1.2.1 System overview

The Epiroc Tunnel Profiler can be used to:
• Scan a tunnel profile for evaluation compared with a theoretic profile
• Register individual parts of the tunnel, e.g. rock bolts or nodules
• Navigate the rig
The equipment comprises four main parts as shown in the following figure.

1.2.2 Scanner

The scanner itself is a laser distance meter that measures the distance from the scanner
head to a fixed point. This can be used to scan a rectangular area or a whole tunnel profile
using the methods the system has to offer. It is also possible to operate the scanner manu-
ally with the control lever and measure the distance to individual points in order to register
rock bolts or nodules in the rock.
The scanner transmits two beams, a measuring beam that is invisible and a pointer beam
that appears as a red dot when it hits a fixed object. The distance between the beams is 3
cm. It is essential this is taken into account in order to attain the best possible accuracy.
The scanner can handle distances of up to 40 metres (on rock) but for practical reasons,
the latest round is usually scanned at the same time as drilling takes place.

Control
The control lever is used to steer the scanner head to point the laser. The control works in
two ways depending on which menu is active on the profiler display. The two different
methods of control are called Direct and Sphere.
The Direct control method means the laser is controlled with the two scanner axes directly
corresponding to the two control lever axes. The control levers are then used to control the
scanner head by operating the scanner axes individually.
The second method of control, Sphere, means the scanner axes interact so that the con-
trol lever axes correspond to the laser moving in the longitudinal direction of the tunnel and
the tunnel contour respectively.
You can change method of control in several menus using the buttons marked Direct or
Sphere.

Control lever buttons

The button with the yellow light on the lever box has the same function as the button that
just now is framed in blue on the display. This button means there is no need to jump too
much between operating from the lever box and operating from the screen.
The button over the control lever is used to switch between high and low speed for manual
control.

Control lever display

The information most often shown on the control lever box display is the distance from the
scanner axis to the pointer laser's point of contact.
When navigating, the display shows a description of the next step to be carried out.
When scanning, the display shows the following information:
• The distance from the centre of the scanner axis to the pointer laser's point of contact
• Distance deviation from theoretic contour
– A negative value means inside the theoretical contour and a positive value
outside.
• Section number the laser hits.
• Points in log
– Autoscanned or manually logged points.

1.2.4 Touch screen buttons

Computer with touch screen

All the buttons have an F and a number, e.g. F10. If you want to use the keyboard, this will
correspond to the function keys. Some of the buttons do not have their equivalents on the
keyboard, e.g. F21. You will then have to press the key for the first number ( 2) and then
the function key for the second number ( F1).
Some buttons are present on nearly all menus and they have the same function wherever
they appear.
If a button is marked with a blue frame, it means that this is the next logical step. The yel-
low alarm button on the lever box has the same function as the button that has a blue
frame on the display.

1.4 Rotate
In several menus is a button for the Turn function (F22). When this button is pressed, the
scanner positions itself so that the scanner head changes its position but the pointer beam
is still pointing to the same spot.
This can be useful if you are in a position where it is not possible to reach with the pointer
beam from a certain direction. The scanner then repositions itself to attempt to reach it
from the opposite direction.

1.5 Starting the system

Connection box
Start the profiler system by turning the switch on the junction box to position 1. On starting,
the scanner head goes automatically from parking position so that it points straight up in-
stead.
In order to activate all the profiler's functions, the rig's control system (RCS) must also be
turned on. So turn this on if it is not yet in operation.

u Danger of injury to the eyes.
u Do not look into the beam.
u Do not put optical instruments in the way of the beam.

2.2 Introduction
In order to be able to use the scanner function, the profiler system must have access to
geometric data (tunnel line). Geometric data is read via the rig's control system (RCS).
The rig must also be navigated. It can be navigated via the rig's control system or with the
help of the profiler system.
Check in the start menu status box if the following rows have been ticked.
• Geometry data (= tunnel line read)
• Navigated (= rig is navigated)
If these rows have been ticked, you can start scanning.

