Scanner
1250 0210 90

The scanner itself is a laser distance meter which measures the distance from the
scanner head to a fixed point. This can be used to scan a rectangular area or a whole
tunnel profile using the methods offered by the system. It is also possible to control
the scanner manually using the control lever and to measure the distance to individual
points in order to record rock bolts or extrusions in the rock.

The scanner emits two beams, a measuring beam which is invisible and an aiming
beam which appears as a red dot when it hits a fixed object. The distance between the
beams is 3 cm. This is important to consider for achieving maximum accuracy.

The scanner copes with distances up to 40 metres (on rock), but for practical reasons
the common practice is to scan the most recent face while drilling is in progress.

1. Overview

Control mode
The control lever is used control the scanner head in order to aim with the laser. The
control works in two different ways, depending on which menu is accessed in the
Profiler's display. The two different control modes are called Direct and Sphere .

Control mode Direct means that the laser is controlled by means of the scanner's
two axes directly corresponding to the control lever's two axes. The control lever is
then used to manoeuvre the scanner head by operating the scanner axes separately.

The second control mode, Sphere means that the scanner axes interact so that the
control lever's axes correspond to the laser moving along the tunnel's longitudinal
direction and along the tunnel's contour.

In several menus there is the option to change the control mode using buttons that are
marked Direct or Sphere .

Control lever buttons

The yellow illuminated button on the lever box has the same function as the button
that currently has a blue border on the display screen. This button means that you
avoid jumping too much between controlling from the lever box and controlling from
the screen.

The function of the button that is located on top of the control lever is to switch
between high and low speed for manual control.

Control lever display

The function most often shown in the control lever box's display is the distance from
the centre of the scanner axis to the laser pointer's point of impact.

During navigation the display shows the text that describes the next steps to be per-
formed.

During scanning the display shows the following information:

• The distance from the centre of the scanner axis to the laser pointer's point of
impact.
• Distance deviation from theoretical contour
- Negative value means inside the theoretical contour, and positive value outside.
• Section No. that the laser hits.
• Points in log
- Auto scanned or manually logged points.

All buttons have an F and a number, e.g. F10 . If you want to use the keyboard then
this corresponds to the function keys. Some buttons have no equivalent on the key-
board, e.g. F21 . Instead you have to press the key for the first figure ( 2 ) and then
the function key for the second figure ( F1 ).

Certain buttons appear in almost all menus and have the same function everywhere
they appear.

If a button is marked with a blue border, it means that this is the next logical step. The
yellow lamp button on the lever box has the same function as the button that cur-
rently has a blue border on the display screen.

1. Overview

Rotate
In several menus there is a button for the Turn function (F22). When this button is
depressed the scanner repositions so that the scanner head changes position but the
aiming beam nevertheless still aims at the same point.

This can be useful if you are in a position where it is not possible to reach with the
aiming beam from a certain distance. The scanner then repositions in order to attempt
to reach from the opposite direction.

Starting the system

1250 0205 92

Figure: Connection box

Start the profiler system by turning the switch on the connection box to position 1.
During start-up the scanner head moves automatically from park position so that it
instead points straight up.

For all of the functions of the Profiler to be activated, the rig control system (RCS)
must also be switched on. For this reason, start this too if it is not already running.

Safety

WARNING
• Laser beam.
• Danger of injury to the eyes.
• Do not look into the beam.
• Do not put optical instruments in the way
of the beam.

Introduction
In order to be able to use the scanning function, the Profiler system must have access
to geometry data (tunnel line). Geometry data is loaded via the rig's control system
(RCS).

In addition, the rig must be navigated. The rig can be navigated via its control system
or by means of using the profiler system.

Check in the start menu status box whether the following lines are pre-ticked.

• Geometry data (= tunnel line is loaded)

• Navigated (= rig is navigated)

If these lines are pre-ticked then scanning can begin.

Settings

Figure: Menu S01.1.1

In this menu you can make different settings which affect the scanning.

• Stick . Here you can change the behaviour of the control lever. With Direct
mode selected you can control both scanner axes independently of each other.
• Full profile . These settings are only valid if you select to scan with the Full
profile method.
- The value at Depth (m) indicates the length of tunnel section to be scanned.
- The value at In left side (m) determines how far down against the floor the
scanning should take place on the left-hand side of the tunnel. If, for example,
you want to start scanning one metre up on the tunnel wall, then enter the value
-1.000. Note that this must be a negative value.
- In right side (m) has the same function as above but for the tunnel's right-
hand wall.
• Logging . These settings determine the accuracy of the scanning/logging.

