1.APGAR SCORING
 APGAR SCORING - standardized evaluation of the newborn.
 It is done at 1 min after birth to determine his general condition of birth and then at 5 mins.
 To determine how well the newborn is adjusting to extra uterine life
 A test developed in 1952 by Dr. Virginia Apgar and an assessment scale used as standard since
1958 (APGAR et.al, 1958)
 Quick assessment of the newborn's overall well-being

Interpretation:
• 0-3 - the baby is in serious condition and needs resuscitation
• 4-6 - baby's condition is guarded and needs oxygen
• 7-10 - baby is healthy

Cry:
Normal-should be strong, lusty cry.
a. A loud insistent cry with drawing up and kicking the legs,
denotes colicky pain.
b. A fretful cry if due to ingestion will be accompanied by
green stools and passing gas.
c. A whining cry is noticeable when the baby is ill and
premature.
d. A fretful, hungry cry with fingers in the mouth and
flexed, tense extremities denotes hunger.
e. A peculiar, shrill, sharp, sounding cry suggests injury.
f. A weak groaning cry or grunt during expiration usually
indicates severe respiratory disturbances.
g. Absent weak or constant cry suggests brain damage.
h. A high pitch, shrill cry maybe a sign of increase

1. SILVERMAN-ANDERSEN SCORE
RESPIRATORY STATUS ONLY
• a system for evaluation of breathing performance of
premature infants.
• It consists of five items: (1) chest retraction as compared
with abdominal retraction during inhalation; (2)
retraction of the lower intercostal muscles; (3) xiphoid
retraction; (4) flaring of the nares with inhalation; and
(5) grunting on exhalation.
• Each of the five factors is graded 0, 1, or 2. The sum of
these factors yields the score. Adequate ventilation is
indicated by a 0, severe respiratory distress is indicated
by a score of 10.
