CHAIN LINK FENCES AND GATES

PART 1 GENERAL

1.1 SECTION INCLUDES

A. Fence framework, fabric, and accessories.

B. Excavation for post bases and concrete foundations for posts.

C. Concrete anchorage for posts.

D. Intercom system for motorized gate.

E. Motorized Gate Operators

1.2 SUBMITTALS

A. Shop Drawings: Indicate plan layout, spacing of components, post foundation


dimensions, hardware anchorage, and schedule of components.

B. Product Data: Provide data on fabric, posts, accessories, fittings and hardware.

C. Samples: Submit two samples of fence fabric, 12 inches x 12 inches in size illustrating
construction and finish if requested by the Engineer.

D. Manufacturer's Installation Instructions: Indicate installation requirements, post


foundation requirements.

E. Shall include an equipment list, data sheet(s), system description, block diagrams on
equipment to be furnished and electrical wiring diagrams for installation.

F. A written statement from the Contractor and System Integrator that they coordinated
to insure proper operation of automated gates.

B. Manufacturer: Company specializing in commercial quality chain link fencing with


minimum 3 years experience.

C. Perform work complying with provisions of ASTM F567, and as specified in this section.

D. Vehicular Slide Gate Operator shall be in compliance with Underwriter Laboratories Inc.
(UL) Standard for Safety - Door, Drapery, Gate, Louver and Window Operators and
Systems, UL 325 Fourth Edition; and Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) Standard for
Safety - Tests for Safety-Related Controls Employing Solid-State Devices, UL 991 Second
Edition.

E. Vehicular Slide Gate Operator shall be tested for compliance to UL 325 and UL 991 and
shall be LISTED by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL).

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.1 MANUFACTURERS

A. Subject to compliance with the specified requirements, provide products by one of the
following manufacturers or equal.

1. Stephens Pipe & Steel, LLC.

2. Master-Halco.

3. Merchants Metals a Division of MMI Products, Inc.

4. Gate Operator shall be Door King Model 9150.

5. Intercom System shall be Aiphone Corporation Model LEM-1DLS.

2.2 MATERIALS

A. All chain link fabric, posts, accessories, fittings, and hardware products shall be of new
materials.

2.3 CHAIN LINK FENCE

A. Fabric:

1. The chain link fabric shall conform to Federal Specificaiton RR F 191/1D. The
chain link fabric shall be Type 1. The fabric shall be 11 gauge core wire, woven in
a 2-in mesh and be hot dipped galvanized after weaving, and be in accordance
with ASTM A392. The height of fabric shall be 84-in. Top and bottom selvages
shall have a twisted barbed finish, barbs to be formed by cutting wire on a bias.
Fabric shall be fastened to intermediate posts with No. 6 aluminum fabric wire
spaced approximately 15 in apart and to top rail with 9 gauge wires spaced
approximately 18-in apart. The fabric shall be securely fastened to all terminal
and gate posts with ¼-in. by ¾-in stretcher bars with No. 11 gauge pressed steel
bands spaced approximately 12-in apart. Stretcher bars for security fencing shall
be 3/8-in by 3/16-in. All bands, wires and tension bars shall conform to Federal
Specification RR F 191/4D.

B. Bottom Tension Wire: 6 gage (.192 inch diameter), attached to fence fabric with hog
rings at 24 inches on center. Tension wire and hog rings: Finish shall match fabric.

C. Posts, top rails, braces, and gate frames: Schedule 40, type E or S, grade B galvanized
pipe per ASTM A53, sizes as follows:

1. Line Posts (maximum spacing 10 feet), End or Corner Posts (Braces to be


provided at both) as listed in the table below:

2. Gate Posts: As scheduled below (see 2.2.E).

3. Top Rails: 1-1/4 inch nominal diameter (1-5/8 inch O.D. - 2.27 lbs/foot).

4. Mid Rails: 1-1/4 inch nominal diameter (1-5/8 inch O.D. - 2.27 lbs/foot).

5. Bottom Rails: 1-1/4 inch nominal diameter (1-5/8 inch O.D. - 2.27 lbs/foot).

6. Braces: 1-1/4 inch nominal diameter (1-5/8 inch O.D. - 2.27 lbs/foot).

D. Gate Frames: ASTM F900, for fabrication only, use 1-1/2 inch nominal, 1-7/8 inch O.D.
schedule 40 galvanized pipe with welded corner connections and welded diagonal 1-1/4
inch nominal diameter (1-5/8 inch O.D.) pipe bracing. Paint all welds with galvanic
paint, 2 coats.

E. Gate Posts for swing gates:

1. Use pipes of nominal sizes as listed on table below for each fence height and
gate leaf width:

Fence Gate leaf width: Gate post (Schedule 40, type E or S,


height grade B galvanized pipe - ASTM A53):
8 ft up to 6ft wide (inclusive) 4" nominal diameter (4 1/2" O.D.)
8 ft over 6ft to 18ft wide (inclusive) 6" nominal diameter (6 5/8" O.D.)

