PROVERBS (PERI BAHASA)

1. DEFENITION
a. A proverb is a simple and concrete saying popularly known and repeated, which express a
truth, based on commonsense or humans’ practical experience.
b. A proverb is a short popular saying that gives advice about how people should behave and
expresses a belief that is generally thought to be true.
c. Proverbs are wise words which are often metaphorical or symbolic and showing some
truth about a situation, a person, or an object.

2. FUNCTIONS/ PURPOSES
a. To comment on a situation.
b. To respond to some events.
c. To deliver moral lessons.
d. To give an advice.
e. To give a warning.

3. GRAMMATICAL STRUCTURE OF PROVERBS


a. Negative Imperative (Kalimat Larangan)
 Don’t count your chicken before they are hatced.
 Never judge a book by it’s cover.
 Don’t flag a dead horse.
 Never look a gift-horse in the mouth.

b. Positive Imperative (Kalimat Perintah)


 Look before you leap.
 When in Rome, do as the Romans do.

c. Parallel Phrase (Frase Setara)


 Out of sight, out of mind.
 Like father like son.
 Garbage in, garbage out.
 Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

d. Declarative Sentence (Kalimat Penyataan)

Pattern:

 S + Verb + Object

Rolling stone gathers no moss

Subject Verb Object

 S + to be + complement (adjectives, adverbs, nouns)

Beauty is in the eye of its beholder.

Subject to be adverb of place

Please choose ten of the following proverbs. Then please:

a. Find Indonesian proverbs that equivalent with it.


b. Decide their structures or patterns.
