Determining the
Effect of Textual
Aids on
Understanding a
Text
Grade Level: Grade 10

Objective:
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to determine the effect of textual aids,
such as advance organizers, titles, non-linear illustrations, etc., on the understanding
of a text.

Materials:
Texts with different types of textual aids
Whiteboard or blackboard
Markers or chalk
Handouts
Projector (optional)

Engage:
Begin the lesson by displaying a text on the board or using a projector.
Ask the students to read the text silently.
After a few minutes, initiate a class discussion with the following prompts:
"What challenges did you face while reading the text?"
"Did you find any textual aids in the text? How did they help you understand
the content?"
"What do you think is the purpose of using textual aids in a text?"

Explore:
Provide the students with different texts that contain various types of textual aids,
such as advance organizers, titles, non-linear illustrations, etc.
Divide the students into small groups and distribute the texts accordingly.
Instruct each group to read their assigned text and identify the textual aids present.
Encourage the students to discuss within their groups and note down their
observations.

Explain:
Bring the students back together as a whole class.
Ask each group to share their findings and observations about the textual aids in
their assigned texts.
Facilitate a class discussion by asking the following questions:
"What types of textual aids did you find?"
"How did these textual aids contribute to your understanding of the text?"
"Can you provide examples of how textual aids clarified or enhanced the
meaning of a particular passage?"

Elaborate:
Provide the students with a new text that does not contain any textual aids.
Ask the students to read the text individually.
After reading, instruct them to create their own textual aids for the text, such as
headings, subheadings, diagrams, or illustrations.
Allow the students to work individually or in pairs to develop the textual aids.
