deposition, which can appear in many
forms. Wet deposition is rain, sleet,
snow, or fog that has become more
acidic than normal. Dry deposition is
when gases and dust particles become
acidic. Both wet and dry deposition
can be carried by the wind, sometimes
for very long distances. Acid deposi-
tion in wet and dry forms falls on
buildings, cars, and trees and causes
damage. It can even make lake water
acidic, harming marine life. Acid depo-
sition in dry form when inhaled can
cause health problems.
WHAT IS ACIDITY?
A cidic and basic are two ways that we describe
chemical compounds. Acidity is
measured using a pH scale. A
pH scale runs from zero (the
most acidic) to 14 (the most basic
or alkaline). A substance that is nei-
ther basic or acidic is called "neutral",
and this has a pH of 7.

A cid rain is caused by a chemical reaction that
begins when compounds like sulphur dioxide and
nitrogen oxides are released into the air. These sub-
stances can rise very high into the atmosphere,
where they mix and react with water, oxygen, and
other chemicals to form more acidic pollutants,
known as acid rain.
Sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides dissolve
very easily in water. As a result, the two compounds
can travel long distances where they become part of
the rain, sleet, snow, and fog that we experience on
certain days.
Human activities are the main cause of acid
rain. Over the past few decades, human activities
have led to the release of so many different chemi-
cals into the air that they have changed the nature
of gases in the atmosphere.
Power plants release the majority of sulphur
dioxide and much of the nitrogen oxides when they
burn fossil fuels, such as coal, to produce electrici-
ty. In addition, the exhaust from cars, trucks, and
buses releases nitrogen oxides and sulphur dioxide
into the air.

piratory diseases, or can make an existing disease
worse. Respiratory diseases like asthma or chronic
bronchitis make it tough for people to
breathe. Toxic chemicals are present in the
tiny particles that fall on earth due to
acid rain. These particles are so fine
that they are easily inhaled by
humans and travel deep into the
lungs. Such particles also make
their way into indoor environments.

W ithout pollution or acid rain, most lakes and streams
would have a pH level near 6.5. Aluminium that is
released into the soil eventually ends up in lakes and

might be wondering what's being done to control
it. Regulations and new technologies are helping
reduce acid rain.
REDUCING POLLUTION
S cientists have found different ways to reduce the
amount of sulphur dioxide released from coal-burn-
ing power plants. One option is to use coal that contains
less sulphur. Another option is to wash the coal to
remove some of its sulphur. The power plant can also
install equipment called scrubbers, which remove the
sulphur dioxide from gases leaving the smokestack.
ALTERNATE SOURCES OF ENERGY
A great way to reduce acid rain is to produce energy
without using fossil fuels. Renewable energy
sources, such as solar and wind power produce much
less pollution. These energy sources can be used to
power machinery and produce electricity.
CLEANER CARS
C ars and trucks are major sources of the pollutants
that cause acid rain. While one car alone does not
produce much pollution, all the cars on the road added
together create lots of pollution. Therefore, car
manufacturers are required to reduce the amount of
nitrogen oxides and other pollutants released by new
cars. Cars that produce less pollution and labelled as
low emissions vehicles.
WHAT CAN YOU DO
Y ou must remember government agencies and
scientists are not the only ones that can take
action to stop acid rain. You can become part of
the solution too.
CONSERVE ENERGY
 Turn off lights, computers, televisions, video
games, and other electrical equipment when you
are not using them.
 Buy equipment that uses less electricity, includ-
ing lights, air conditioners, heaters, refrigerators,
and washing machines. Such equipment might have
the Energy Star label.
 Try to limit the use of air conditioning.
 Driving cars and trucks also produces large
amounts of nitrogen oxides which cause acid rain.

can carpool or take public trans-

Until the 10th boards, I didn’t have a
phone nor a social media account and
neither did I feel the need to have one. I didn’t join any coaching
classes and was completely dependent on my school and elder
sister. Since most of my family is from a science background,
they too played a major role in my journey.
Study routine
Even though studying a little bit every day is important, the
most crucial is studying really hard on the last days leading up
to the exam. What I also realised throughout these years was
that covering every part of the portion at least once was defi-
nitely more important than prioritising the important parts.
Future plans
Currently, I have chosen the ISC Science stream for the next two
years. In the future, I plan to continue in the field of computer
programming.