- Point distance tunnel (m) indicates the distance between logged points in
the tunnel's longitudinal direction.
- Point distance contour (m) indicates the distance between logged points
along the tunnel's contour.
- Max distance inside (m) is a limit for the logging. Points lying longer
inside the contour than this limit are not included in the log. In this way you
avoid having uninteresting measurement points from e.g. booms and other
equipment on the rig.
• Square . These settings only apply if the Square scanning method has been
selected.
- Min depth (m) and Min width (m) state the length of the rectangle's sides,
i.e. how large an area shall be scanned.
• Scanning . Here you can select whether the scanner should move in the longitudi-
nal direction of the tunnel or at right-angles to the longitudinal direction, i.e. along
the tunnel's contour. Select between the following three alternatives:
- Along tunnel
- Along contour
- Along tunnel opposite

Scanning speed
During scanning the laser always moves at the same speed on the rock. Depending on
the scanning method used, either point distance along the tunnel or point distance
along the contour affects how long the scanning takes.

13
Operator’s instructions
2. Scanning

Scanning methods Along tunnel and Along tunnel opposite influence the time
required for scanning the distance specified for Point distance contour (m) . The
shorter the distance the longer the scanning takes because the scanner has to measure
more “rows”.

Scanning method Along contour influences the time required for scanning the dis-
tance specified for Point distance tunnel (m) . The shorter the distance the
longer the scanning takes because the scanner has to measure more “rotations”.

Note
Scanning along the tunnel's contour is usually slower than scanning in the longitudi-
nal direction of the tunnel.

F8: Stop scanning Stop scanning. Can be used to stop scanning should the scanner
meet an object, e.g. a boom.
F9: Contd. scanning Continue scanning. Continues to scan at the same point as where
scanning was stopped.
F15: Delete
F16: Direct Selection of lever mode
F17: From - To Selection of the From - To method
F18: Point type Selection of point type.

There are four different methods for scanning:

• From - To
With the From - To method the whole tunnel profile is scanned from any chosen
start section to any chosen finish section.
• Square
The Square method involves scanning within a limited rectangular area around the
point the scanner is aiming at. The preset size of the rectangle is 1 X 1 metre, but
these values can be changed to any size.
• Full profile
Full profile involves scanning the whole tunnel profile, normally five metres in the
tunnel's longitudinal direction.
• Manual scanning
Manual scanning involves aiming at individual points using the lever on the con-
trol box. The method can, for example, be used to record rock bolts or extrusions.

From - To
The From - To method works, in principle, in the same way as the Full profile
method, i.e. the whole tunnel profile is scanned. If you have specified that scanning
shall not take place right down to the floor (in menu S01.1.1) then this also applies
when scanning with the From - To method.

The difference between both methods applies to scanning in terms of depth. With the
Full profile method you aim at a starting point and the Profiler then scans an adjusta-
ble distance backwards from this point. With the From - To method you instead spec-
ify between which two tunnel sections the Profiler shall scan.

1. Check the settings for Full profile in the Settings menu S01.1.1 and adjust these if
necessary. See also the Settings section.

2. Start by setting between which tunnel sections the scanning should take place.
Press From - To (F17) in menu A02. Then menu A02.1 is shown instead.

Square
1. Check in the Settings menu S01.1.1 which measurement it is that is set for the
sides of the rectangle and adjust these if necessary. See also the Settings section .

2. Operate the scanner head with the control lever so that the aiming beam is in the
centre of the area to be scanned.

3. Select the Rectangle scanning method (F4) in menu A02.

4. If a different size for the square than the one listed in the menu S01.1.1 is required,
then it can now be changed. In this case, operate the laser diagonally, from the
point which has been designated as the centre of the square, to a point you want to
act as a corner of the square. Then press Rectangle again.

5. Start scanning by pressing Start autoscan (F7) in menu A02.

Full profile
1. Check the settings for Full profile in the Settings menu S01.1.1 and adjust these if
necessary. See also the Settings section.

2. Select Full scan (F5) in menu A02.

3. Start scanning by pressing Start autoscan (F7).

Manual scanning
1. Select Manual scan (F6).

2. If required, select another type of point at Point type in menu A02. See also the
Define point types section.

3. Move the scanner's aiming beam to the point to be recorded (e.g. a rock bolt or an
extrusion in the rock) using the control lever. Press the button on the top of the
lever to record the point.

Introduction
In order that you can use the scanning function the rig must be navigated. Navigation
can be carried out using the method offered via the RCS system (Laser line) or using
the profiler equipment.

If you want to navigate using the Profiler equipment then the Profile scanner
option must be selected in the navigation menu in the rig's control system. The Pro-
filer must also have had access to geometry data, i.e. tunnel line, and access to data
for navigation, i.e. laser line and/or fixed points. See the File transfer RCS - Profiler
section

Navigation with the profiler equipment can be carried out in accordance with three
different methods:

• Laser
• Two fixed points
• Fixed point and laser hit

• Technically the maximum distance (L1) between the scanner and a navigation
point is approx. 100 metres, but is usually limited by practical circumstances.
• In order that navigation should be as accurate as possible the navigation points
(fixed point or laser hit) should not be located too close to each other. The recom-
mended distance between the points is approx. 30 metres.
• The distance between the navigation points (L3) should always be greater than the
distance between the scanner and the closest of the points (L2).
• If the points are on different sides of the tunnel then it is important that the dis-
tance between the points in the tunnel's longitudinal direction are greater than the
width of the tunnel.

