Lesson Plan of Compound Words-I

English Grade IV
Students’ Learning Outcomes
 Use common compound words in speech and in your own writing.

Information for Teachers


 A compound word is the result of two words being joined.
 A compound word is made up of two words that come together to make one new word. For
example: Bed + time = bedtime. Eye + sight = eyesight

 A compound word is made when two words are joined to make a new word. Examples: air+
plane= aero plane, play+ ground= playground, etc.

 Compound words are words that are formed from complete words.
 Studying compound words is fun. It helps students understand the language, build an interest in
words and help prepare students to learn and differentiate prefixes, suffixes and root words.
 Compound words are words that are formed from complete words and not prefixes or suffixes.
(Week + end = weekend but week+ ly = weekly is not a compound word.
Material/ Resources
Chalk, marker, board, textbook, charts given with the plan

Worm up activity
 Write the following words on the board and draw pictures or show this on chart:
 Ask the class to find two words in each word.
 Ask some students for the answers and appreciate the right answers.
 Now help them make a few sentences for all the three compound words.
 Tell them that a compound word is a new word made from two smaller words.

Development

Activity 1
 Write and draw the following chart as given in the box below:
 While writing and drawing on the board, ask the students to read and guess the names of the
pictures.
 Then call some students one by one to write compound words in front of their pictures. Also ask
them to read the compound words when they finish writing. If one student writes a wrong word
or spelling then call other students to make corrections.
 Ask the students to copy the work from the board.
 Answer: watermelon, toothbrush, sunflower, newspaper, notebook, pineapple s
 Worksheet or test can be made using the sample.
 Use these words to make the compound words:
(Water, tooth, pine, note, book, sun, melon, flower, paper, brush, apple, news)
Sun+ flower

Tooth+ brush

News+ paper

Water+ melon
Pine+ apple

Note+ book

Activity 2
 Divide the students into two big groups. Encourage them to choose names for their teams, such
as Tigers, Roses, Stars, etc.
 Draw a table on the board with two columns. Write names of the 2 teams in the columns.
 Tell the students that they are going to play a game and they have to make compound words
with the given words.
 Tell them that they will select a student and give him a chit with a root word written on it. These
students will come to the board to write their compound words with their team shouting out
their guesses.
 Tell the students that all words must make sense.
 Root words: post, tooth, back, sun, play, break, tea, moon, after (possible answers for each root
word are given in brackets)
1. Post(man/box/office), 2. Tooth(paste/brush/ache),3. back (ground/ache/ward),
4. Sun (shine/flower/set/rise, play(ground), break (fast), birth (day), tea (spoon), moon (light),
after (noon)
 Ask the other group to tell the correct word if a group member writes a wrong compound word.
 Allow only two words per group. This will save time.

Activity 3
 Do the activities given in the textbook about compound words.

Sum up / Conclusion
 Ask the students to tell about compound words with examples.

Assessment
 Ask them to tell some compound words from their textbook.
 Copy the following chart on the board or make a test/worksheet.
 A compound word is made from two smaller words:
(Rain+ bow= rainbow, foot + ball =football)
 Put the two smaller words to make compound word. Draw a picture for the compound word.

Follow up
Take at least five compounds words from the textbook and ask students to use them in sentences of their
own.
Make a class display or mini-book of compound words as shown in the sample below. Get one compound
word with sentences from each pair or group of students.
