Mission statement:
Agrarian Resource Center (ARC) is an independent research institution based in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia.
Its main concern was to conduct critical studies toward social and agrarian issues in Indonesia and provide social
and agrarian research training for students and young activists as well as systematic studies to support the rural
social movement in Indonesia.

Main activities:

Besides conducting several studies and research, ARC also organizes regular critical agrarian studies training for
students and youths with a full institutional support scheme called “Critical Agrarian Studies of Indonesia”
(CASI). ARC offers Visiting Researcher and Research Intern program, provides opportunities for social
movement activists to reflect and write down their experiences, as well as for young researchers from various
backgrounds to develop their interests and broaden their experiences in studying agrarian issues in Indonesia.
Both will work with ARC researchers to explore research ideas, compose their design research, fieldwork/data
collecting guidance, as well as write their research findings and report.

Relevance of the study programme:

What knowledge and skills are to be developed by the candidate and why?

a. Relevance for the candidate:

I know Vita from several activities in ARC, such as internship (2016), CASI (2017), and as a researcher
at ARC (2019). I already knew her activities as a student in Anthropology at Gadjah Mada University,
including her research in Germany. The Student Research Exchange Program in Germany was an
outstanding activity, provided her with valuable experience to understand the life of other communities
and conducting research abroad. Beyond, I find her enthusiasm to study more about critical analysis on
the issue of development and agrarian/environment justice. Vita has sufficient skills and capacity to
undertake studies at master or even doctoral level in the field of Development Studies. She has strong
and serious motivation to improve her analysis level through systematic program such as provided at
the ISS. Under the auspices of ISS, I believe she will complete her studies satisfactorily and contribute
more for her further professional development as a researcher in the development related issues.

b. Relevance for the employing organization:
Deepening recent researches and debates on agrarian, food, and environment issues around the globe
and specifically in Indonesia as well as learning systematically on how the research, theories, discourse
concerning the matters be composted with the help of experts in the ISS would be beneficial to the
organization’ research and issues creation and development. Besides, strengthening the network of
Critical Agrarian scholar during Vita’s studies is encouraged by the organization since ISS is the place
where the CAS (Critical Agrarian Studies) Initiative was born. In addition, as she had prepared herself
to learn extensively about critical agrarian approach for these last 3-4 years, prior to her application to
study in ISS, it demonstrates her serious focus on critical agrarian study, which in the future may
become useful in strengthening critical thoughts and agrarian knowledge production among Indonesian
youth that align with the institution purpose and trajectories.

The candidate is expected to implement the newly acquired knowledge and skills no later than 6 months after
successful completion of the study.
Please include a plan of activities below, including their objectives and along a timeline. Please be as specific as
possible. You are advised to use the SMART method.