File transfer RCS - Profiler

Irrespective of the type of navigation method selected, certain data files must be
available to the Profiler. There must always be a tunnel line file. There must be a
laser line file and fixed point file in relevant cases, i.e. when navigation with laser
requires a laser line file etc.

For a more detailed description of how the files are loaded into the RCS system and
transferred to the Profiler, see the rig's Operator's Guide .

1. First select the Profile scanner navigation alternative in the RCS system.

2. Load a tunnel line into the RCS system with the Read tunnel line function. You
can select whether to load the file from a PC card (DISP) or from the CCI unit
(CCI).

3. Then load a laser file in the same way with the Read laser line function, and/or
a fixed point file with the Read fixed points function.

4. In this situation the files have only been loaded into the RCS system. Selecting
Navigate rig in the RCS system's navigation menu also allows the Profiler
access to them.

Navigation with laser

Figure: Menu B04

Navigation with laser involves using a tunnel laser with a point of impact on the tun-
nel face, and a sight plate positioned so that the laser runs through the hole in the cen-
tre of the plate. You also have to specify the section number for one of these points.

1. Select the Profiler - Laser navigation method at (F4) in the menu B02. Con-
firm the selection by pressing Apply (F12).

2. Enter the section number for the tunnel face or the sight plate at Peg (F5). Then
confirm with Apply (F12).
If it is the section number for the tunnel face then select Forward at Peg value
fwd/bwd (F7).

If it is the section number for the sight plate then instead select Backward at (F7).

Finish by confirming with Apply (F12).

3. If there are several laser files loaded then you can select which of these should be
used for navigation. Go to menu BC03 by pressing Next (F1).

Select laser at Active laser (F6). Confirm by pressing Apply (F12) and then
proceed to menu B04 by pressing Next (F1).

4. Operate the scanner manually with the control lever so that the aiming beam
shines onto the tunnel laser's point of impact on the tunnel face. Press the yellow
button on the control lever box so that the Profiler records the distance to the point
of impact.

If you have previously carried out a navigation on the location in question then
you can instead press Go to fwd ref. (F4). The scanner then moves automati-
cally to the intended point of impact, i.e. as it was at the previous navigation. Fol-
lowing which, you can fine-tune the aiming beam with the control lever and then
press the lever button.

Finish by pressing Accept fwd ref. (F5).

5. Also identify the tunnel laser's point of impact on the sight plate with the scanner.
Either by full manual operation with the control lever or by first pressing Go bwd
ref. (F6) and then fine tuning using the control lever. When the aiming beam hits
the laser's point of impact on the sight plate, press the yellow button on the control
lever box so that the distance is recorded by the Profiler.

Finish by pressing Accept bwd ref. (F7).

6. When the Profiler has recorded the distance to the two points, the scanner aligns
itself in calculation position, horizontally with the rig, where the scanner position
and the rig position in relation to the tunnel line are calculated.

A new box will open where calculation progress is indicated. Allow this to finish
and do not press OK or Cancel .

Navigation with two fixed points

Figure: Menu D04

Navigation with two fixed points means that there must be two points in the tunnel
that are defined in the tunnel's coordinate system. These points must be marked with
the two navigation plates that are supplied with the Atlas Copco Tunnel Profiler.

Usually the scanned fixed points file contains a list of several defined fixed points,
and then the points required for use with navigation are selected from these.

1. Select the Profiler - Two fixed points navigation method at (F4) in menu
B02. Confirm with Apply (F12).

2. Enter the section number for the tunnel face. Confirm with Apply (F12).

3. Proceed to menu D04 by pressing Next (F1).

4. The fixed point file that was loaded via the RCS system probably contains several
defined fixed points. Select which of these should be the front fixed point at Fixed

Checking the navigation

Figure: Menu A03.1

For additional accuracy you can carry out a check of the navigation. To do this you
need to have access to a check point, i.e. a point defined in the tunnel's coordinate
system, but one which has not been used for the navigation itself.

1. Select check point at Control position (F4) in menu A03.1.

2. Operate the scanner manually with the control lever so that the aiming beam
shines on the check point. Press the button on the top of the lever in order to record
the check point.

If you have previously used the check point for checking navigation then you can
instead press Go to control pos. (F5). The scanner then moves automatically
to the intended point. Following which, you can fine-tune the aiming beam with
the control lever and then press the lever button.
Finish by pressing Accept (F6).

3. Read the deviation at Control position deviation .
