2. INTRODUCTION
Background Language Style is the formality construct of the
language used to communicate with other people. This
study aims to analyze the types of language style used
and the dominant type used in “To All The Boys I’ve
Loved Before” movie. To elaborate in language style,
Joos (1976) stated that there are five language styles;
frozen style, formal style, consultative style, casual style
and intimate style. One of the ways to know language
style is by watching a movie. The conversations in
movies are presented by the actors by reciting the
dialogues written from the movie script. For those
reasons, a movie is an entertaining way of learning
language styles. The writer decided to conduct a study
about analyzing the five language styles used in the
―To All The Boys I‘ve Loved Before‖ movie based on
Joos‘ (1976) theory.
Formulation of The Problem

Data Analysis Based on five styles of language adopted from the

theory of Martin Joos (1976)

Sample There are 30 samples collected. The thirty cases

comprise of intimate (11 cases), consultative (9 cases),
casual (7 cases), formal (3 cases) and frozen (none) style

6. DISCUSSION “To All the Boys I‘ve Loved Before” movie mainly tells
about Lara Jean Covey‘s love letters that are exposed
accidentally. The movie duration is 1 hour and 40
minutes long. There are four types of language styles
found in the object of this study; they are Formal style
with three data, Consultative style with nine data,
Casual style with seven data, and Intimate style with
eleven data. The three (3) data appeared in formal style
presented that each speaker only does one-way
communication and does not need feedback from the
hearer. Consultative style is the second most frequent
style that is use in the movie, supporting nine (9) data as
the conversations happened in semiformal situation, in
which the situation is less than formal but not classified
as casual. For casual style, seven (7) data were used in
the movie and mostly spoken between friends outside of
school in more relaxed situation.
Based on the findings, the writer tends to compare the
present work with the previous researches. This movie
genre is similar with Sipahutar (2018) movie that is a
romantic genre. Sipahutar (2018) analyzed the language
styles in ―Love Rosie movie and the other researcher,
Rasyidin (2016) analyzed the language style in ―Fury
movie. Both researchers used theory of Joos (1976)
about Language Style.

7. CONCLUSION In learning English, speaking is one of the most

important skills because speaking plays an important
role in communication. When doing communication, the
speaker needs to adjust the language style that is going
to use when speaking to other interlocutors in various
situation. In the movie there are only 4 language styles
occurred with 30 data in total. The conclusion is not all
of the styles occurred and used in the movie and types
of the style occurs dominantly in the movie is intimate
style which represents 11 data.
8. ADVANTAGES 1. Abstracts are written specifically and representatively
with the contents of the article and are made in the

the research article, namely to describe the language
style used in the film
3. The ideas/issues raised are still fresh because only a
few have done this research but with the same theory.

concisely so that they are easy to understand.

9. DISANVADTAGES 1. Some parts of the article need to be simplified again

or just omitted such as the understanding of language
that appears in several sub-topics repeatedly which
makes the article ineffective and convoluted.

INTRODUCTION
Background Comedy is a male-dominated world as sociolinguistics
theory also mentions that women employ less humour
compared to men. However, female comedians also
appeared on television. In Indonesia, Stand-Up Comedy
Indonesia (SUCI) is a popular stand-up comedy
competition broadcasted by a reputable national network
channel, Kompas TV. Interestingly, numerous young
female stand-up comedians also took part as participants

Data Secondary

Data Analysis The data were analysed using the theory of women's
language and the theory of types and functions of
humour.