2.3 Settings

Menu S01.1.1
In this menu, you can make various settings that affect the scan.
• Stick. Here you can change the behaviour of the control lever. With Direct mode se-
lected, you can operate the scanner on both axes independently of each other.
• Full profile. These settings apply only if scanning with the Full Profile method has
been selected.
– The value at Depth (m) specifies how much of the tunnel is to be scanned.
– The In left side (m) value determines how far down to the floor scanning is to
be performed on the left wall of the tunnel. If, for example, you wish to start
scanning one metre up on the tunnel wall, enter the value -1.000. Note that it
must be a negative value.
– In right side (m) has the same function as above but for the right-hand wall of
the tunnel.
• Logging. These settings determine the accuracy of the scan/log.
## INFOGA.NONSGML ## imageID='b019916' width='5.473in' height='2.894in'
## IMAGE TITLE ## Logging, pitch size
## DELETED IMAGE.POSLIST ##
– Point distance tunnel (m) specifies the distance between log points along
the length of the tunnel.
– Point distance contour (m) specifies the distance between log points along
the contour of the tunnel.
– Max distance inside (m) is a boundary for the log. The points that are further
inside the contour than this boundary are not included in the log. In this way,
there will not be any uninteresting measuring points from e.g. booms and
other equipment on the rig.

12 No: 8662782859.1 en
Epiroc Tunnel Profiler 2 Scanning

• Square. These settings apply only if the Square method of scanning is selected.
– Min depth (m) and Min width (m) specify the length of the rectangles sides,
i.e. the size of the area to be scanned.
• Scanning. Here you can select whether the scan is to run along the length of the tun-
nel or at right angles, i.e. along the contour of the tunnel. Select between the following
three alternatives:
– Along tunnel
– Along contour
– Along tunnel opposite

2.3.1 Scanning rate

The laser always moves at the same rate on the rock when scanning. Depending on the
scanning method used, either the spot distance along the tunnel or the spot distance along
the contour will affect how long scanning takes.
Scanning methods Along tunnel and Along tunnel opposite affect the time it takes to
scan the distance specified for Point distance contour (m). The shorter the distance, the
longer it will take to scan as the scanner must measure more “rows”.
Scanning method Along contour affects the time it takes to scan the distance specified for
Point distance tunnel (m). The shorter the distance, the longer it will take to scan as the
scanner must measure more “layers”.

! NOTE: Scanning along the tunnel contour is often slower than scanning the length of
the tunnel.

There are four different methods of scanning:
• From - To

14 No: 8662782859.1 en
Epiroc Tunnel Profiler 2 Scanning

With the From - To method, the entire profile of the tunnel is scanned from an optional start
peg to an optional final peg.
• Square
The Square method of scanning means scanning within a limited rectangular area around
the point at which the scanner is pointing. The default size of rectangle is 1 x 1 metre but
these values can be change to an optional size.
• Full Profile
Full profile means scanning the entire tunnel profile, normally five metres along the length
of the tunnel.
• Manual scanning
Manual scanning means specifying individual points using the lever on the control lever
box. This method can be used, for example, to register rock bolts or nodules.

2.5 From - To
The From - To method works principally in the same way as the Full Profile method, i.e. the
entire tunnel profile is scanned. If it has been specified the scan is not to be done all the
way down to the floor (in menu S01.1.1), this will also apply to the From - To method.
The difference between the two methods is when scanning depth. With the Full Profile
method, a starting point is specified and the Profiler scans a certain distance back from this
point. With the From - To method, two sections between which the Profiler is to scan are
specified.

1. Check the settings for Full Profile in the setting menu S01.1.1 and adjust them if ne-
cessary. Refer also to the section on Settings.

2. Start by setting between which tunnel sections scanning is to be done. Press From -
To (F17) in the A02 menu. This will instead show the A02.1 menu.

3. Press From peg (F4). A window will appear with the opportunity to enter a numeric
value for the start peg. Then press OK.

4. Then confirm the selected start peg by pressing Apply (F12).

5. Then press To peg (F5). Enter a numeric value for the stop peg and press OK.

6. Then confirm the selected stop peg by pressing Apply (F12).

7. Press Next (F1) to return to the A02 menu.

2.6 Square
1. Check the S01.1.1 settings menu to see which measurement are set for the side of
the rectangle and adjust them as necessary. Refer also to the section on Settings.

2. Run the scanner head with the control lever so that the pointing beam comes into the
middle of the area to be scanned.

3. Select scanning method Rektangle (F4) in the A02 menu.

4. If a size of square other than the one specified in the S01.1.1 menu is required, it can
be changed. Move the laser diagonally from the point specified as the centre of the
square to a point you want to constitute a corner of the square. Then press Rek-
tangle again.

