Experiment No: 1
Experiment Name: Speed control of an Armature Controlled DC motor in the MATLAB
Simulink platform.

Objectives:
i. Learn about an armature-controlled DC motor and its internal connection.
ii. To draw the block diagram of an armature-controlled DC motor in Simulink platform for speed
control.
iii. To make a comparison between the motor speed and torque using graph.

Circuit Diagram:

Fig 1.1: The circuit diagram of a DC motor

From this figure, the circuit equations can be written as follows:

(1) 𝐼 (𝑠) = [𝐸 (𝑠) − 𝑉 (𝑠)]

(2) 𝑇 (𝑠) = 𝑘 𝐼 (𝑠)
( )
(3) 𝜔(𝑠) =
( )
(4) 𝐸 (𝑠) = 𝑘 𝜔(𝑠)
(5) 𝜃 (𝑠) = 𝜔(𝑠)
Using equations (1) and (2), the block diagram can be obtained as follows:

Simulink platform.

Output:

Fig 1.3: DC motor speed and DC motor torque comparison graph.

Discussion:
In fig 1.2 the block diagram created in Simulink is shown, and in fig 1.3 the comparison between the
motor speed and motor torque is shown. The speed of the motor is rising continuously after a short
period of time. In comparison, the motor torque reached its peak very early, but then suddenly dropped
to negative value. After some time, the value of torque settled close to zero.
Conclusion:
This experiment was about Speed control of an Armature Controlled DC motor in the MATLAB
Simulink platform. The circuit in fig 1.1 was used to derive some equations related to DC motor speed
control. Then block diagram in fig 1.2 was drawn in Simulink platform. The circuit was run, which
gave the motor speed and torque as output. The system parameter values were chosen randomly, so
the output could contain errors compared to the ideal DC motor system.