DISCUSSION Stand-up comedy is a short comedy performance, so the

average time is five to eight
minutes. Four female stand-up comedians selected in the
first four seasons of SUCI came
from various backgrounds such as Arab-Indonesian,
Chinese-Indonesian, British expatriate,
and Indonesian with Batak ethnicity. The results
obtained found that these four stand-up
comedians used their humour as a safe place to share
their struggles, thoughts, and critics
about stereotypes and identity, sexism, relationship and
gender equality, and body positivity.
In addition, they also employed humour to share
concerns with the audiences who were
facing the same circumstances.
CONCLUSION The four female stand-up comedians in this study used
their ethnic background and sociocultural concerns as
elements of their humour, but the points they expressed
were not pretending to represent their ethnicity but more
personal and universal concerns. From the results of this
study, it can be concluded that these female stand-up
comedians employed humour primarily to show their
identity, solidarity, desire to articulate their aspiration
for gender equality and rejection of stigmatisation.
These women did not stop themselves from using
various humour techniques, even taboo words from the
language used. Their performance, however, was pure
humour without ethnic bias or sentiment. Despite the
results, the study also has some limitations.
ADVANTAGES 1. The title of the article is very interesting because it
raises the issue of the type of language style used when
performed by four female comedian finalists from
different cultural backgrounds such as Arab-Indonesian,
Chinese-Indonesian, British expatriate, and Indonesian
with Batak ethnicity.
2. The purpose of this article is explained very clearly.
3. Discussion and relevant findings
DISANVADTAGES Some parts of the article still need to be condensed and
simplified again.

INTRODUCTION YouTube as online platforms today has created millions of

Background videos with varied, entertaining and useful content for
millions of internet users get. This makes the content
creators compete to make interesting and high quality
videos. This has become a new trend among the younger
generation today. To become a Youtuber or Vlogger with a
large number of subscribers, content creators are required
to be more productive and creative in creating interesting,
unique, and quality content in order to increase the number
of observers and customers. Not only creative in terms of
content, Youtubers must also have good verbal
communication skills in order to convey interesting,
entertaining content and easy to understand.
Formulation of The Problem
How the effect of the variety of Indonesian YouTuber and
Vlogger on young people's language behavior ?
Objectives of The Research
This research is to investigate the effect of the variety of
Indonesian YouTuber and Vlogger on young people's
language behavior.
RESEARCH METODOLOGY
Research Design Descriptive Qualitative Research

Data Secondary

Data Analysis The data was collected from a number of videos uploaded
by Indonesian Youtuber and Vlogger by filtering
representative content. by questionnaires, interviews, and
observations of youth groups to be able to hear firsthand
variety of their languages.

Sample 100 respondents

DISCUSSION The Indonesian Youtubers or Vloger style influences the

language behavior of the younger generation today. The
data was obtained by distributing questionnaires in Goggle
form, with 100 respondents aged between 13-22 years. It is
assumed that this age can be classified as the young
generation (teenagers) who are the target to this study. The
following is a general description of the results of the
questionnaire that has been obtained. The respondents in
this study are young people who are very familiar with the
YouTube platform. Most of them, 41%, spend more than 2
hours a day watching content on YouTube, then 34% watch
YouTube less than 2 hours a day, 25% say they rarely watch
YouTube. Although the tendency to follow the popular style
of YouTube or Vlogger on Youtube is quite high, 47% of
respondents said they disagree whether they say that they
feel more confident and look cool if they use a style of
language like Youtuber, 30% choose mediocre or neutral,
and 23% agreed with the use of YouTube style to increase
their confidence. They tend to use the style of language to
create communication situations that are more familiar and
relaxed, joking, and not monotonous. They are also quite
selective in adopting the language style of the Youtubers,
where they know enough not to imitate or use disrespectful
words and have negative meaning (taboo). So if we
conclude, the language style of Indonesian Youtubers and
Vloggers does not have a significant effect on the language
behavior of the young generation today.

CONCLUSION Today's young generation has become a YouTube platform

users who pretty much spend their time watching video
content from their favorite Youtuber or Vlogger. Most of
today's teens know the jargon and slang words that they
often hear and see on YouTube. These words then often
appear in their conversations especially when talking with
friends to create a relaxed and entertaining communication
atmosphere. However, they do not fully adopt the language
style of the Youtubers, meaning they are quite selective by
not using negative or impolite words. Therefore, not all of
them agree whether the style of YouTube and Vloger have a
positive effect on the development of Indonesian in general.

ADVANTAGES 1. The data and questionnaires are displayed in the form

of a diagram so that the reader can understand the
meaning of the data analyzed by the researcher
2. Not too many quotes are poured into the article so
that the thoughts/ideas expressed by the researcher stand
out more
3. Researchers are able to see gaps that are interesting
enough to be investigated further.
DISANVADTAGES The “INTERFERENCE” section should be deleted
because there are already definitions of code
mixed/switching and bilingualism which have almost
the same understanding, so the presence of interference
in the article is no longer needed.
