Keiji Ashizawa (born in 1973) lives and works in Tokyo, Japan.

After graduating from Yokohama


National University in 1995, he spent the first ten years of his career working as both an architect and
steel fabricator. The unique skills and experience gained throughout these early years, including a
valued understanding of metals, continue to influence his approach to design.

Keiji Ashizawa adalah seorang arsitek ternama berkebangsaan Jepang yang lahir pada tahun 1973.
Setelah lulus dari Universitas Nasional Yokohama pada tahun 1995, dia menghabiskan 10 tahun
karirnya dengan bekerja sebagai arsitek dan pembuat baja.

Keiji Ashizawa presents works of ‘honest’ design – simple yet refined, thoughtful and of a light kind –
derived naturally through the process of attempting to maximise the potential of each material and its
function. He excels in applying these ideas to projects of various scales, from furniture and lighting
design to architecture and exhibition design.

namun halus, bijaksana dan ringan. Hal ini bisa diperoleh secara alami ketika seorang arsitek
memaksimalkan potensi setiap bahan dan fungsinya. Dia unggul dalam menerapkan ide-ide ini ke
dalam proyek dari berbagai skala, mulai dari desain furniture, pencahayaan hingga arsitektur dan
desain pameran

With a great emphasis on his philosophy, Honest Design, he approaches each


project with honesty towards its terms and limitations in an effort to reach
multifaceted solutions. His general viewpoint towards design has resulted in
celebrating the different elements of a project and has allowed each material to
express its strength and beauty.
For the products, considering not only functions and limitations but also relations and effects with the
spaces and architectures, he is good at product designing with fine-tuning of materials.

His furniture and lighting have been exhibited internationally since 2001.

In 2011, Ashizawa was awarded a ‘Special Award’ by the Japan Institute of Design for his principal
participation in the inception of Ishinomaki Laboratory – a DIY furniture workshop established in
Ishinomaki, Japan, after it was devastated by the tsunami triggered by the Great East Japan
Earthquake. In 2015, the Ishinomaki stool from Ishinomaki laboratory entered the permanent
collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.

Pada 2011, Ashizawa memenangkan ‘Special Award’ dari Institut Desain Jepang untuk partisipasi
utamanya dalam pendirian Laboratorium Ishinomaki – bengkel furnitur DIY yang didirikan di
Ishinomaki, Jepang, setelah dihancurkan oleh tsunami yang dipicu oleh Gempa Besar Jepang Timur.