F. Fabric Connections:

1. Securely fasten fabric to all terminal posts with 3/16 inch x 5/8-inch tension bars
and beveled edge 11-gage tension bands.

2. Number of tension bands: One band less than the height of the fabric in feet for
each tension bar.

3. Fasten all fabric to intermediate posts with vinyl coated 9-gage galvanized wires
not to exceed 12 inches apart. Fasten tie wire to fence fabric with 1-1/2 inch
full turns minimum.

4. Tie fabric to top rail with 9-gage galvanized wire not to exceed 24 inches apart.
Fasten tie wires to fabric with 1-1/2 inch full turns minimum.

5. Fasten bottom edge of fabric to bottom tension wire using hog rings at intervals
not to exceed 24 inches on center.

6. Aluminum ties are not acceptable.

G. Braces:

1. Securely fastened to posts by 11 gage pressed steel beveled bands and


malleable fittings, then securely trussed from the line post to base of terminal
post with a 3/8 inch truss rod and tightener.

2. Braces are required only in heights of 6 feet and higher.

3. Brace pipe: the same as top rail and installed midway between the top rail and
the ground and extend from the terminal post to the first adjacent line post.

4. Truss bracing: Provided in panels adjoining all end, corner and gate posts.

H. Intermediate Post Tops: Malleable iron with no points on top.

I. Hinges: Malleable Iron, hot dipped galvanized:

1. Heavy 90 degrees Industrial Box Hinge, with 180 degree offset adaptor.

J. Latches: Malleable Iron, hot dipped galvanized

1. Industrial Fork Latch combined with back latch attached.

K. Gate Holdbacks w/ Duck Bill: One per each gate leaf.

L. Fence and Gate Height: As shown on drawing. Gates to be same height as fence.

2.4 CONCRETE FOR POST SETTING:

A. ASTM C94; normal Portland cement, 3,000 psi strength at 28 days, 4 inch slump.

2.5 MOTOR OPERATED GATES

A. Gates shown as motor operated shall be provided with required motor for gate size,
frame and tract, and all required appurtenances for operation including roller
mechanism. As part of the Work, Contractor shall make any grading changes required to
accommodate tract and/or operating mechanism.

B. Slide Gate Operator:

1. The slide gate operator shall use a microprocessor based solid-state control
board that controls all functions of the slide gate operator. Operator shall be
rated for continuous duty for use in industrial applications.

2. Primary reduction system shall employ an adjustable clutch and power transfer
shall be provided by single cog belt drive train.

3. Operator shall employ magnetic sensing to set open and close limit adjustment.
4. Operator shall automatically set both open and close limit adjustments upon
power-up and activation in the open direction. Operator shall automatically
sense for any gate coasting to insure true limit settings.

5. Pulling medium shall provide a positive mechanical connection to the gate


system. Friction driven rail type pulling mediums shall not be allowed. Roller
chain pulling medium shall be minimum size #40.

6. A positive dead bolt shall activate only when the gate is forced open, to reduce
solenoid lock wear and failure.

7. Operator shall be capable of being mounted at the front, center or rear of the
gate system, shall be designed for either left or right hand mount and shall be
designed for pad or post mounting.

8. Operator frame shall use 12-gauge G90 galvanized steel to avoid rusting and
shall be painted charcoal gray.

9. Operator shall have two 115 VAC convenience outlets available for accessory
transformer power and shall have a built-in lockable power disconnect and reset
switch.

10. Operator shall be powered from 480-volt, 3-phase. Provide required control
power transformers for access control, intercom and safety systems.

C. Control Circuit:

1. Control board shall have connections for optional Gate Tracker board. Gate
tracker shall record operator cycles (x100), input errors, loop detector errors,
obstruction hits, and power up events. Record shall be time and date stamped.

2. Control board shall allow a stop or a stop and reverse function (settable) from a
safety related input.

3. Control board shall have two ports for plug in of vehicular loop detectors.

4. A dry set of relay contacts shall be available for external use, and shall have four
programmable functions.

5. A special input shall allow the gate to be partially opened.

6. A timer override function shall cause an opening gate to stop and then reverse
direction when the reverse loop(s) or reverse input is clear even if the gate has
not reached the full open position, to help reduce tailgating.

7. Control board shall have separate inputs for external contact and non-contact
entrapment protection devices.

8. Functions will be user programmable by DIP-switches located on the control


board.

D. Fail-Safe Operation

1. To prioritize safety over security, operator shall assume a fail-safe mode in the
event of a power loss or if an entrapment is sensed (entrapment alarm
activated).

a. Operator shall revert to a fail-safe mode allowing the gate to be pushed


open without any special knowledge or use of any special cranks, keys
or other devices.

1. Non-contact sensors, or contact sensors, or combination thereof, shall be


utilized to prevent persons from becoming entrapped in the gate system.

2. Warning signs shall be installed in accordance with manufacturer's installation


instructions and UL 325 guidelines.

