1. The Hornbill festival begins with the Naga dancers standing in a row, their tall feathered
head dresses rising high. All the dancers wear red and black costumes and carry long spears.
The Naga war dance then begins with a dramatic drum roll and continues with warrior drums
keeping a beat.

2. The great Indian hornbill is a colourful bird with a huge curved beak and eye-catching
feathers. It has a loud cry and is believed to be a symbol of strength and courage in the folk
culture of Nagaland. The Hornbill Festival is named after this bird because it symbolizes the
essence and true spirit of Nagaland.

3. The harvest festivals that are celebrated by the different tribes of Nagaland are-the Kuki
tribe celebrates the festival called Mimkut, the Konyak tribe celebrates Aolaeng festival and
the Ao tribe celebrates the Moatsu festival.
4. The Hornbill Festival was started in the year 2000 by the government of Nagaland to
encourage amity and understanding among the various tribes.

D. All states of India have their own harvest festivals at different times of the year. Some of
them are Makar Sankranti, Pongal, Bihu, Onam and Poush Parbon. Pongal is the harvest
festival of Tamil people. It is dedicated to the Sun God and is a four day festival. It is usually
celebrated from 14 to 17 January.
