Hello,

My name is Maverick Putnam. I am a 16 year old sophomore at Palm

Harbor University High School. I began windsurfing about three and a
half years ago in Clearwater and immediately fell in love, it has been a
major part of my life ever since. I began racing soon after and have
been training hard to get better over the years. I’ve raced many classes
of windsurfers, but I’ve turned my focus to the Olympic class, the RS:X.

It is my dream to campaign and compete in this spectacular event and

become a professional. Although I am not yet old enough or big enough
to campaign for the Olympics, the first step is to qualify for the single
slot for male youth windsurfing in the RS:X class for the 2021 World
Sailing Youth Worlds. World Sailing is the world governing body for
sailing. The location has not been selected for 2021, but the 2019 event is in Poland and the 2020 event
is in Brazil. Without a doubt, there will be heavy travel expenses required to attend. Qualifying for the
event would give me the opportunity to test myself against the best youth sailors in the world. My goal is
to not only attend the World Sailing Youth Worlds, but to represent Clearwater and the United States
proudly, racing and winning a competitive placement, proving my readiness for a 2024 Olympic
campaign.

Training

I have been training in windsurfing for the past three years. My coach, Justin Ahearn, introduced me to
windsurfing. I had previously been on the opti sailing team, but I was eager to start windsurfing as soon as
I aged out. I get out on the water in Clearwater every chance I can. Because windsurfing is so physical, I
also have to put in training off the water. I ride my bike 15 miles one way to the sailing center to improve
my fitness and sail 4 – 5x a week. This summer I am traveling to St. Petersburg, Russia to compete in
RS:X Youth Worlds. Competing in the RS:X Youth Worlds is a huge benchmark for me. It will be the first
time I am sailing against other Olympic hopefuls in the Olympic class.

Your Support

I am training as much as possible in Clearwater, going out every opportunity I have and learning all I can
from my coach. I work yard at the Clearwater Community Sailing Center, where I train, and am now a
senior member of the windsurfing team and role model to the new crop of young windsurfers on this team
Justin has built. I also work late night events at the sailing center to help fund my pursuit. It is challenging
to balance school and work with my other goals, but I have been accepted into the Early College Program
at St.Petersburg College, Tarpon Springs, and this is a success I pride myself on.
With your help, I can get the United States back on top of a sport that was started here in the late ‘70’s. I
am up to this task; it is my greatest dream and desire, but need sponsorship help from the community to
cover the costs associated with these high level events. Your support of my [2019 RSX Campaign or
2021 World Sailing Campaign] will help continue the tradition of windsurfing in United States and can
provide your business with broad exposure in the community and the world. Windsurfing is an eye
catching sport and is especially vibrant in large groups on the race course with our bright and colorful
sails. Here is a short video I made to show you what I do: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OdAiceWrSNQ
