New Americans
At the end of the 19th century, thousands of people left Europe to go to the USA. They
went to find jobs and new opportunities in the new world. First there were Irish and German
migrants, then Italians and East Europeans. Between 1890 and 1920, about 18 million people
arrived in the USA.
Most of these migrants came with very little money. Some went to the country and
worked on small farms, but usually they lived in the cities because it was easy to find jobs
there. Some people found the new life difficult and returned to their country. But most of them
were determined to stay in the USA.
Life was hard. Americans did not like immigrants. Families lived in small apartments in
crowded buildings. Women often worked at home, making clothes for very little pay. A lot of
the men worked as manual workers: they made railways, bridges and roads. They worked
hard and they sometimes sent money back to their families in their country.
Gradually, they became prosperous in their new home. Families started shops,
restaurants and other businesses. European migrants also were also great musicians and
they worked in a new industry: film-making. They became famous in business, sports and
politics. By the 1960s, President John F. Kennedy could say. 'Everywhere immigrants have
enriched and strengthened the fabric of American life.'
