S tephen Hawking was an English
theoretical physicist and cosmolo-
gist and one of the most brilliant

Hawking began his university educa-
tion in 1959 at the University College,
Oxford where he received a BA degree in
Physics. However, in 1963, Hawking was
diagnosed with a motor neuron disease
called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
that paralysed him gradually. Though the
fatal disease decreased Hawking's physi-
cal abilities, it could not deter him from
his goal to figure out the one theory that
