Sambandar felt that such fevers are not uncommon in that season in that region. But he also felt that
such illnesses should not afflict the true devotees. What one experiences in this life is the result of past
karma. Hence, Sambandar sang this padhigam in which he affirms in every song that bad karma and its
ill effects will not afflict the devotees.
By the time he completed singing this padhigam, all devotees in his entourage had been cured of their
fever. (Further, as per Periya Puranam, the entire town/area became free of that fever that that moment).
Note: Even though we know the place (sthalam) where this padhigam was sung, this padhigam is not
considered as a padhigam for that place because the name of that sthalam is not stated in the songs of
this padhigam. Thus, this is considered as a 'common' (general - not place-specific) padhigam.

O devotees! You know the saying that what one experiences now is the result that person's past karma.
Will it not be your fault if you remain without seeking a way to escape this? We are all His servants
(devotees). Let us do holy service and worship our Lord's holy feet. Our past karma will not come and
touch us. (i.e. our past karma will be destroyed and hence we will be free of suffering). I declare so in
the name of the dark-throat of our Lord!

O devotees! We do holy service by maintaining gardens (for flowers used in worshiping Siva) and
digging many tanks (for use by temples and devotees). We pluck flowers and, with a tender heart
soaked in devotion, say Siva's glory such as, "You burnt three forts by shooting an arrow", and worship
Him twice daily. We are His devotees. Our bad karma will not come and touch us. (i.e. our past karma
will be destroyed and hence we will be free of suffering). I declare so in the name of the dark-throat of
our Lord!

We are devotees. Let us worship Siva praising Him variously such as - "O Lord! On account of Your
greatness, You crushed Ravana (who was so strong that no one dared to fight him) and then bestowed
Your grace on him. We have renounced this worldly life, and cut off our future births! Our hearts melt
in love for Your holy feet. We worship You with flowers. We are Your devout slaves". Our unholy bad
karma will not touch us. I declare so in the name of the dark-throat of our Lord!.
Notes:
• In this verse, the phrases - "We are devotees. Let us worship Siva praising Him variously such
as" has been inferred from an earlier song (#2).
• Ravana was so powerful that no one dared to fight him. Thus, Sambandar describes him as "the
unopposed demon". ("arakkaṉ" is the Tamil form the Sanskrit word "rākṣasa" = demon);
• "We have cut off our future births" - Karma is the root cause for births. When all karma has
been destroyed, then there is no more future births. Worshiping Siva with intense devotion and
renouncing worldly life (by getting away from the worldly attachments) ensures destruction of
karma.
• Sambandar, in the 8th song of his padhigams, usually mentions the episode of Ravana lifting
Kailasa mountain and getting crushed. The symbolism is that even a great sinner can be
redeemed if he repents and prays. (For more details about this, see the discussion of the 8th
song of padhigam 1.1 - thodudaiya seviyan).

Some have become Buddhists. Some have becomes Jains and discarded their dress (i.e. go around

Notes:
• In this verse, the phrases - "We are devotees. Let us worship Siva praising Him variously such
as" has been inferred from an earlier song (#2).
• In almost all padhigams of Sambandar, he repudiates (rejects / condemns) Buddhism and
Jainism in the 10th song. (For more background on this, see discussion of the 10th song in
Sambandar's first padhigam 1.1 - "thodudaiya seviyan").
• kondrai : Thevaram verses contain frequent references to Siva's wearing kondrai flower. It is -
Indian laburnum - Cassia fistula. It is a tree that produces yellow flowers. More info on this
flower can be seen here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cassia_fistula

Thirugnana Sambandar, who knows the greatness of the holy feet of Siva, the Lord of Devas, has sung
this set of ten songs of good Tamil. If any devotees who worship our dear Lord Siva with the intent of
reaching His feet in this birth itself but are forced to take another birth due to accumulated karma, those
who recite these songs will reach the celestial world full of enjoyment.
