(only look for page/paper/paragraphing layout, direct and indirect voice/quotation structures, in
text-citation, referencing list, but skip diagrams/charts and appendix)
You must cite a minimum of THREE sources and a maximum of SIX sources
Instruction:
1. Brainstorm Ideas. You can brainstorm by writing down everything you think of or know about
the topic in point form, note, or mind-map. (You might not use all the information, but it’ s
helpful to activate your knowledge and get down any ideas you have).
2. Ask yourself “ What is the topic?” Then ask yourself “ what is my
opinion/claim/position/view/think on the topic?” By asking these questions you will be able to
generate your thesis statement
3. Use why? Or how? Or what can be done about it? To deepen the thesis. When you ask these
questions, automatically you will start thinking of the reasons or justifications to prove your
point. Those reasons will become your supporting ideas for development into supporting
details in your body paragraphs.
4. Outline/plan for your essay. (If you don’ t make a plan or an outline, you will find it difficult to
focus on your topic.)
Research Directives:
1. A topic sentence that contains one supporting idea or one main idea or a controlling idea
(Remember, it is always the first sentence in a paragraph, and it should contain the idea)
2. You develop the idea further by providing evidence and reasoning. (This is where you need to
synthesize your notes from your reading.)
3. Your paragraph must end with a transition to the next paragraph.
4. Use signposting and transitional words given to you in the class. Those words will connect your
sentences and your paragraphs, and give a smooth flow to your essay.