5. Start scanning by pressing Start autoscan (F7) in the A02 menu.

3.2 Introduction
In order to use the scanning function, the rig must be navigated. Navigation can be done
using the method offered by the RCS system (Laser Line) or with the help of the profiler
equipment.
To navigate with the profiler equipment, the Profile scanner alternative must be selected
in the rig's control system navigation menu. The profiler must also have access to geomet-
ric data, i.e. tunnel line, and to navigation data, i.e. laser line and/or fix points. Refer to sec-
tion on File transfer RCS - Profiler.
Navigation with the profile equipment can be done using three different methods:
• Laser
• Two fix points
• Fix point and laser hit

3.4 General recommendations

Navigation

1 Tunnel line

2 Tunnel laser

3 Scanner laser beam

4 Blind zone for scanner

A Fix point

B Scanner

• The maximum distance (L1) between the scanner and a navigation point is technically
about 100 metres but is often limited because of practical conditions.
• For navigation to be as accurate as possible, the navigation points (fix point or laser
hit) should not be placed too close to each other. Recommended distance between
points is about 30 metres.
• The distance between navigation points (L3) should always be greater than the dis-
tance between the scanner and the closest point (L2).
• If the points are on different sides of the tunnel, it is essential the distance between
them along the length of the tunnel is greater than the tunnels width.

3.5 File transfer RCS - Profiler

Irrespective of the selected navigation method, certain data files must be available to the
Profiler. A tunnel line file must always exist. A laser line file and a fix point file must also ex-
ist whenever relevant, i.e. a laser line file must be available when navigating with the laser,
etc.
In order to gain a more detailed description of how files are read into the RCS system and
transferred to the Profiler refer to the rig Operator's Manual.

23 No: 8662782859.1 en
Epiroc Tunnel Profiler 3 Navigation

1. First, select the Profile scanner navigation alternative in the RCS system.

2. Read a tunnel line into the RCS system with the Read tunnel line function. You can
choose to read the file from a PC card (DISP) or CCI unit (CCI).

3. Then read a laser file in the same way with the Read laser line function and/or a fix
point file with the Read fix points function.

4. At this point, the files have only been read into the RCS system. By selecting Navig-
ate rig in the RCS system navigation menu, the Profiler will also gain access to them.

3.6 Navigation with laser

Menu B04
Navigation with laser means that a tunnel laser is used with point of contact on the face
and a sight plate located so that the laser goes through the hole in the middle of the plate.
A section number for one of these points must be specified.

1. Select navigation method Profiler - Laser with (F4) in the B02 menu. Confirm your
selection by pressing Apply (F12).

2. Enter the section number of either the floor or the sight plate with Peg (F5). Then con-
firm with Apply (F12).

hits the laser's point of contact on the sight plate, press the yellow button on the con-
trol lever box so that the distance is registered by the Profiler.
Press Accept bwd ref. (F7) to finish.

6. Once the Profiler has registered the distance to both points, the scanner will go to cal-
culation mode level with the rig, whereby the scanner and the rig positions in relation
to the tunnel line can be calculated.
A new box opens to show that the calculation is in progress. Allow it to finish and do
not press OK or Cancel.

Menu D04
Navigation with two fix points means there must be two points in the tunnel that are defined
in the tunnel's coordinate system. These points are to be marked with the two navigation
plates that accompany the Epiroc Tunnel Profiler.
Normally, the read fix point file contains a list of several defined fix points and then the
points that are wanted for navigation can be selected.

1. Select navigation method Profiler - Two fix points with (F4) in the B02 menu. Con-
firm with Apply (F12).

2. Enter the section number for the floor. Confirm with Apply (F12).

3.9 Checking navigation

Menu A03.1
Navigation can be checked for extra accuracy. This will require access to a control point,
i.e. a point that is defined in the tunnel's coordinate system but has not been used for the
navigation itself.

1. Select a control point with Control position (F4) in the A03.1 menu.

2. Run the scanner manually with the control lever so that the pointer beam lights the
control point. Push the button on the top of the lever to register the control point.
Press Go to control pos. (F5) instead if the control point has been used earlier for
controlling navigation. The scanner will then run to the point in question. The pointer
beam can then be finely adjusted with the control lever and the lever button pressed.
Press Accept (F6) to finish.

3. Read the deviation with Control position deviation.
