Textual Answers: Read the story and answer the following questions.
Tom Sawyer was unhappy to wake up on a Monday morning because it was the
beginning of a new week and he did not want to go to school. He wished to stay at
home.
In order to stay at home, Tom drew his sore toe and held it up for inspection. He
pretended to be in great pain and began groaning loudly so that someone would
hear him.
Aunt Polly began to laugh and cry at the same time after Tom told her that his toe
was mortified. She soon realised that Tom was making an excuse since he did not
want to go to school. Just then, Tom felt foolish and stopped groaning.
a) Do you think Tom did the right thing by pretending to be sick? Justify your
answer.
No, it was not a right thing to do. Tom wished to be sick just so that he could avoid
going to school. He first thought about his tooth which was loose. But he knew that
his aunt would pull out his tooth and then he would be in pain. Thus, he chose to
tell her about his toe. However, she found out that he was making excuses and
simply lying because he did not want to go to school. This had to be stopped since
Tom would not learn the importance of going to school and he would tell lies and
be pretentious in all situations. Thus, it was necessary for him to realise that what
he was doing was completely wrong.
Yes, Aunt Polly is a caring and compassionate person. She is a simple woman who
takes her responsibility for Tom and his brother seriously. While she tries hard to
discipline Tom, she also loves and cares for him. She worries about keeping Tom in
control. She scolds and punishes him for his wrong doings but that does not mean
that she does not care and love for him. She scolds him since she wants him to
walk on the right path.