F. Electronic Reverse

1. The vehicular gate operator shall be equipped with an inherent electronic


obstruction sensing system. The electronic sensing system shall automatically
cause the gate operator to stop and reverse if an obstruction is sensed during
the open or close cycle.

2. For enhanced safety, the control circuit shall check the obstruction sensing
system circuit prior to the start of each cycle of operation. Should the control
circuit detect a fault in the obstruction sensing system, the motor shall not be
allowed to start.

G. Provide the following for the gate operator:

1. Vehicle ground loop and detector to allow free egress from the secured side.

2. Two reversing ground loops one inside and one on the outside with associated
detector to detect vehicles and prevent the gate from closing.

3. Non-contacting photo-beams for entrapment protection.

4. Fire department lock box that accepts a standard padlock and Fire Department
pad lock. The gate shall automatically open when a lock is removed and door is
open and shall hold the gate open until the door is closed and and the lock is
replaced. Box shall be painted red and have operating instructions printed
inside of the box.

5. Access Control and Intercom System:

a. Provide gooseneck mounted access control keypad and intercom


system. System shall include a call button for the intercom system.
Locate where accessible by driver of tractor trailer truck.

b. Gooseneck shall provide offset from the road surface.

c. Keypad shall be vandal resistant with stainless faceplate and shall


include a light for the keypad.

d. Access control system shall be capable of storing up to 1000, 4 digit


codes.

e. Intercom system shall be Aiphone Access Sentry Set with a master and
remote unit. Intercom system shall allow for gate opening from the
master unit. Master unit shall be designed for desk mounting and
provided with all required power supplies for operation from 120Vac.
Master unit shall be provided with a talk button and remote unit shall
provide for hands free communication. Master units shall be provided
with volume controls for incoming call tone and voice communication.
Provide cabling between the master and remote stations for
communication and gate control. Cabling shall meet the manufacturer’s
requirements based upon the distance between the remote and master
unit.

f. Access control and intercom system shall be powered from the gate
operator. Provide all required cabling and interfaces between the gate
operator, access control system, and intercom system for proper
operation.

H. A complete operational system shall be provided.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.1 INSTALLATION

A. Post Installation:

1. Provide posts for fencing along lines indicated. Space posts evenly, maximum
10 feet on center, carefully aligned and plumb in every direction.

2. Post Setting: Extend post to six inches from foundation bottom. Extend
foundation to 2 inch below finish grade. Trowel crown and slope foundation
away from post.

3. Coordinate with Project Consultant concerning any obstacles or obstructions in


line of fencing.

4. At foundations that will be located under a concrete slab, provide sleeves for
future fence foundations, if fence will be installed after the concrete slab.

B. Adjust hardware for smooth operation and lubricate where necessary.

C. Foundation Size

1. Concrete foundation size for line or terminal posts shall comply with the
following table based on fence height:

D. Top and Bottom Rail:

1. Provide continuous top rail through line posts.

2. Rigidly connect top rail to all end, corner, and gate posts.

3. Level site: Install top rail level. Varying ground slopes: Install top rail with
continuous even gradient from corner to corner. Roller coaster installation:
Not permitted.

4. Provide bottom rail at bus barriers.

E. Mid Rail:

1. At 8 feet high and over fences provide mid rails.

F. Chain Link Fabric:

1. Install with fabric top flush to top rail with bottom of fabric 1 inch (+/- 1/2
inches) above finished grade.

2. Stretch fabric tightly to eliminate sags and buckles.

3. Refer to paragraph 2.2 above for fabric fastening.

G. Gates:

1. Fabricate and install gates to prevent sagging conditions.

2. Install gates square, level, and plumb.

3. Install ground-set items in concrete for anchorage.

4. Permanently fasten hasp and staple combination for locking gates and hold
open feature in place.

H. Bottom Tension Wire

1. Install bottom tension wire and mechanically tension for very tight installation.

2. Use tension bands for attachment of tension wire to end and corner posts at
each straight run of fence.

I. Gate Operator

1. Shall be installed by qualified technicians who have been factory trained and
certified.

2. Operator shall be pad mounted directly to a concrete pad, firmly secured,


plumb and level.

3. Wiring shall be uniform and in accordance with national electric codes and
manufacturer’s instructions.

4. All splices shall be in easily accessible junction boxes or on terminal boards.

5. All cable runs in all junction boxes shall be tagged and identified.

6. Install ground loops and safety devices per manufacturer’s recommendations.

7. Coordinate all work with other effected trades and contractors.

8. System shall be turned on and adjustment made to meet requirements of


specifications and on-site conditions.

9. System shall function as specified.

10. System shall be completely tested to assure that all components and accessories
are hooked-up and in working order.

3.2 TRAINING

A. Installing contractor shall conduct up to (1) hour of instruction in use and operation of
the system to designated owner representatives.

B. Installation contractor shall conduct up to (1) hour of technical training, in


troubleshooting and service of the system, to designated owner representatives.
