Conductometric Titration

Aim :- To determine amount of HCl in given acid solution by conductometric

titration.

Apparatus :- Condutometer, Conductivity Cell, Beaker, Volumetric flask, conical

flask, measuring cylinder etc., ___N NaOH etc.

Theory :-

• The basic principle of conductometric titration is based on the fact that the
conductance of a solution at a particular temperature depends upon the no. of
ions present in it and their mobility.
• HCl is a very strong acid. It is highly dissolved or dissociated into H+ and Cl-ions.
When NaOH is added from the burette there is a formation of NaCl + H2O

NaOH + HCl NaCl + H2O

• When H+ and Cl- ions are removed, then the conductance falls down with the
consumption of HCl solution. After complete consumption of HCl from solution
• NaOH remains in the solution so the conductance increases continuously. The
nature of curve obtained for conductance vs. volume of NaOH added is as
follows.

Procedure:- Determination of strength of HCl,

1. Take 50ml of HCl in 100ml beaker.

2. Fill the burette with __ N NaOH. Dip the conductivity cell in 100ml beaker and

note down its conductance value.

3. Note down conductance value with addition of __ N NaOH increment of 0.5 ml

with constant stirring (in magnetic stirring system). Pin is not directly use (first
pin is enclosed in capillary tube and then used) continue till all two reactants are

neutralized.

4. Find out the equivalence point from the graph (conductance vs. Volume of

NaOH added). Note down equivalence point by joint perpendicular from

intersect.

5. Calculate Normality and strength of reactant.

Graph :- Plot graph of conductance vs ml of NaOH added

Calculations :-

a) Normality of HCl
HCl NaOH

N1 x V1 = N2 x V2

N1 = _0.5 X 5.86_
50

N1 =0.0586 N
c) Strenth Of HCl = Normality Of HCl x Equivalent Weight Of HCl (36.5)

Strenth Of HCl = N1x 36.5

= 0.0586 x 36.5

Strenth Of HCl= 2.1389 g / lit

Result Table :-

Solutions Normality (N) Strength (gm/litre)

HCl 0.0586 2.1389
