RESEARCH PROPOSAL DEFENSE 2021 INSTRUCTIONS AND GUIDELINES

A. PROPOSAL PAPER

1. Ensure that all chapters in the papers are complete with their necessary sections and have
been written following the guidelines of writing a proposal.
a. INTRODUCTION (unlabeled)
i. Background of the study (Trends & Problems/Purpose)
ii. Review of Related Literature (Issues)
iii. Conceptual Framework (Diagram & Text)
iv. Statement of the Problem & Research Questions
v. Significance of the Study
vi. Scope & Delimitation
vii. Hypothesis (if applicable)
b. METHODS (Labeled, in a separate page)
i. Research Design
ii. Sampling Technique
iii. Respondents
iv. Instrument
v. Data Gathering Procedure
vi. Data Analysis
vii. Ethical Considerations
c. REFERENCES (labeled)
i. Following APA Style of Referencing – 7th Edition
2. Important sections to remember in the Background of the Study:
a. Trends
i. Introduction & definition of concepts (by conceptual literature)
ii. Status/Condition of existing and development of research in the topic
iii. From global perspective/global context to local and specific context
b. Problem and Issues
i. Define/state the problem/s inherent in the topic
ii. Explain why you are interested with the problem
iii. Contextualize in the Philippine setting (from global to local)
iv. Contextualize next in the research locale (in the school)
c. Review of Related Literature
i. Before jumping to the RRL, have an introductory paragraph first
ii. One paragraph is to one main idea/one literature
iii. Each related literature should consist of the what of the study, and who the
researchers who did it (narrative citation style); the
methods/approach/design/instruments, sample size and sampling technique,
salient/significant findings; and implications, if there are.
iv. The last paragraph/s should be a synthesis of all the RRLs (justify here as
well or re-mention as to why and how your proposal will address the gap
found through the RRL)
d. Conceptual Framework and SOP Questions
i. Be consistent with the names of the variables you mention in the SOP
Questions and in the Conceptual Framework
ii. What is found in the Framework, should also be what is found in the SOP
Questions; and vice versa
iii. The Conceptual Framework section should define the specific variables
used in the study, as well as other concepts inherent in the paper (specific
or exact concepts as they appear in the SOPQs, and in the key parts of the
paper, like the title)
3. Important sections to remember in the Methods:
a. In all sections under Methods, follow the pattern of paragraph development, state-
define-contextualize.
b. Be sure to cite authorities properly as you define terms.
c. In thinking about the Respondents and Sampling Technique, consider who your
target respondents are; whether they require qualifications or criteria, or they may
be selected randomly. Align the Sampling Technique to be used with the nature
of respondents and the target manner of selection.
d. In thinking about the Data Analysis, think back from your lessons in Statistics and
Probability, and on Variables.
e. In writing the Data Gathering Procedure, narrate the steps you will undertake to
collect the data you need, starting from asking necessary permissions, orienting or
informing the respondents, administering the questionnaires (and in what form),
etc.
f. In writing the Ethical Considerations, include the use of Informed Consent
Forms; that Informed Consent Forms will be administered to the respondents, as
they are still minors. Include or mention also how you may protect their private
information, and how you may practice ethics of research (think back to this
lesson to remember) in handling their data.
g. For others not covered here, look back on the sample papers (either full-blown or
the proposals) in the repository for reference.
4. Do a grammar and spelling check. Check for typographical and grammatical errors in
the whole of the paper. For Methodology and Statement of the Problem, use the simple
future verb tense (e.g., “will” + base verb).
5. Double-check the format of the paper (spacing, margins, etc.) to ensure that it follows
the format prescribed in class.
6. The final product should be in PDF Format, uploaded in a Drive Folder link to be given
to you by the instructor.
7. BEFORE the Defense, make sure to prepare a PowerPoint presentation. Follow these
guidelines:
a. 7-10 slides (or less, if possible) containing the following:
i. Slide 0 – Title of the Proposed Study, Names of Members, Group Number,
Name of Teacher/Instructor
ii. Slide 1 – Background of the Study (In three to four bullets, mention the
most significant or salient paragraphs that summarizes the “Trend” portion
of the paper.)
iii. Slide 2 – Review of Related Literature (Cite only the most significant
Related Literature that supports your study proposal, around 3-4 bullets)
iv. Slide 3 – Conceptual Framework
v. Slide 4 – Statement of the Problem
vi. Slide 5 – Significance of the Study, and Scope and Delimitation
vii. Slide 6 – Hypothesis (if applicable)
viii. Slide 7 – Methodology
b. Only 1-2 members are allowed to present. Each group should have a timekeeper.
The presentation should only last a maximum of five (5) minutes. Practice the
whole process and time yourself. Edit the presentation, if necessary, to maximize
the time you have.
c. Panelists will give their comments, suggestions, or questions after each
presentation. Groups should have each their own note-takers. Google MEET
Records will not be given afterwards readily unless evidence of notetaking are
presented.

B. PRESENTATION/DEFENSE PROPER

1. ON THE DAY OF THE DEFENSE, all members of the research team must be in
BUSINESS ATTIRE (or equivalent), must study and be prepared to answer the
questions that the panel members will be asking. Assign a member to take note of the
suggestions or record the session. Also, assign a member to control the presentation.
2. DURING the defense, everyone must turn on their cameras, and ensure that their
audios are working. Everyone must ensure a good background and setup as well. Observe
proper NETIQUETTES.
3. Upon entering the room acknowledge the panel with a simple greeting. Smile. The panel
is not there to just point out your mistakes but to help you.
4. Start the presentation immediately. Introduce the members of the group and proceed with
the presentation. When you are done, tell the panel that the presentation has ended and
that your group is ready to answer their questions and listen to their comments. Thank
the panel for their help as they finish their comments and leave the presentation room
immediately.
5. Keep track of time. Keep in mind that you only have a limited period of time to present.
Stay on-cam even during the time of the panelists giving their suggestions or asking their
questions. Be ready to speak or answer any time. Do not wait for each other to talk,
especially when a panelist is waiting for a response.
6. DO NOT RELY ON THE MEET RECORDING. TAKE NOTE OF WHAT WERE
ASKED OF, AND WHAT WERE RECOMMENDED. The MEET Recordings will
only be given after your group presents evidence that you have indeed taken notes while
the panel was ongoing. This is important to ensure everyone is attentive during the
defense.
7. Absenteeism without prior notice and/or valid excuse will not be tolerated.

C. POST-PRESENTATION/AFTER-DEFENSE

1. After your presentation, and after taking all the recommendations of the panel, proceed
immediately in revising and editing your papers accordingly.
2. Do not let more than a week to pass by without going back and working on the editions
of your paper, as this may lead you to forget the comments and suggestions.
3. Once done incorporating all corrections necessary, save your file as a new document;
rename by indicating “Post-Defense_Revised v1_ (title of your paper/keywords)
_Group number_Section. Upload in a drive folder link to be provided.
4. Wait for further instructions from your research adviser/teacher.
