of 90 clients in six months and used the Raosoft software

in calculating the sample population of Uncle John’s car renters allowing a 10% margin

error with an 80% confidence level and 50% standard deviation. The table shows the

result of 29 clients of every third to be identified by the owners. In addition, the

researcher considered total enumeration when it comes to IT Professionals and owners

taking into account their small population. As a result, the study will have 34 respondents

composed of thirty-nine (29) clients of Uncle John’s Car Rental, both two (2) car rental

business owners and three (3) IT Professionals.

CHAPTER 3

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

Functional and Non-functional Requirements of Uncle John’s Car Rental: An

Android Based Management and Monitoring System

The researchers conducted an interview with 3 I.T. Experts to determine the

functional and non-functional requirements and it was administered using an interview

guide questionnaire. Based on the interview, the functional requirements of the Uncle

John’s Car Rental: An Android Based Management and Monitoring System includes the

ability of the proprietor to accept the booking, to inform the customer’s about the car’s

functions and accessories, and clients to choose between pick-up or drop-off point, to

provide insurance including collision damage, to choose the time on when to pick-up or

deliver the rented car, to easily access the company, to provide G-cash, E-wallet and walk

in to pay the booking, to provide the proof of payment for confirmation, to provide the

rating and comments on the service.

The construction and development of Uncle John’s Car Rental android-based

management and monitoring system were made through the Agile Method. Uncle John’s

Car Rental is an android mobile and web application that was created to help people in

renting a car in a convenient manner, regardless of the pandemic circumstances. This

platform service will help people to rent a car in particularly in rural areas. Uncle’s

John’s Car has two main features: Fast Booking, Fast Transaction, Fast booking is the

main function of Uncle John’s Car Rental which the application asks the user what car

they want to rent and how many days and how much to pay. Fast Transaction allows the

client to pay thru GCash or Cash on Delivery.

The researchers created Uncle John’s Car Rental android-based management and

monitoring system using the Agile Method. The Agile Method is divided into six phases,

each of which assisted and directed the researchers in identifying the needs they needed.
