2 Role play
Complete the sentences below.
Work in pairs. Choose a sentence and read it. Your partner should listen and do the action. Change
roles and repeat for the other sentences.
Can you think of any more nouns for each of these phrasal verbs?
The phrasal verbs in Exercise 3 take an object. Other phrasal verbs like ‘sit down’ and ‘stand up’ don’t
take an object (e.g. "John, please stand up!"). For phrasal verbs that take an object, there are normally
two possible positions where the object can go. If the object is a pronoun, there is normally only one
possible position. Study the table below.
Phrasal verb Object noun Object pronoun (me, you, him, it,
etc.)
Complete the sentences below with a suitable phrasal verb from this lesson. For some sentences,
more than one answer is possible.
1. I can hear water in the kitchen. Can you go and turn off the tap/turn the tap off (the
tap)?
2. The television is very loud. Can you (the volume) ?
3. I can’t remember my password. I didn’t (it).

8. You can’t wear a hat in here. Please (it) !
Write 7 original sentences with one or more phrasal verbs in each sentence.
Key
1. Watch and write
Play the video and have the students match each phrasal verb to the correct clip individually. If the students
are completely unfamiliar with the vocabulary, read aloud each phrasal verb or set of phrasal verbs while the
corresponding clip is playing. As a follow up, you can make up sentences with the phrasal verbs, read them aloud
and have individual students perform the actions, e.g. ‘Enrique, stand up and then sit down.’ Explain that ‘switch
on’ and ‘turn on’ have very similar meanings. Generally, ‘switch on’ indicates that the object includes a switch
connected to an electronic circuit whereas ‘turn on’ can include objects with knobs (taps, old television sets, etc.)
However, both terms are often used interchangeably with ‘turn on’ being more common in the United States.
