PRACTICAL 4
(DESIGN OF 3D POROUS SCAFFOLD DESIGNING USING 3D
MODELLING SOFTWARE)

AIM: To design cubic and orthorhombic scaffolds according to the given dimensions.

SOFTWARE USED: AutoDesk 123D Design

THEORY: Tissue engineering applications commonly encompass the use of

three-dimensional (3D) scaffolds to provide a suitable microenvironment for the
incorporation of cells or growth factors to regenerate damaged tissues or organs. These
scaffolds serve to mimic the actual in vivo microenvironment where cells interact and
behave according to the mechanical cues obtained from the surrounding 3D environment.

The porosity and pore size of 3D scaffolds have direct implications on their functionality
during biomedical applications. Open porous and interconnected networks are essential for
cell nutrition, proliferation, and migration for tissue vascularization as well as the
formation of new tissues.

The scaffolds could be synthesized artificially by the process of 3D Printing. In this process,
the scaffolds must first be designed with the required parameters and then can further be
3D Printed by converting the file .stl format and fed to the 3D printer.

SOLIDWORKS, 123D Design, and Fusion 360 are the commonly used CAD Software. The
part to be designed is first put on paper. The brainstorming for the design i.e. type of design,
the dimensions of models, and feasibility of model are taken into consideration. The design
is then done of specified dimensions using CAD. The assembly of various parts is made as a
result of which the desired part is obtained. Then the sketch i.e. the model is converted to
.stl file format. This file format is used for rapid prototyping and 3D printing.
