Title : THE USE OF LEECH’S POLITENESS MAXIM IN THE “KUNG FU

PANDA 3” MOVIE SCRIPT

Humans are social creatures who need language as a means of interaction and adjustment
with other people. Language is a form of communication. It is the most frequently used and the
most developed form of human communication. As social beings, people need to interact with
fellow humans. People use language as a means of communication in their interactions. By using
language humans can communicate and maintain relationships between people. To have a good
conversation, speakers have to know how to speak politely to listeners in order to achieve a good
utterance. The politeness principle is very important when we have a conversation. In
conversation, the principle of politeness can be considered the best way for some people to
practice or express courtesy. The speaker must maintain a good relationship with the listener so
that information can be conveyed more easily.

Politeness maxims are a theory proposed by Leech. According to Leech (1983),

Politeness Principle is minimizing the expression of impolite beliefs, and there is a
corresponding positive version or maximizing the expression of polite beliefs which is somewhat
less important. Leech proposed it to produce and understand language based on politeness. There
are six maxims proposed by Geoffrey Leech (1983) that are well known as Leech’s Politeness
Maxim. These maxims are Tact Maxim, Generosity Maxim, Approbation Maxim, Agreement
Maxim, and Sympathy Maxim. 

The maxim of politeness is not only found in our daily lives, but also in imaginative
human products such as films, novels, and others. The previous study of Leech’s maxim is
already written in 2018 and 2019 under the undergraduate thesis written by Komang Wulan
Tiarnanda Cahyani (2018) entitled “Politeness Maxims Used in the Dialogue of America's
Presidential Candidates Debate between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton” and by I Gusti
Agung Restu Bayu Bhuana (2019) entitled “The Use Of Politeness Maxims In The Movie
'Finding Dory'”; both studies were discussed about the obedience politeness maxims by Leech
that were found in the conversations occurred in the movie. The film is a combination of audio
and visual which is classified as part of literary works. the film is the best product ever made by
humans to learn how maxims operate in conversation exchange because movies are man-made
products that produce visual information that brings conversation with maxims. The title of this
study is The Use of Leech’s Maxim In The Kung Fu Panda 3 Movie Script was chosen in this
study as the data source for the current study since the movie The Kung Fu Panda 3 contains the
data that are needed in this study. This study aims to analyze the politeness maxims in literary
works to determine the types of politeness maxims and the factors that affect the politeness
maxims used by the characters in The Kung Fu Panda 3.
