CASE STUDY 3.1 Romantic Hotel Muottas Muragl: plus-energy concept

On 18 December 2010, the first plus-energy hotel in the Alps was

opened on Muottas Murgul, Switzerland's sun-blessed mountain
terrace. The hotel uses an energy concept for the entire year and gains
more energy than it needs. Solar energy is used, reduces CO2 emission
144 tonnes per annum. Two-third less energy is required to increase 50
per cent of heated floor space. The energy supply is based on the use of
five energy levels, storing energy, using energy and plus-energy
building.Renovation period took 10 months and construction costs CHF
20 million.

Storing Energy

Solar energy is channelled for heating. Excess solar energy is stored in

the thermal-loop field. Waste heat is for heating, preheating and
thermal-loop regeneration.Photovaltaic panels generate electricity for
system and power grid stores excess energy.

Using Energy

Heat pump raises collected geothermal heat to be used. Waste heat

and low heat from solar panels increases heat pump flow temperature.
Electricity from power grid is used.

Plus-energy Building
Plus-energy concept generates more renewable energy for heating
spaces and water and air replenishment than people need, can be used
even in a high-alpine location. The Romantik Hotel Mouttas Muragl has
won Swiss Solar Award 2011 in the building renovation category,
PlusEnergieBau(r) PEB Solar Award 2011 and were named winners in
the Environmental Award Category 2011.