Success mantra
Organising my portion into a well-struc-
tured timetable has greatly helped me
tackle my exams. I would study with the
most efficiency early during the day,
and I planned my daily routine accordingly. Frequently reading
my textbooks and solving different question papers at the end
of the term prepared me well for the exams. I always had art as
an escape from times when I would find myself under academic
stress, which I believe has helped me in the long run.
Study routine
I preferred studying early in the morning. I would take a short
nap later in the day and then continue studying late till the
afternoon. I could study at a long stretch, so I structured my
study pattern in such a way that I managed to get more work
done at hours when my efficiency was high; and also take ade-
quate breaks in between.
Future plans
I intend to study engineering. As of late, I have developed an
interest in research of various sorts and I would like to do some-
thing in that field.

Secret to success
Consistency. This one word sums up my
entire journey of one year in standard
10. I contributed small efforts every day towards my goal and
was crystal clear about my purpose.
Study routine
I would wake up every day at 4am in the morning and start my
day by making a To Do list. This is a very essential step. Many
people do not plan their day ahead instead start studying direct-
ly but planning your day and year is a very important part.
The first subject which I started my day was science especially
physics for 2 to 3 hours. With a fresh mind, I was able to grasp
the concepts clearly.
Study tips
Self-study for 6 to 7 hours everyday and focus on the quality of
your study time more than the quantity. I used to take medita-
tion breaks every 30 to 40 minutes which helped me focus bet-
ter. You do not need coaching or tuition to score good marks. I
did it with self-study just by listening to my teachers carefully,
asking a whole lot of doubts and grasping the concepts.
Practice a whole lot of questions every day especially previous
year’s ones. Sample papers are also very important.

Every day I would study for 2 hours, following a timetable, with
alternating subjects. During exams, study time increases to 6 hours
a day.
Study tips
1. Practise regular revision and reading textbook
2. Practise past year papers and multiple choice question papers
3. Learn to not procrastinate a lot, take timely breaks and not
overexert.
Future plans
I would like to pursue teaching and research, so I am going into the
science stream and studying biology. I would like to become a
Biology professor one day.

One should try being a better version
of oneself. My father told me that if I
invest my time and focus on getting a
perfect score in every subject, then eventually I will stand out.
I followed this as my success mantra. It helped me a lot. Also I
always looked at the marks that I lost rather than the ones I
got; this made me efficient and kept me going.
Study routine
My routine mostly consisted of studying, but it was also a good
bundle of physical activities and hobbies. The lockdown saved
a lot of travelling time which gave me some time to pursue my
hobby of classical dance. I usually like to study late at night. I
also read several motivational quotes to keep me going.
Future plans
I moved to the US for future studies. I am planning to pursue my
dream of becoming a doctor. I love helping people and becoming
a doctor gives me that opportunity.

I wish I could say the secret to my success
is Boost but these 2Cs are the secret to my
success. C- consistency and c- covid. What
helped me the most was consistently working on self-improvement
and reflecting upon my shortcomings from time to time. Especially,
during these difficult times when we couldn’t attend school due to
covid which to led to a lack of competitive atmosphere among me and
my peers. What motivated me and helped me cope up with that was
my drive to do better than what I did yesterday, it kept me deter-
mined and focused on my goals. I am very grateful for all the support
from my teachers and my family that enabled me to achieve this feat.
Study routine and tips
My study routine involved planning and mapping my time as well as
other activities. I didn’t want to feel stuck just with studies so i
focused a lot on time management and tried to obtain a balance stud-
ies and other activities. This helped to stimulate my mind and gen-
uinely motivated me to do better. My favourite way to de-stress from
boards was to talk about it to my peers and friends, they reminded me
that i wasn’t alone in this.
Future plans
My future plans are to pursue a career in animation design, for this I
will give National Institute of Design entrance.
