Description of instrument

1 Description of instrument

1.1 Description
Designation: SPECTROTEST
Model: TXC03 / TXC35
Type: 76004718 / 76004720

1.2 Function
The sample probe evaporates sample material by means of arc discharge or spark
discharge. In this process, the released atoms and ions are stimulated to emit
radiation. A fiber-optics directs this radiation to the optical system. Here the
radiation is evaluated.
Data are already stored in the unit's memory. The measured values are compared
with these data. The results are then displayed on the screen.

 The instrument is operated with argon. Argon is heavier than air. It can
accumulate in a closed room, especially on the floor or lower-lying areas.
 Ensure to provide adequate ventilation. If necessary, install oxygen
sensors.
 The CO2 filter unit (optional) contains chemicals.
 The applicable safety data sheet is available at
http://www.spectro.com/msds.
 Protective gloves and goggles must be worn when replacing the filter
unit.
 When disposing of the filter unit, compliance with legal regulations is
mandatory.

— 10 SPECTROTEST — 05.12.2017
Safety

Warning! Danger of poisoning!

 Metal vapors may be generated from the sample material. Depending on the
sample material, these vapors may be toxic, e.g. in case of heavy metals.
 Ensure that protective equipment is worn in such cases, e.g. a
breathing apparatus and extraction equipment is installed. The
protective methods must ensure that the applicable threshold limit
values (TLV) and/or comparable national standards are not exceeded.

Warning! Risk of electrical shock!

When the instrument is switched on, there is a risk of an electric shock when the
electrode is touched or when the sample is removed during a measurement.
For a healthy person, this electric shock is of no concern. These are low currents
and voltages which are below the limit values of EN61010. However, a shock
may cause a subsequent accident, e.g. a fall from a ladder.
 Never touch the sample while a measurement is in progress.
 Avoid any contact with the electrode if the excitation is activated (plasma
generator).
 Always shut down the excitation (plasma generator) when working on the
spark stand (stationary spectrometers) or on the test probe (mobile
spectrometers).
 On mobile spectrometers, as an alternative, the probe can also be
disconnected from the instrument.
 For voltage ranges, see page 12.

Warning! Risk of burns!

 Contacting the electrode increases the risk of burn injuries. During normal
operation, the electrode will heat up to several hundred degrees.
 Never touch the electrode with your bare hands, even after shutting
down the spectrometer. Always use pliers.
 If an adapter is used for several measurements in a row, it can get hot.
 Touch the adapter only after it has sufficiently cooled.
 A sample can get hot if it is measured several times.
 Touch the sample only after it has sufficiently cooled.

SPECTROTEST — 05.12.2017 — 11
Safety

Warning! UV radiation!
The arc on the spark stand generates UV radiation. UV radiation may cause
damage to the eyes or skin.
 Use the appropriate sample adapter for samples that are not completely
covered by the spark stand opening.
 Take appropriate protective measures (e.g. wear safety goggles) when the
spark stand or the adapter openings are not fully covered.

Information
A high-voltage pulse ignites the plasma.
After the ignition, an alternating voltage (spark mode) or a direct voltage (arc
mode) is applied to the electrode.
The following table shows the respective voltage ranges:

High-voltage High-voltage Burning voltage Burning voltage

ignition pulse, ignition pulse, arc mode spark mode
arc mode spark mode

Spectro test 6 - 12 KV, 1 - 12 KV, 30 - 60 V, 20 - 200 V,

TXC03 / typically 8 KV typically 5 KV typically 40 V typically 30 V
TXC35

 When the instrument is switched on, there is an inherent risk of an electrical

emission during a spark test, especially if the sample is removed during the
measuring process.
 For a healthy person, this electrical transmission is of no concern. These
are electromagnetic fields of low intensity. Due to this transmission, the
electromagnetic characteristics of the device may be outside the limits of
EN61326-1 in some areas. As a result, disturbances of radio
transmissions can occur in the immediate (near) range of the
spectrometer. This means, for example, interference during the reception
of radio transmissions is possible (crackling, image disturbances).
 Users of life-sustaining or supporting medical devices (e.g., insulin
pumps, pacemakers, defibrillators, EEG, ECG devices, etc.) should not
be affected by CE-compliant devices. For this group of operators,
however, it is strongly recommended to contact the manufacturer of the
instrument before using the spectrometer!
